Just saw on Facebook that Ben has been adopted so came on here to get more info on his new home ......... am feeling a bit 'over-sensitive' atm so reading about his 'internal' probs when he arrived on UK soil upset me and I feel I should apologise again to Kate for the lack of communication but the past 7wks have just been emotionally & physically very draining for me due to my Mother's rapid slipping in health and excursions to the hospital, etc It would be foolish of me to think or say that my lack of energy and/or attention probably reduced the normal level of care that the animals got here but it is not something you are aware of at the time and so if anyone involved in the care/fostering/etc of Ben felt he had not gotten all he should then for that I apologise and hope my posting will in some way make up for that I have attached a photo of how Ben was when he arrived to me from another rescue in order to have 'work/treatment' done on an earlier broken pelvis he had suffered which when healed left him with a tense unfluidlike stance and from a side view you could clearly see that the area was very rounded and he carried his knees/legs too far under him ... this did not change when he ran with others in the fields, etc so I duly commenced 'working' on his spinal/rear leg areas and following a few weeks he was standing and running like a happy go lucky lurcher puppy should. I was just about to proclaim his readiness for leaving me when one night someone came to the door and I left the kitchen ... Ben being Ben took the opportunity to go rooting around my desk and duly found and quickly consumed a very large bar of Dairy Milk ... off to the vet again with him and I actually thought I would loose him as he became very dehydrated, lethargic and his nether regions were producing liquid-like chocolate .... thankfully he responded to the treatment and was soon back to his happy puppy ways. Unfortunately I must have been too forthcoming with talking about him now being ready for adoption and he decided he would cause himself to remain here even longer by 'interfering' with one of the yearlings here whilst she was eating her dinner and he did not see her warning signs which lead to him getting a nasty kick in the head ... xrays showed he had a thin fracture to his skull and by the following morning he had a hematoma extending across the whole left side of his head despite being on very strong anti-inflammatorys, etc Lucky for me Ben was an excellent patient (god knows he had enough practice at it at this stage) and after about 4 days the swelling had dramatically reduced .......... few weeks passed and yet again he received the 'all clear' from the vet for rehoming. Due to all that was coming to light with my Mother's health and with Ben's obvious love of drama I contacted Jenny to see if he could now travel over as I feared he would get himself in more trouble ...... Ben is sorely missed here by myself and my 2 children as his daily antics always gave us plenty of laughs. Whilst with us he lived as part of our 'rather-large' family so he wouldn't really have had a choice but to be both cat & dog friendly He accompanied me on several school drop-off/pick-up runs so he is/was well used to travelling. In the extended winter feeding weeks he was one of the many K9s that kept me company whilst out doing the equines and on the many cold wet nights he would be thrilled when the chores were over and we would all sit round the stove in the sitting room to dry off / warm up. I am soooooooo glad he has gotten such a lovely sounding home and as always so grateful to everyone at SLR for their kindness and assistance in homing another of our lovable lurchers Sheena (last apology - sorry about the long post but just felt that there sounded like there was a lot wrong with him when he arrived and that perhaps I should give a form of explanation) Attachments:

Hi Sheenah, I think that when Ben came over he developed Colitis on the change of food. It can be very worrying to a foster who hasn't experienced it before. Christina rang me whilst I was on holiday and we had a chat about it, and decided the best thing was to put him back onto a bland diet before introducing another diet. It seems to have done the trick. Pups pick up lots of things, and Ben being curious and a mischievous lad, probably picked up more than most. Don't beat yourself up over it Sheena. You have a lot on your plate. Had he come over before the cow kick incident he would have probably sailed through his travel/change. Hope you are okay. xxx

Hi Sheenah, I am so sorry if you felt in anyway upset by my questions about Bens health . I have only just seen this or I would have posted earlier. He is a fantastic young dog who is now enjoying a wonderful new life-you couldn't help but fall in love with him! Due to holidays etc it was a difficult time for communication and Ben was settling down after his journey. You have done such a lot for him and the other dogs you have helped and without your care and compassion many more would have suffered more pain and suffering or come to an untimely end. I think you are wonderful.
