Patxi continues to mellow. Well, move in the general direction of mellowness, while being young, energetic and Patxi. It's a new verb in our house. He's learning to be more cooperative, level handed in playing with our two. Not just full-on mugging. Some mouthing and nibbling that doesn't involve missing chunks and in this photo, playing the submissive role. He never used to be 'at the bottom' or on his back. It's still not normal and I think never shall be. Some dogs don't do submissive play,,, eh Ringo? However, it shows just how sure he is in familiar company, with both Ringo and Joey 'ganging' up on Patxi here in this photo and he's messin' about upside down. That takes confidence. And is that confidence feeding into his on-lead reactiveness? Could be. I feel his reactions are less dramatic and doesn't last long. That's not based on any methodical evaluation and measurement. The plan remains to avoid 'situations', not test/challenge him. But, you know, dogs appears around corners! When it's just 'his' pack, Patxi's fabulous. A packed-in pack in the car and only one grumble in 2 x 200+ mile trips.

We've been clicker training with targeting this last couple of weeks. I'm inexperienced, so it's taken longer than it might otherwise have, because Patxi's a good student. Can't rush it though. The idea is to 'shape' the dog's mindset into thinking about the options themselves. No clues or triggers. Soon to move onto mat work, but have to get 100% reliability (subject to hander-error) with targeting before that and we're not quite there. The mat work forms part of a process to help Patxi learn to relax, not over react, based on his own judgement. Give him a choice not to do as he currently does so well, bark. In other news, he's not as cute a Ringo and I'm completely unbiased.

Maybe, Patxi has landed on his permanent sofa. Seems very promising, but he remains a big, not quick-fix project. I'm so very happy with the realistic commitment and dedication shown by his new family. Even the cat hasn't left the building and Patxi doesn't bark at it all the time! He has a lurcher girly of 6 yrs to be non-tolerant. He needs that. Two very willing and able humans guides. A most fluffy cat that could be his best of biddies, when he realises. And a beautifully rural homestead. Last week, soon after riving in Dorset,,, Please give Bridget and family/pack/village a while longer to get to grips with the adorable Patxi, now known as Theo. Time is needed. Time they have. Theo is wonderful, but no yet Godly!

This came as a bit of a surprise, but a very welcome one. Fingers crossed that he's there to stay and he continues to relax and enjoy his new life... it sounds very promising, and i'm looking forward to hearing from Toni on how he is getting on.

Wishing Theo, Bridget, and the whole County of Dorset the very best of wishes that things continue to work out well. Theo just needs firm confident patient people and hounds/cats to guide him. He really is a lovely boy.

Excellent news! He seems so chillaxed in those photos already...a great start.
And it sounds like he's landed on his paws with Bridget and her household committed to giving this lad a strong chance of a happy new life.
Simon: Well done to you & Helen for getting him this far. I'm sure that being around your two more dominant dogs has helped him learn that the big boys don't have to be scary and can actually be great fun to play with if you're willing to adjust your place in the pecking order.
What great news to start the day with!!

What great news to start the day with!! It certainly is! With a dog like Paxti, sometimes it's best to keep trials/sleepovers on the QT as we do get a bit excited and this possibly raises expectations all round...not necessarily a good thing. Well done Simon, Helen and the boyz for bringing Paxti on his journey, and thanks to Bridget and her family for giving him a chance (and a name we can pronounce ).
