We have three cats and Rocky. Our eldest cat has put Rocky in his place from the day he arrived, the younger two still hide upstairs and creep down occasionally after checking that Rocky is either asleep in his bed or they can't see him (if he is asleep on the sofa) but they are always listening for him and as soon as he moves they are ready to flee upstairs. He isn't aggressive just curious about them, though on day one he did chase one of them when they were in the garden. We did take the two timid ones and Rocky all to the vets one day and they were fine in their baskets with him sat next to them as they felt secure. When I visited Ziggy and Patch they were put in the garden for a while and one of their cats was sat out there at the same time and they didn't bother it at all so fingers crossed that once they have calmed and know their place they will be fine.

;D Great piccies Deb. Introductions to cats - have you got a crate. The cats need to be in the crate. A corner of the room away from the door is best. The dogs brought in on lead and treats offered to the dogs so that they are distracted as they enter the room. Keep them on the lead and talk to them distracting them and offer treats. Only let one of the dogs off-lead, the calmest one (if they are calmer) and keep distracting both the dogs. See how the cat reacts and let the calmer dog introduce itself if it wants to at the crate. The cat will be absolutely fine behind the wire. Call the dog off lead and give a treat. Get it back on lead and then see if you can do the same with the other dog. Once you have done this, get both dogs on lead and command to come and stay. Making sure that they don't have any extra lead, open the crate and let the cats decide if they want to come out. Still offering rewards to distract the dogs. If they don't, don't push it and remove the dogs from the room and let the cats out and allow them to go. Let the dogs back in the room to smell the crate and where the cats have been and see how interested they are. This process may have to be repeated several times. The second stage of this is to see if nose to nose contact can be established. Always with the dogs on lead for this introduction, and even a dog muzzle. We have been told that these two are totally cat friendly, so it is just a case of your cat/s telling them that they are okay but don't mess with us. Always reward good behaviour, and for ignoring the cats. When you do get to the point that the cat feels it is able to be in the same room as the dogs, make sure that the cat has escape routes but the dogs don't. A stairgate on the doorway is best.

Just a little update on Ziggy and Patch. They are settling down (thanks very much for the DAP Kara) and they are having some training so they don't pull on the lead when out on walks and they have learned not to jump up at the door. They are having a lot of exercise which seems to suit them at the moment as they are a little younger than we all thought. Their previous owner has since told us that they aren't three until August. They are enjoying getting into their new routine of walks and rest and are showing that they are capable of cheeky behaviour. Ziggy helped himself to an apple from the fruit bowl for breakfast today and John lost his curry over weekend when he wasn't paying attention. ;D Luckily he'd finished most of it. We thought they might not be best pleased to be in a vegan household but it doesn't look like they are too bothered by the food. Of course they are having Burns and some Nature Diet wet food too - we wouldn't do that to them. Otherwise they are now sleeping downstairs on their own and not waking up until 6am - we are aiming to get them to 7am

Lovely update. Mummychook is relieved that all your hard work is paying off. I know it hasn't been easy and a daily stepping stone of achievements.

Hello, I think it's fair to say that they have truly settled in. They are being good boys (mostly!!) They are thieves around fruit which has surprised me as our previous lurcher wouldn't touch it. Ziggy peeled a banana and ate it within two minutes. It was expertly done. But I lost my banana! They are now doing full stretches on both their front and back legs and they are running alot faster with more confidence and really extended legs. They literally zoom around in the arboretum and love other dogs and people - they just want to play all the time. Their recall is really good now. These aren't the most beautiful pictures but you can see that they are exploring their enviroment around the forest of dean. Can we go in? A little drink from the brook
