I'm running out of superlatives to describe this lovely lad!
I just wish I had his temperament - Mr Cool, or what? ;D

It would seem that Bran is getting a bit more confident and has decided that the odd bit of wildlife chasing is ok. We were on a scouting walk today at Moat Park and let him off for a blast. He spotted some sea gulls and decided they would make a good target so went at them full pelt. Nearly at them he spots a squirrel very close by and diverts at that. Now luckily for the squirrel Bran's brakes are useless and he went straight over it bowling the poor thing along the ground. By the time Bran had turned for a second attack the squirrel had made it to the nearest tree and was heading up it! It's amazing how high a Lurcher can jump !!
Lesley was not the least impressed with this new found boldness he has, as she is a lover of all things furry. It would seem the probability of a muzzle for walkies is getting even more likely.

Lesley and I both, but lurchers are lurchers and that is what they do! I hate it when Meg and Sofi hunt out a rabbit or squirrel, and my heart is always in my mouth; but they don't know it's wrong, it is just within them. And yep, Megan is muzzled when the sun is up and the squiggles are a running! Rabbits too!!

It's ok, we know this is natural instinct for Lurchers. It's just a shame as up to now he has virtually ignored squirrels etc. It's as if he only twigged this week what type of dog he is Should have some more up to date piccies soon, once Lesley downloads them.

Took Bran for a lovely walk on lead this morning and took treats with me, which I must confess I don't normally do because he is on the lead. I thought I would practice 'wait' command at the road. I'm not too worried about 'sit' as he doesn't seem to comfortable with that. He was doing really well, but as I've read, definitely learning in situ. Did brilliantly at the roads, but not quite so well just walking along with loose leash. It is definitely a learning curve with Bran. Having always (cat now sitting in front of screen, so can't see a thing, so apologise in advance for any mis-spellings) pups who are quite easy to train, you suddenly realise not all dogs are the same. (I know it always takes me a while - I should have been born a blonde - no offence to any blondes who maybe reading this - both my daughters are blonde and they are very bright, so I'm not quite sure where the saying comes from.) Anyway I digress; I've suddenly realised that he is listening most of the time and actually doing what he is asked, it's just that he can't seem to do 'instant'. I noticed when on loose leash (trying saying that after 1 or 2 drinks), when asked to 'wait' he did but after a step or 2; the same with recall - on some occasions you call, he will come back but has to circle you to slow down, rather like a liner. I don't know if this is normal or just Bran, but now having realised this it makes it that little bit easier for training him. Obviously, like all animals, I suppose, you have to have them for a while to really understand them.

Fern is quite good at the wait but sometimes it's almost as if she can't bear to wait for you to catch up and continually sneaks forward until i growl at her , then she'll wait. And sadly super good at catching stuff, they even bought down a stag in the christmas hols much to complete horror of my kids. needless to say they are both wearing bells again and funnily enough don't get near anything now. Does sound like Santa coming through the woods though.

How is Seamus now Barney? Is that leg getting back up to running mode?

How is Seamus now Barney? See today's post in General Chat. I'm afraid running mode is still a fair way off, but lolloping mode is edging ever closer! ;D

Just an update piccy for you all - what a surprise Bran is horizontal. I promise this was not a posed piccy, they did it all by themselves. I think prior to this Bran had been "eating" Lucy. ;D

We've just had to upgrade on the crate for Lucy as she's growing so fast! Mind you, it could always double up for the grandson....... ;D

I wish. Little git surpassed himself today. Thought lovely sunny day we'd (daughter Sarah) take them to our local country park.
Nice open space but with a few woody places. They had a nice run around, met another dog, but put Bran on lead as he was getting a bit over boisterous with Lucy. Got to another field leading into woods, thought let him off for a last bit of run. Little sod saw a squirrel and was off. No amount of calling would get him back. Walking through the woody bit all you could see were flashes of Bran, it was like something out of Blair Witch, just a shadow flitting across between the trees.
Eventually he reappeared back in the field where it all began. Sarah said. "well when they run they do circles", I think this was just coincidence".
When we got home he went to his crate and was told to think about his actions today ;D
Having had this happen I will now spray Bran a lovely shade of pink, at least this way I can follow him in the woods rather than him blending in.

Walking through the woody bit all you could see were flashes of Bran, it was like something out of Blair Witch, just a shadow flitting across between the trees. This is an issue with your brindle and your woods. They go flippin' invisible! Brindles only seem to come in two colours, (a) camouflage and (b) mud-plastered and therefore camouflaged. I have jangly things on Sykes's collar (haven't managed to track down a bell yet) so I can sort of guess where he is as long as he's not too far away. He's so hard to see when he runs in the woods - and he has a bit of white on him. Am I right in thinking Bran is solidly brindle?

Oh yes. The jingly idea is good. We've seen some nice bells on ebay it think.

I have a luminous striped collar, bright yellow with a reflector stripe on it that I put on Megan. I can then make her out in the woods. ;D But both Megan and Sofi normally wear bells. I keep forgetting to put them on because of the noise they make indoors.

Another good idea, thanks Jenny. As Ian just pointed out, with Bran I don't think indoor jingling would be a problem as he doesn't move around. ;D
I still think spraying him pink would work.
