I found some holes in the growing radishes yesterday so Comet and I trotted off to our garden centre for some slug repellent. He was not too worried by the air conditioning fan at chest level but would have nothing to do with the garden ornaments in painted cement in the shape of various animals. . I now appreciate the frustration of parents of small children waiting at the check-out while trying to keep their offspring away from the various sweets plonked just by the queue at child/dog height! Considering the temptation Comet was rather good. He merely had a good sniff of the goodies which made the assistant laugh. How can they smell anything through the sealed packaging? Amazing noses!

I didn't see any residual lack of confidence in Jet.
He also makes very good eye contact, though that might have been something to do with me possessing a stash of chopped up sausages...
't'was fabulous to see him blasting around with Ringo and Joey.

I feel I should update but there is nothing much to tell really. That is the trouble with a 'normal' dog! Training is ongoing in a relaxed way. A bit of heel work, a bit of lying down on command, the beginnings of 'down stay' (still no sitting). Some walking around and through grazing animals to get him desensitised to stock. Getting him used to a muzzle to cover all eventualities, (like letting him loose on the Forest one day). Everything going well. So I have decided to pep things up a bit as I feel we need to give Comet something new to think about. Next wednesday we are going to a beginner's training class with trainers I know well to have a bit of fun. They may have ideas about the sitting but if it does not happen they will not worry as they understand hounds are a bit different which is brilliant. I started Dylan with them and he ended up doing much better than I would ever have predicted thanks to their methods. I will definitely write all about our sessions here. Comet has learnt what I have taught him so far very quickly and I am looking forward to his classes.

Comet and I had a little jaunt on our own this morning to go and say hello to all the SLR peeps and dogs before they started their Happy Cheese walk. Comet politely met all the dogs he could exchange greetings with. He is turning out to be such a sociable chap (and good-looking!), it is a pleasure to take him along and show him off. He had of course already been exercised with our two earlier this morning. Back at home, our builder turned up with his friendly staffy, so lots more doggy greetings all around!

He's a lovely little man and clearly enjoys interacting with other dogs. He's going to make someone a lovely companion and with the training you are going to do, he'll be the ideal pup.

Comet and I went to his first class followed by a visit to a friend and her dog this morning. The treat pouch was full of specially cooked sausage bits and Comet seemed to enjoy the whole experience. He was calm throughout what must have been a very strange business to him. He remembered his walking at heel training quite well in the hall but became very distracted when we moved into the car park. i am sure he thought we were going home. Even when distracted he did not lunge or bark and I was able to get his attention back on me without too much trouble. And… I got one 'sit'! I do not believe we have cracked yet as it was obtained from a 'down' after putting his back end so close to the wall he could use it to prop himself up securely in the sitting position but it is a hopeful start. We then went to visit a friend who has a Finnish Buhund (Spitz type dog) who is a lovely friendly boy. We had to keep a bit of a lid on their playing though as my friend's sitting-room might have suffered otherwise. It is not quite mad-hound proof with fragile period furniture and small ornaments on low tables. We are now supposed to practice what we have learnt before going back next week. More sitting, Comet?

Well done Comet. You're doing a great job with this little man, Annette. He's going to be the perfect companion for someone, hopefully very soon

The various faces of Comet: Proud and confident. Friendly and peaceful. Loving and cuddly (maximum size for a lap dog?) Creature of legend in the early morning, all raw energy and power.
