;D ;D ;D or Fat Boy Slim! Val it is SO lovely to see the photos of Slim at your place and to know that Chloe has allowed him house room I am absolutely sure that he will benefit from being shown the ropes by her. I hope you all get a good night's sleep and also hope that the trip to see Tinks goes well tomorrow. Look forward to hearing what you make of Slim, once you've spent some time with him and to reading progress updates.

What brilliant photos Gilly! (mind you I am a tad concerned about my Nora Batty jeans!!!) And how lovely to have Slim's handover so well documented. At last some pictures that show him in his full handsomeness With Gilly's beautiful "I need a home" coat on, it will take him less than nano-seconds to find his forever sofa methinks. What a much happier boy than when the photo was taken by kennels on his arrival on Christmas Day (see below) Isn't it amazing what something as simple as a warm bed and some cuddles can do for a fellow! And that was BEFORE the Range Rover, the rabbit, the spratts, the tripe and the yogurt ;D And as for looks - Colin Firth watch out, you may have a rival!

I have to keep looking to make sure Skip is still with us I just cannot get over how alike he and Slim are in looks. If he's like Skip in character there will be plenty of tales about how clever he is and how much mischief he's got up to

Slim was busy today. Before I tell you about it, let me tell you what I've discovered about Slim. He's virtually housetrained already, thanks to Audrey. I can take no credit because it was Slim who asked to go out for a wee 3 times yesterday despite that being his first evening with us. He put himself to bed in his crate yesterday evening at 10.15 and didn't stir until Bill got up about 6 am. He was perfectly clean and dry. Nothing to do with me - Audrey did that for him. He is the smartest cookie I've ever met. He knows how to sit, will come to call in the house and garden when he hears his name or when I blow a high-pitched training whistle, takes food politely, is eating in the kitchen with Chloe with no problems whatsoever and he gives the most fantastic lurcher hugs and leans imaginable. So far today he has scoffed two big meals, had a one hour walk on lead, a quick catnap in the car, another half hour run off lead (yes, I did say off lead), followed by lunch and a quick walk round the block for a pee break as I couldn't be asked to catch up the chickens for him to use the garden safely. Slim is in love with hubbie Bill. He's a real man's dog and seems to consider me a poor but acceptable substitute when Bill pops out! He plays nicely with toys and is good with Chloe. He's mounted her three times, but she only told him off once, so I'm assuming it's love there too. The most exciting part of the day was when we all drove over to Romsey to see Aunty Kate and Tinks. That was the part of the day when Slim was allowed off lead with Tinks and Chloe in an enclosed field near to Kate's. All three of them hit it off famously, with the result that Tinks, shortly to be renamed Tia, will be coming to live with Chloe and Slim from next Thursday 21 Jan. Now we're back at home and I finally had a bit of time to put the vacuum cleaner round the place. Slim was intrigued but unafraid of it. How cool is this dude? Here's Bill smoozing with Slim: And here's the boy in his favourite room in the house (yep, the kitchen): And finally, here's what happens when you're just a puppy who's had too many adventures for just one day: More adventures tomorrow when Chloe and Slim get to meet loads of new friends on the Greyhounds in Need walk in the New Forest. Thanks to Gilly for the beautiful amethyst crystals adorning Slim's collar.

Funny to think it's only been a week since I drove through the snow to get him - he seems to have packed an awful lot into a short time! Looks like he's been enjoying it all too....

I totally agree with you Jenny, it doesn't seem possible it's only a week since he was collected from kennels. Makes your treacherous drive along snow-packed/icy roads seem worthwhile eh?! I keep thinking, if you hadn't spotted him in kennels just where would he have been now? Doesn't bear thinking about does it? Reading your thread made me cry Val - with pleasure and relief, not with sadness. I am so glad that you see in Slim all the qualities that I saw, he is a lovely boy I just knew that the little fellow would appreciate some doggy company, and am so glad that he and Chloe and Tia all get along well He is so full of Life and positive energy that he needs to spread himself around a bit I think! Great news about Tia coming to live with you all I am also really pleased that Slim has attached himself to Bill, must be a testosterone thing methinks Still, with Chloe and Tia around the place you won't be short of cuddles I'm sure! Enjoy the walk tomorrow. Wish I lived closer as I would love to join you all. Maybe one Sunday I'll expedition myself down that way and join the pack. I'm assuming that current-doglessness won't exclude me? Maybe I could boorrow a dog from you for the duration?! Please give little Slimbo Jimbo some extra cuddles and ear ruffles from me - thanks

