We have heard from Oscar's new Mum - apparently he is doing well and are doing a great job with helping him to calm down (which he needs!). He is getting on well with TJ and learning some new commands! Well done Glen and Bob!

Oscar left us on 14th Feb and since then, Glen and Bob Ballard have been kindly emailing us to let us know how Oscar has been getting on - it sounds like he is making leaps and bounds! With their consent, I have cut and pasted their observations on Oscar's progress. Hope you enjoy reading how he is getting on! 16th Feb Since Oscar came home with us each day is different & seems to change by the hour! Our first priority with Oscar is to try to calm him down. He seems to get wound up & then over excited. It was interesting this morning when I insisted he went on his bed when he became manic (our Chesterfield – too uncomfortable for humans!!) & he promptly went to sleep for about an hour and a half! I am trying to instil a routine whereby he goes out for a romp & riot before a walk and this seems to work, except that if I let him romp again on return he reverts to ‘manic’ in the house. He saw a deer again this afternoon and showed considerable interest – at which point I reminded him of the ‘heel’ we tried in the morning. Sort of successful but a long way to go!!! I have introduced him to a Halti which he accepted with almost no fuss and he is really nice to walk with no pulling – at the moment! He and TJ really get along and they are rattling all over the garden. Poor TJ - she can hardly walk after the romping, but I think she will get fitter before too long. It’s quite comical to watch them playing. He stopped when I called this afternoon and came over to me, which was amazing. TJ is very agile and can turn on a sixpence. Her way of dealing with him is to do this & poor Oscar takes a while to turn round, losing a lot of ground in the process and becoming frustrated enough to bark! Rather like a speed boat and an ocean liner! He is making lots of friends. Every one who has met him thinks he is lovely! – Which he is. I think it will be a completely different world if I can make him calmer. I think he is basically a calm fellow, but it is the puppy that takes over and a big one too! 17th Feb Today has been much more relaxed (so far!). The romp and riots are shorter and I’m letting TJ dictate whether she feels she wants to – she didn’t get up at all this morning until about 11.00am & I think Oscar was feeling it a bit too. The walk was better for it. Oscar saw 5 deer this morning and was very good until the 5th when it became too much for him after it ran off!! He did a lunge after it, so thankfully the Halti is the right kit! He also experienced a pheasant fly up squawking under his nose & he took it all in his stride. He is going to be a fantastic dog and I think he is beginning to develop a tentative bond with me already. He is coming back into the house much better now and is eating very well – at the moment! 20th February Yes, we are finally settling down! We had quite a few people milling about this morning and Oscar revelled in it. On top of that we had our first walk outside our grounds along the foot path over the road and he loved it. Also, plenty of romping and rioting prior to that meant a really peaceful afternoon and evening!!! The house looks like a bomb site with all the toys from past years I thought I’d never see again and discarded bits of chew! My riding hat (which I haven’t seen for about 20 years) appeared in the sitting room from somewhere last night….AND – I caught him nosing the lid off the ‘goodie bin’ this evening….HMMMM…. Poor TJ, her little legs do their best to deal with him but she does get overpowered a bit. She was rescued with another lurcher (Archie) years ago and I think this is bringing back faint memories for her. It is wonderful to see them getting on so well from the very beginning. She is getting fitter by the day. Oscar is eating like a horse – I gave him three quarters of a tin of 1200g of Butchers Tripe today as he was really hungry- he could probably have eaten more but I’d prefer to do this gradually in case it upsets his tummy. He loves Boneos and has Shapes in the morning & loads of Gravy Bones as treats for training. He nicked, very surreptitiously, a bag of Waitrose Deli Sausages behind my back when I inadvertently left the lid off the Goodie Bin!! It was so sneaky! It is wonderful to see Oscar developing. I think Sally and Rolf must take a lot of the credit for starting him off. He has been clean for the last 3 nights and I’m sure it would have been a lot harder if you hadn’t worked on this first. Regarding the Separation Anxiety and barking, I think this will resolve in time. He doesn’t like me leaving the house, but today, after initial squeaking it relatively petered out. I think if I just continue as normal he will eventually accept that I go out and come in again as routine. This evening he joined me in the office for the first time and lay down beside me perfectly happy. A happy dog hopefully won’t worry if I come and go. It has been lovely to read the thread on the website. I have been really impressed by the comments from people who seem to genuinely care - they are so supportive. It will be great for them to hear how ‘HRH’ is doing! Oscar and TJ enjoying each other's company Smile for the camera! Phew! We can let it all hang out now Oscar dreaming of deer and pheasants Update care of Glen and Bob Ballard

An update on Oscar from Bob and Glenda.... Oscar is the most wonderful little dog and we all love him dearly. He has settled down to be the funniest, gentlest, friendliest, most generous fellow imaginable and just takes everything in his stride. He & TJ have a wonderful time romping & rioting (he put his foot in the water bowl during one riot in the sitting room spilling water everywhere. He was so upset he wouldn’t go out in the garden!). He no longer howls the place down when I go out – what a relief! I think the hot weather in the summer played a part here as he was so knackered after a walk he just couldn’t care less when I went out! He’s an excellent house dog too – sometimes too good at 4:00am if he thinks he hears a fox! He sets off TJ which sets off most of the other dogs in the neighbourhood…Lady & the Tramp springs to mind! He is much better when meeting other dogs on a walk now and doesn’t go crazy. In fact, it is a revelation to watch how other people are drawn to him as they pass by – even people who are nervous of dogs. He is very special. And some lovely photos. I think you'll all agree that he has grown into a stunning hound.
