Junior came under our wing as an emergency in the evening of 27th February, when Jenny was alerted by his owner’s concerned neighbour that the lad was alone in the house, & had been all day since the elderly owner was rushed to hospital following a drug overdose.
I won’t go into detail, but Jenny stated that conditions inside the house were appalling, & the smell of urine was overpowering. The only dog food in the place was one tin of Pedigree Chum – there was no dry food, no mixer, & not a sign of any dog biscuits or treats.
A very emotional Jenny brought Junior over to me, & I was utterly shocked when I saw the state of his teeth – I’ve been on this planet for more years than most, if not all of our members, but I had never previously come across anything remotely resembling the dreadful condition of his mouth, which resulted in him emitting an awful stench, compounded by the fact that he’d obviously been lying in his own urine.
His nails had not received any attention for goodness knows how long, & were curling under his paws.
Junior was patently very undernourished & was a mere bag of bones.
Jenny had earlier contacted the RSPCA & she has kept them appraised of the situation throughout.
We’ve posted photos of his teeth & nails under a separate thread in General Chat, so folks can choose whether to look at them or not since they make for particularly unpleasant viewing. This is the link to the pics: mimsmum.proboards104.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=993
The day after Junior came under our wing we took him to see our vet, who advised us that most of his teeth would have to come out, & that he had a heart murmur, which may or may not be connected to the infection from the teeth, as may a kidney condition. More will be known when blood tests are carried out at the end of Junior’s course of ABs.
The kindly neighbour obtained the owner’s signature on a document permitting SLR to be responsible for the lad’s veterinary treatment, & he was booked in to have the op on Friday 29th February, during the course of which Anil took several photos of his mouth, as did the RSPCA Inspector who had arrived at the surgery towards the end of the procedure.
Both professionals were as horrified as Jenny & myself at Junior’s condition, & we were all agreed that in conjunction with the concerned neighbour, (who has proved to be an absolute gem throughout), we would do our best to persuade his owner that it would not be appropriate for him to go back to her, since she was clearly incapable of looking after him properly, even though she was undoubtedly very attached to him.
Happily for Junior’s sake, & much to our relief his owner agreed to this & consented to relinquish him into SLR’s ownership, duly signing him over to us.
We do have more background information which will not be published in consideration of his previous owner’s absolute right to privacy, suffice it to say that she was sadly not entirely in control of the situation for various reasons.
Junior’s initial thread in the General Chat section contains details of his progress thus far - his condition continues to improve & we will carry on providing him with the best possible care to hopefully ensure that his twilight years are happier & more comfortable than those that have gone before.
