Someone has just pointed out to me that had he not met this little fur ball on day one, and had he not reacted he could have gone into another foster home, or adoptive home, all feeling that he was all other dog friendly, because today he was all other dog friendly, albeit muzzled, but wagging and greeting. And... had he gone into a new home with none of this known he could have killed someone's loved dog. Then how would we have been perceived.
Lurchers react differently on lead with muzzles on.
Anyway... this is all behind us and I want it to stay that way as I am not into slanging matches. Many people return their adoptive dogs, and that is something that SLR doesn't want.
I got a text message from the Dog Warden today, as he and I have been chasing our tails to find a place for Bilbo. And he has replied to say that a Greyhound Rescue has found him a foster space, not kennel. We have still offered to help with the costs of neutering etc.
All my love goes with Bilbo and a huge chunk of my heart. I am not someone who gives up easily, but when backed into a corner you have to say that's it. x

Sounds like a caring Dog Warden. If Bilbo Baggins has been found a place with a Greyhound Rescue foster then it could be the best for all concerned.

You've made the right decision Jenny. We had a very bad encounter years ago with a greyhound (very high prey drive and had won lots of races) who nearly killed my son's dog Moss. It happened so quickly and we were all in the garden at the time. Pete got bitten trying to split them up and we are sure that had we not been around at the time Moss would definitely had been killed. Just read about your walk where Bilbo grabbed a small dog. Yep this greyhound did the same to a small dog about a week before the Moss incident. As you say you can't keep a dog permanently muzzled as it wouldn't be fair. The said greyhound had a happy outcome. He was homed to a family with older children and was to be an only dog who would be muzzled and kept on a lead when out. Luckily they had a large garden for him to run around and I believe he is still with them.

Just goes to show that the right home is out there for almost every dog. I say almost because I'm sure that there are some who are sadly just too "damaged" to help. Good decision Jenny, and I'm glad that Bilbo has been found another place in a foster home. I'm sure we all wish him the very best. Big thanks to the lovely dog warden, and to the rescue who has taken Bilbo under their wing.

That's wonderful news he has a foster home with a Greyhound rescue. It is fortunate to have discovered this about him now so he goes to the right kind of home and no other dogs are harmed. I think it's a blessing in disguise and likely saved another dog being harmed or losing their life xx

Hi Jenny I just wanted to say well done for doing what you've done . I was the lady with the dog that had the incident at the park and as someone who has been mum to a rescued large deerhound lurcher with a prey drive , I stopped to talk to you with the dog I had with me. As we have done in the past . You were not to know what was going to happen as he showed no warning at all as he seemed quite relaxed .I also was shocked that he did what he did with no warning . You acted quickly and dealt with it well . Well done tho I am so pleased he is still looking for a experienced home and so glad he is safe i felt awful for you and you were great in dealing with what happened .You were right to do what you did as the incident was so unexpected ,he showed no keenness and you had good control of him. My little boarding dog was no worse off and as you saw I kept her down the park to meet other dogs . She has since shown no signs of being affected by the incident her owners have communicated with me that she is absolutely fine I'm pleased to say . Please don't feel bad for your decision and thankyou for all the hard work you do . Maybe when I'm over loosing my big hairy deerhound boy I will rescue my next one 😃 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Oh Mandy, huge thanks for getting in touch and letting me know how she is.
He is really is a big lovely lumux I've just spoken to Michael who is looking after him tonight and he will be picked up tomorrow for onward travel to his rescue foster. I was there with him today, muzzled, and he said hello to so many dogs. The problem was that I have two fosters, Sasha, who you have met, and Winnie, who is unneutered and who took great exception to him. Also, my Tag and Annie kept warning him off too. It was not fair to him.
Hopefully, see you at the park next week. xx

I'm pleased to hear the little girl you are looking after had no after effects from the incident. I wish all dog owners were as understanding as you. Hopefully you'll continue visiting the forum and checking out the threads and maybe one day there'll be a special dog here for you.

I agree, and so glad the little fluffy is ok. I am a huge fan of muzzles and if there is any slither of a doubt with a dog I will muzzle, ours are muzzled all the time when out. It is a huge responsibility being a foster parent and why it is the best way to assess a dog before rehoming, well done Jenny for a wise but hard decision. I hope Bilbo finds a savvy home with folks prepared to put in the work with him, he so deserves it.

As the others said, thank you so much for taking time to come on here Mandy. I am pleased the little dog is okay and it looks as though Bilbo will be too.

Bilbo had a fun evening with my three and slept like a log!
He woke this morning at about 7:00 and was ravenous - he's on 4 good meals a day, as Jenny advised and yet is always hungry, hopefully he will start putting on some weight.
Will be taking him for a walk shortly and then waiting for the call from the Warden. We are so happy that he has found a foster place for Bilbo as this little fella just craves human attention and I would guess that he was most unhappy in kennels.

Thank you Mike and Jillian for helping Bilbo on his onward journey. I hope we all get to hear how he progresses and hopefully ends up finding his perfect forever home.

Just caught up with this. As someone who is new to this world when we adopted Ellie, and is now thinking of doing more by fostering, this makes very interesting reading. I was going to offer for Bilbo but as we were both poorly, never got that far. If we had had him and he had done this in our company (our close friends have a small dog, we walk with them a lot) I know Dave would never go that route again! He took some persuading to get a rescue dog. Don't beat yourself up Jenny, you did the right thing, you have years of experience and know what you are doing, and it's good for Bilbo that the dog warden is so helpful and understanding too. Sounds like he will get the right home in the end.

Wow!! Just caught up with all of this. First of all I'd just like to say what an awful experience for Jenny, and Mandy too! However I am also shocked that Jenny has been sent emails criticsing her decision to return Bilbo. It seems like his attack on the little dog came out of the blue and with no warning, and was totally unlike his indoor character. A fair few people have returned dogs to SLR over the years that I have been a member, for various reasons, and all members seemed to be very supportive of those decisions, so it seems strange that Jenny should be targetted by emails. After all, she has 2 fosters already, plus her own dogs, and the rescue to run. Given all the circumstances, I think Jenny has made the right decision, and handled the situation admirably.

Thank you Marcia. To my count on the database, out of 700 odd dogs, we have had 33 bounce. Some of those due to the owners dying, or marriage splits. I am proud of that record. x
