Jacki rang me just now and she is delighted with Junior, and she thinks Junior is delighted with her little cottage. She has a lovely poetic way of telling the story of Junior so far, and it reads so lovely. He has chosen the seat by the window, very wise she says as he can see what comes and goes. They have had a lovely walk since arriving home and he has met and greeted a dog on the way with waggy tail. I did warn her that Junior is now used to sleeping "in" the bed, a little detail that Barnacles had forgotten to mention. On the bed may have been his words... But... she is delighted at that too,. I think that Junior has landed well and truly on his feet with his new mum, and Jacki waited 6 months for us to find her her little man, so patience is a virtue. Jacki will keep us all informed as to Junior's progress, but today her internet is down (know the feeling). She said thank everyone on SLR for all their support and for making it possible for Junior to still be here and be with her. She sends a special thank you to the big softy (wonder who he could be) ;D Be happy little man. I wish you love, sunshine and happiness for many years to come.

Nothing wrong with "in" the bed, that's what Snoopy does for a cuddle in the mornings. Looking forward to updates on Junior's new life and some pics of course

Junior came under our wing as an emergency in the evening of 27th February, when Jenny was alerted by his owner’s concerned neighbour that the lad was alone in the house, & had been all day since the elderly owner was rushed to hospital following a drug overdose.
I won’t go into detail, but Jenny stated that conditions inside the house were appalling, & the smell of urine was overpowering. The only dog food in the place was one tin of Pedigree Chum – there was no dry food, no mixer, & not a sign of any dog biscuits or treats.
A very emotional Jenny brought Junior over to me, & I was utterly shocked when I saw the state of his teeth – I’ve been on this planet for more years than most, if not all of our members, but I had never previously come across anything remotely resembling the dreadful condition of his mouth, which resulted in him emitting an awful stench, compounded by the fact that he’d obviously been lying in his own urine.
His nails had not received any attention for goodness knows how long, & were curling under his paws.
Junior was patently very undernourished & was a mere bag of bones.
Jenny had earlier contacted the RSPCA & she has kept them appraised of the situation throughout.
We’ve posted photos of his teeth & nails under a separate thread in General Chat, so folks can choose whether to look at them or not since they make for particularly unpleasant viewing. This is the link to the pics: mimsmum.proboards104.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=993
The day after Junior came under our wing we took him to see our vet, who advised us that most of his teeth would have to come out, & that he had a heart murmur, which may or may not be connected to the infection from the teeth, as may a kidney condition. More will be known when blood tests are carried out at the end of Junior’s course of ABs.
The kindly neighbour obtained the owner’s signature on a document permitting SLR to be responsible for the lad’s veterinary treatment, & he was booked in to have the op on Friday 29th February, during the course of which Anil took several photos of his mouth, as did the RSPCA Inspector who had arrived at the surgery towards the end of the procedure.
Both professionals were as horrified as Jenny & myself at Junior’s condition, & we were all agreed that in conjunction with the concerned neighbour, (who has proved to be an absolute gem throughout), we would do our best to persuade his owner that it would not be appropriate for him to go back to her, since she was clearly incapable of looking after him properly, even though she was undoubtedly very attached to him.
Happily for Junior’s sake, & much to our relief his owner agreed to this & consented to relinquish him into SLR’s ownership, duly signing him over to us.
We do have more background information which will not be published in consideration of his previous owner’s absolute right to privacy, suffice it to say that she was sadly not entirely in control of the situation for various reasons.
Junior’s initial thread in the General Chat section contains details of his progress thus far - his condition continues to improve & we will carry on providing him with the best possible care to hopefully ensure that his twilight years are happier & more comfortable than those that have gone before.

Well, Junior and I have been together now for 24 hours and I am coming to the conclusion I’ve been sold a pup. The dog is an inveterate liar. Examples of what he has told me:
“I always sit in the front seat of the car, and am patted and petted by the driver for the entire duration of the journey, without pause.”
“Of COURSE I can get downstairs on my own, despite the fact they’re narrow, enclosed and very steep. I wouldn’t be following you up if I couldn’t, would I?”
“Yes I know it’s a double bed and of COURSE there’s room for both of us. My spot is CENTRE, TOP – all the rest of the bed is yours.”
“Barney NEVER made me get up at such an ungodly hour in the morning. We always slept in till at least mid-day.”
[On smelling a smoked salmon sandwich] “At Barney’s we always had smoked salmon for breakfast, without fail.”
“When we were sitting together on the sofa, Barney would never EVER move with getting my permission first.”
However, because I’m a decent sort of a woman and Junior, apart from moral turpitude, is such a GORGEOUS little dog we have decided to persevere. I will let you know if I make any headway with moral reform. Jacki P.S. Barney - Junior sends his love.

One week now and all’s well. We’ve learned a lot about each other but it all boils down to (a) I’m a soft touch and gullible in the extreme, and (b) he’s the boss. I hope to reverse this position in time but have not yet managed to persuade Junior. We went to the village pub yesterday with a couple of friends, to check on Junior’s pub-doggedness. He is highly pub-dogged: lies down quietly under the table, nods politely to other dogs, and accepts crisps from strangers VERY quickly before I have a chance to say no. However, on his return (perhaps befuddled by beer fumes and boring human chitchat) he let slip that the blue rosette he arrived with was NOT awarded for “handsome dog”, or “brave dog” or the like, but for being highly placed in the SAS Intensive Sub-Duvet Deep Burrowing Techniques Course! Junior appears amazed that I don’t know it’s bad form to serve the same menu for two meals running or to prevent him from dealing with insolent cats as he sees fit. These are just two of a long list of social gaffes I have committed since he moved in. He has, however, declared that despite my shortcomings this is a reasonable billet and he will be willing to settle here permanently if I just make a bit more of an effort. I’m trying.
