I am such a HUGE fan of the lovely Slim. He has come a very long way since being under the careful and skilled watchful eye of Val. I also believe that it has the be the right family for Slim, and that he needs another hound around for company and support. I love the way that Slim leans in for a cuddle, it clearly shows how affectionate he is towards us two leggers as well as the four leggers I am very much looking forward to seeing you all on our next walk

Great to get an update on Slim Val and lovely, lovely photos of your 'pack'. You are doing such a wonderful job with young Slimbo. I so recognise the catherine wheel description of Slim on lead in sight of a potential playmate, I fell about when I read the description. It took me two weeks to unwind my right arm after he moved to yours!
Am watching the Paw Trax trial with interest - seems like a great idea.
Huge hugs all round please with an extra special hug for The Boy

I can't believe Slim has not been snaffled up after so many weeks - you have helped him to become a lovely dog Val who will fit brilliantly into a new family - and what a star he will be. Hope they read this thread soon.

Thanks, Audrey and Sally. We're happy with Slim and delighted to play a part in his early beginnings with SLR. It doesn't matter how long it takes to find his special family as he's fitted in with our household very well indeed. I'd rather he stay with us until we're all sure we've found the right environment for him to continue to blossom. He really is a very very smart dog so it would be a shame to waste any of that intelligence by grabbing the first home offer he receives.
For those just discovering Slim's thread now, you may be interested in knowing what a typical day is like for our dogs because this is what Slim's used to at the moment. Of course, he'd adapt to any kind of new regular routine given a little time.
7.00 am - Rise and shine. Dogs out into the garden to check out the facilities and weather! 7.30 am - Into the car and off for walk in the park/woods/forest for free running exercise 9-9.30 am - Return to house and chill 10 am - breakfast for the dogs (porridge oats/veggies/minced chicken carcass) 10.30 am - chill out until lunchtime 12.30 pm - Local walk round nature reserve, usually on lead 1 pm - Return for lunchtime snack for the dogs (2 chicken wings or tin sardines) 1.30 pm - After lunch snooze 3.30 pm - check out the garden facilities 4.30 pm - Dogs' dinners; best meal of the day! (raw meaty joints, bone in) 5.15 pm - check out the garden facilities 6 pm - haunt kitchen while humans cook dinner for themselves in case they drop food by accident 7.30 pm - crash out in front of the fire. Sneak onto sofa if opportunity arises 10 pm - check out the garden facilities 10.30 pm - Retire to bed when humans do likewise. Dogs sleep in their own bedroom, not ours!

Wow, that's an early start Val - I am lucky if I can get Rosie off her bed by 8.00am. Now the sun is coming up earlier each day I am guessing Slim has some lovely walks in the woods.

Hi Slim fans Slim is continuing to make very good progress. His mouthing habit is now definitely diminishing, and tomorrow morning is a red letter day. It will be his first day of being allowed off lead in the main part of Ringwood Forest instead of just the gated, fenced smaller area. His recall has improved to the point where he's now beginning to stay near by and he's learned to check back in with us from time to time to make sure he doesn't go too far away. We keep him muzzled to reduce his chances of hunting successfully and prevent him playing too roughly with either of the girls. Tia can also play rough, so she's muzzled too! Here are the dogs in the gated part of the forest yesterday morning: And playing about together in another part: Back at home that evening: No record of Slim's progress would be complete without photographic evidence of one of his fabulous lurcher leans: Slim is doing very well. He is now: - housetrained
- recallable
- funny and affectionate
- good with all other dogs, even if they're aggressive
- walks politely on lead
- very food-oriented and trainable
- easy to handle/clip nails/wear coats and muzzle as required
- excellent digestion/easy to feed
- playful and toy-oriented/will retrieve
- neutered, vaccinated, wormed and de-flead
- travels well in car
- good housedog/barks at front door bell
- needs companionship of at least one other dog
- can be left for up to 3 hours without issues or problems in the house
- does not need to be crated/not destructive

Hi Audrey
That's really kind of you to say. I'm blushing. But Slim is still a slim dog. Our vet, Louisa, says it's unlikely he's destined to be a heavyweight any time soon but he doesn't mind because he still chomps his way through three meals a day, regardless! He's being weighed tomorrow, so we'll know more then.
Slim has lots of energy and zest for life, and that's the important thing. I didn't know his kennel name was Colin, though; that gave us both quite a laugh. I think Kevin the teenager fits him better. HAHAHAHA!

Slim has put on weight. It's official - he now weighs in at a healthy 24.5 kgs and is well on his way to reaching the suggested 25.5 - 26 kgs our vet thought might suit his frame. Tia, who once thought she'd like to be a size zero, has also put back all the weight she lost initially on converting to a raw diet. She's a healthy 22.5 kgs now. Chloe has, er, put on a bit because she benefits with a light lunch she didn't used to have, but we've reduced her main meals accordingly now. A girl doesn't want to lose her figure just before her 10th birthday on Monday 8th. Slim has now been offlead and running free in Ringwood Forest a couple of times now and he's behaved brilliantly. He has begun to understand he should check in with us regularly to make sure he doesn't get lost, and he's beginning to understand why Bill and I point and shout, "this way, dogs!" at the top of our voices sometimes. This morning we spent a happy 1.5 hours roaming the best bits of the forest with all three dogs running free. We met other dog walkers too, and all three of our pack behaved very well. Here's some pictures: Me, checking to see where Slim is on Google maps, courtesy of the PawTrax unit on Slim's collar (stupid woman, can't you see Tia watching you?). Hey, Kate, check out my new pink wellies! Hope you approve.
