Please please do not ring or apply for Oscar yet. He has only just come into SLR and is still under observation and assessment. We are being inundated with calls this week, so please, if you are interested in applying for him can you download the form on the front page of the website and send it in. We are keeping a list of interested parties. Oscar has a vet trip today and has shown some stiffness in his back legs. We don't know if he has had restricted access to movement over a prolonged period, which could have resulted in this. Oscar has a few more injuries which will be looked at today. As with all SLR dogs, we do not re-home to anyone who works full-time unless it is an older dog, and Oscar is only 2/3 years old and needs some TLC. Around 24" to the shoulder. Found abandoned, in a matted state and needing some tlc and good food, he is just coming out of his shell. Oscar is being fostered in the Hampshire area.

Oscar got on well at the vets - the usual health check plus a bit of an investigation into a couple of issues but nothing too serious, thankfully. He had a little whine when he was microchipped and vaccinated but otherwise was very interested in what was going on - especially all the lovely doggie noises coming from outside! Only a couple of slight issues - one of his back legs has given way quite a few times so the vet checked his joints. Both back legs have full movement but one is very painful when manipulated and quite stiff. The vet thought he has strained it somehow - possibly by being tied up by it or getting caught up. This might also link with a nasty cut on his foot, which has been bleeding on and off since we got him. It is too old to stitch so we just need to keep washing it and putting the magic powder on. He has got to have lead exercise only until he goes back for his second vax in 2 weeks so the vet can check out the joint flexibility again (Rosie is not happy). He has not got much muscle on his legs (which you can't see because of all the hair!) and this supports the theory he has been tied up and not exercised. He should be fine with regular exercise and has certainly improved his fitness (and mine!) since we got him. The vet's advice was lots of exercise going up hills..... dragging me behind him! The only other thing is conjunctivitis in both eyes which some drops should sort. He has his 'op' booked for Friday so he will soon know his way to the vets well.
He is a lovely little chap and has obviously been through a bit, but has not been too badly treated, by the look of things. He was rather smelly and matted when we first got him, but a bit of a bath and some gentle grooming each day has improved his coat no end. He will have another bath this week before friday so he smells sweet for the vet!
Now we have had him a few days, his character is starting to come out. He has obviously been kept outside as he was very wary of coming in the house at first and has a very thick coat which means he gets hot inside. Grooming will help. We are guessing he has mainly been tied up due to his poor muscle tone and general lack of fitness. We actually thought he was quite an old dog when we first got him as he was very stiff and when he went to play with Rosie in the garden was out of breath very quickly. However, his teeth suggest he is probably around 18 months - 2 years. He has not shown any signs of fear or panic, except for loud traffic and has ignored Sid the cat for the most part - just the odd sniff. Not sure about children yet, but he is generally placid so we suspect he will be fine. He does jump up when food is around so may not suit very young children. He does get very excited when other dogs are around and he and Rosie have really hit it off, but has also been a loner and done his own thing on several occasions.
He has some very endearing (but naughty!) habits. He is very stealthy and will sneak past us undetected to gather items of our clothing, the odd shoe and items from the recycling bin - like cardboard boxes - to make a nest for himself. It is difficult to be angry when he is being so cute but he knows shoes and clothes are out of bounds (he still takes them though!)
The other thing that makes us think he has been tied up outside is that he has not real sense of toilet timing yet and Rosie has come to wake us up if he has had an ' accident'. To give him his due, he has made the toilet his chosen place of deposit, so at least it is easier to clear up than the carpet or rug. Top marks for initiative. However, clearing up a big, stinky poo at 4am for the last two nights has not been fun, so I am going to set my alarm for 3.30am and take him outside until he has done!
Will keep this thread updated when there is anything new to report. I have to admit, he is starting to get under our skin and Rosie will definitely be sad to see him go. However, he still has some settling in to do and a way to go before he is house-trained. I am looking forward to see how the scamp side of him is going to unfold!

No wonder you've been quiet for a while Sally Hope you Rolf & Rosie are all ok xx Oscar sounds a right character, bless him. Glad the trip to the vets wasn't full of bad news, everything seems pretty managable. I can see why you thought he was an older dog he's very distinguished isn't he - I love his face. Mark thinks he's got a GSD look about him... Look forward to seeing him come out of his shell and settle into living in a house. Maybe we can meet for a walk soon?

Oscar doing well today and was no bother when I put the drops in his eyes and took his worm tablet easily in a chunk of cheese. His appetite is very healthy and he has made Rosie eat her food properly as well. She knows if she is fussy she will lose it! He is happy to be left on his own, even without Rosie and is always pleased to see us when we return. he is a very happy chappy and has a lovely, thick, waggy tail!
Gilly - thanks for the offer of a groom - I might well take you up on that as he will look even more stunning with his coat properly quaffed! Karla, would be great to meet up with you, Mark and the boys while Oscar is still around!

Dear old Oscar had hi 'boys op' today and I have to say, I am surprised at how much it has taken out of him. He apparently had a very poorly tum episode just before he was given the anaesthetic, so was probably nervous, despite the appearance of being relaxed and cool. Poor boy is out of it tonight. He staggered outside for a mega wee then flaked out on the carpet. Rosie thinks she has done something wrong as she is not allowed to play, so I have 2 miserable dogs on my hands!
I tried to show them puppycam to cheer them up, but no good.
Hopefully, Oscar will feel better tomorrow, but it is a little exercise and special doggie food for his tum for the next few days. Bum.
Will post on any updates. Positive vibes required please.....
