Lovely, Christina, thank you for your update. Great to hear how well he is doing, considering he had done so much travelling whilst not knowing what was happening to him and where he was going........ This might explain his "dire back" but let's hope this will settle in the next couple of days. Might be worth giving him a bland diet consisting of just a bit of minced meat with rice (as it is commonly recommended by vets). Hope his tummy settles soon. Viviane. X

Oh poo (literally) - the irish contingent are having a rough ride aren't they ? We've had a similar problem with pretty much all the foster dogs when they first come in. You have no idea what they've been fed previously and, often, their poor ol' tummies just take a while to get used to the new food. Now, I give all incomers Chappie for the first few days. They love it, it's good for them and we never seem to get the dire rear reaction Might be worth a try

Donna, If the dogs are coming from a Rescue (as in Ben's case), can I suggest that, as part of the communications, to ask the Rescue WHAT THE DOGS HAVE BEEN FED ON whilst in their care. Knowing what the dogs have been fed on should eliminate upset tummies caused by a different diet. If you remember, we got Nicole from a Rescue in Ireland in May and learned that she had been fed on "James well beloved" and so continued with this for a while. We never had any problems. Viviane. X

We are using chappie anyway so hopefully it is more the upset of travelling etc. His little tummy was gurgling all evening . He is a little better tonight with not so much action or wind, so fingers crossed-but this morning I was begging to worry about the poor little chap . He is eating well and there is no blood or worms so lets hope he is better tomorrow also he had a lovely time this evening playing with Mia they were chasing each other round in circles so they should sleep well. Just off to check Penny's thread.

Of course you are right about asking the Rescue's what diet a dog has had Viviane. and I think most of us think to do that So far most of the foster dogs we have had have been strays and so we haven't had the luxury of a history and we've learned through experience that Chappie seems to suit most dogs regardless of the diet they were on previously. And sorry Christina. I hope I didn't sound like I was trying to teach Grandma to suck eggs

When we adopted Caspar from another rescue when he was 18 months old, it took a few months for his digestion to settle into a proper(firmer) routine. We almost despaired of him having "normal" pooh. As well as finding the food that suits them best I think the stress of settling into their new lives does affect some hounds much more than others.

Frozen, raw, natural meat blocks of fish, chicken, lamb, rabbit, tripe, beef etc from Pets at Home. about 65p a block. I give Poppy 1/4 a day with James Wellbeloved complete mixed in. She has a rather a delicate tum and this seems to suit her very well. Hope this helps

Finger crossed we might have cracked it ;D- thank goodness I did go to the vet's as he has....Worms! YUK It did cross my mind but but not seen anything, now the tablets doing its job his breathing has slowed right down and he only makes a noise when he wants to play not the poor whine he was doing before. He is still hungry but not every couple of hours and he is sleeping better too, although he still follows you if you go when he can't see you. He is a realy softie an all sense of the word. I am up to my eyes in decorating, putting up Blinds and with the dogs, Alex & friend needing picking up from the skate park now I will post more later on. He is so good I want to keep him, BUT I cant so get those applications in quick! Thank you for all the help & advice I will see how he goes for the next couple of days without changing food again then let you know.

Hi folks. Well done Christina for taking him on for fostering him at such short notice. Just want to remind everyone that Ben suffered a slight fracture of his skull from a cow kick 4 weeks ago, so light exercise for a while. He should have recovered by now but just be careful. Also, foodwise, doing right by using Chappie. Sorry if I have missed anything but I am skimming through the forum as am sitting in a pub using their internet connection. We have what looks to be a good home offer for Ben, and if we can get him a homecheck in Essex as soon as I may well be able to bring him home from Christinas's. I think I am near to you Christina will give you a ring and meet up for a walk. Well done everyone for the rescue run.

Thanks Jennie, I had no idea about the cow kick so that makes me feel even more sorry for the poor boy. He is so gentle and kind and charms everyone we meet out on walks. Lets hope the home offer is right for him as I think he will respond so well to a settled loving home very quickly. Whoever gets this boy will wonder how they ever managed life without him. I know I will!!!

Just walked into the bedroom and found this What is so amazing is that Jazz is very loving but dosent like any of the girls touching her when she is asleep and gets very touchy if they do, so I always get jelous of the photos posted of your dogs cuddling up together. He really is VERY SPECIAL if Jazz wants to do this!!!

I took Ben with me today to my daughters house while we did some gardening, he was brilliantly behaved ;D. They have two rescue cats and he just kept a respectful distance ie: lifted his head then went back to sleep . He just slept on his mat in the shade, inside the patio doors or came over to say hello for a cuddle then back to his mat . I can honestly say he is the most well behaved dog in new situations I have ever met. He does countersurf and bin raid if he can, but after his past it is hardly surprising. I dont know if he had been taught any commands before but he is a very quick to learner (collie trait i guess) and just wants to please you . In fact if I swap him for one of the others do you think anyone would notice??? Or is four a magic number now?? Only kidding, but every Lurcher that comes here is honestly such a pleasure to look after and I can't convey the absolute joy of fostering these wonderful dogs. So if your thinking of giving it a go DO, if it isn't for you then you will know for sure BUT if it is, you will NEVER regret it.