Hi Audrey - all cuddles and ear tickles passed on. On this evening's menu we had a large chunk of oxtail with two chicken wings. Slim didn't disappoint. He and Chloe spent 45 minutes of serious chomping in the kitchen together, as they knawed their bones down to the, er, bone.
Slim now has the whitest teeth, as befits any self-respecting young lurcher, and he has had a fun-filled day. He's delighted Tia will be joining the party on Thursday next as she is the perfect racing partner for him. Chloe, not to be outdone, has revealed her true lurcher features by joining in the play-fighting when she pleases, and telling the two youngsters off when they found themselves on the wrong side of the fence!
Slim has now munched his way through 1.5 kgs of fresh raw food today and he's loved it all. He did find room for a few tuna and Parmesan oatcake treats, and we've confirmed he does have a certain amount of recall, particularly in the direction of the kitchen. Way to go, Slim. His digestion is robust and his initial reserve on how to deal with chunks of raw meaty bones has disappeared.
When it was our turn to cook ourselves supper, he haunted the kitchen in the most polite manner imaginable. He is soooooooo cute and I am very pleased that applications are already being received for him. I think he will love any home where there are other dogs to keep him company. He does not jump up, and was not as excited by the sight of our three chickens eating corn right outside the conservatory as I thought he might be.
Given time, he could possibly turn out to be chicken-friendly, though prospective adopters should proceed with caution. On today's first walk in the park he greeted many other breeds of dogs with friendliness and calmness. Two aggressive on-lead dogs passed by him, each making a fuss and barking. He ignored them. What a star! Oh, and by the way, he's been clean in the house today.

It's been a wonderful day. Slim, though, has been a bit naughty. We went on a fab Greyhounds in Need 2 hour walk in the New Forest, along with many other lurchers, greyhounds and other breeds of dogs. We let our dogs off lead when we were far enough away from the road to do so, and off they charged, in true lurcher style. Slim was pretty much in front for a large part of the way. His recall, which is good in the house and the garden, disappeared. Oops. He was doing quite well, though too far in front of me and Chloe for my tastes, until he saw a couple of New Forest ponies. Being part Saluki, he decided to circle the [wagons] ponies. Luckily, they were made of sterner stuff, and did not run. He did, though - round and round and round. I got told off. [blushing]. I called. I whistled. My foster dog was deaf. We moved on quickly and Slim, rising to the occasion, left the ponies and came with us. The very next opportunity, I collared him and put him back on the lead, knowing he'd had at least a good 45 minute run. Ten minutes later, a beautiful deer stonked its way across the path ahead of us. Some naughty hounds set off in a rather inadequate pursuit (luckily) but SLIM WASN'T ONE OF THEM. He stayed with his foster mummy. Quite right. I felt my status on the walk had risen somewhat, so held my head high for the remainder of the time. Sal's taken lots of pictures which will be far more professional than any I could have taken, so I wanted to show you tonight the result of a near-three hour walk on one young, one middle-aged lurcher: Here's Chloe: Here's Slim, determined not to miss anything in the kitchen while he stays with his beloved Bill: Here's Slim [though he had to play with all his toys first]: And on tonight's raw fresh food menu, we had: Chloe scoffing some rabbit joints [no, it's a legal substance!]: Slim, having scoffed all his rabbit, sprats, and chicken wings, tucking into a lamb leisure bone [we will wash the mat, honest]: Slim has been clean in the house again today .

Lovely update Val and great photos! I can just visualise young Slim turning two deaf ears whilst circling the ponies I'm glad you regained some of your decorum later in the walk!!! I am incredibly happy that Slim is getting on so well, I'm sure that being with Chloe is just what he needed (with you and Bill too of course!) As for that menu - do you take bookings?

Sorry Audrey - the last remnants are being washed out of the rug as I type. Drat the resolution on these digital cameras when you'd like to pretend your back door rug is okay really!
You are, of course, welcome to come and watch the boy watch us prepare supper in the kitchen for you and for Bill and me ANYTIME YOU WANT. Just call. X
