I agree to what you are saying, madammargey. Puppies are like little kids, especially rescue puppies, as they already had more than their fair share of traumatic experiences in their young lives. It always amazes me (like in Skippy's case) to see how well an abandoned and injured puppy is responding to care and love it receives - 'tis something the least of them have never experienced in their puppyhood............ Surely, there can't be anything more rewarding than this? So what's a damaged "lurcher lawn" compared to a puppy's sparkling eyes who has learned to trust in humans and is allowed to be a happy puppy again after so much pain they have experienced......... It is these things that are going through my mind whenever a new rescue hound is coming in........... To see them forgetting their past............ To see them healing, recovering and gradually thriving under the care of their foster mums and dads, for it is these who are their stepping stones... And when Skippy is ready and SLR have found his forever home it will be the invisible bond that will tie Skippy to his new family and with it comes the great reward having been able to help another hound in need..... Thanks for asking Viviane. He had his second vax' this morning and the vet (not Alyson today) was very impressed with how much muscle he has retained on the broken leg and how well he is generally. It looks like being so disciplined about his 5 minute walks every hour is paying off He does have spells when he's completely lame but, apparently, that's normal for this kind of break. Of course, the payback for being so strict is that the poor lad's going stir crazy with the enforced rest and is getting very frustrated He feels so much better and wants to run and play so badly and he just doesn't understand why we won't let him He has managed to have a couple of really mad dashes round our living room (before I managed to get hold of him) and even managed the 'wall of death' on the two sofas yesterday I really hope we're managing to walk the very fine line between his mental and physical well being He has put on another 1/2 kilo but we would like to see another 1.5kg on him. I think the metacam might be upsetting his tummy a bit so I've got him on some pro-biotic just in case. I'm also going to give him a Glucosamine supplement now. He's due to see Aunty Alyson next Monday for a full review and to plan the next phase of his recovery.

This made me laugh: He's got a lovely furry, warm bed all to himself and yet he'd much rather have this warm, furry bed instead Trouble is Judy doesn't do sharing

Thank you for the very encouraging update and another lovely piccie of this gorgeous boy, Donna. It must be hard work for the two of you trying to find the exact balance between his needs and wants. Great to hear he is beginning to put on a bit of weight now, I'm sure he will put on some more as his health improves. Keep up the good work, all of you! Viviane. X PS: Hope you don't mind me saying that he does look good together with your Judy.

Well here we are four weeks since Skippy's opp. Time seems to just fly by doesn't it? He went down to the vets today for his 'four week'er and has passed with flying colours He will now be taken off the Metacam and have his exercise stepped up to 3 ten minute walks a day on top of the 5 minutes every hour. We're happy to report that because we have been vigilant about his exercise he has only lost about half the muscle tissue that would normally be expected to be lost with this kind of break and as a result we should be able to avoid having to take him for 'swimming lessons' ;D Way to go Skip! So from here he'll be another two weeks to allow the bone to strengthen and then it will be GA time to x-ray the leg to make sure that everything is okay and he will be neutered at the same time to save another GA later. Then it will be another ten days for the stitches and then it will be.......I'M FREEEEEEEEEEEE! We have been told that he should be able to run and hoon with other lurchers which he desperately wants to do at the moment, so all good news at the moment. I also understand that Auntie Alyson is very taken with him and would have him in a flash if she had more room so someone out there is going to end up with a lovely, if slightly nutty hound in the near future. ;D

I am so happy for little Skip, I remember how gentle and lost he was when we picked him up. You are doing such a great job with him, amazing how the love, care and understanding you have given him and others can turn their lives around.
All hounds should be "slightly nutty hounds" if you ask me, or is that just the owners?
Christina x

Hi All Sorry that there hasn't been many updates Not much to say really, other than "today I have mainly been in my crate" So.....things are greatly improving now that we have had the green light to give him more walkies. He seems to be limping less and less, except towards the end of the day, which we guess is more to do with 'muscle fatigue' than anything else. Hopefully there is an improvement happening in his muscle tone, but its a bit hard to tell on a day by day basis. We're starting to get his measure more now and he is being a bit of a 'monster puppy' ;D So far he has chewed three beds, four tea towels (very neat holes mind you!) one sole off one slipper and various other things that he can get hold of It mainly occurs in the morning, which is typical of the Lurcher type celebrating the new day,.....and mid morning....and lunch time.....and mid af.......well I guess you get the picture. He's also a bit 'bitey' at the moment and we think that he sees us as dogs not humans at the moment, which indicates that he's not had much human contact. We are of course addressing this as it could quite easily put some folks off and it sounds quite 'fierce' if your not ready for it! He is walking quite well on the lead and is showing very little in the way of 'prey drive', its more a 'cooo whats that?' He is very interested in picking up all manner of things and seeing if they are tasty or not though So next thing is to get an x-ray done of the break area to check all is well and remove a couple of items that he is probably not even aware of He's booked in for next Monday so fingers crossed that all is well. (looks like he needs a bath!) War wound Handsome Hound
