Great to see Steve on the forum. Welcome !! Lovely update on Summer. Steve you saw what it was like at my place, six comfy seats, four people and some still ended up sitting on the floor !! Lurchers rule, especially when comfort is concerned.

A very warm welcome to the forum Steve - we look forward to your participation & hope you enjoy the experience.
My apologies if Summer's brief stay with us contributed to your loss of personal seating space.

Brilliant news! I'm pleased to see that you're getting the hang of lurcher ownership so quickly Steve!

I have owned 3 lurchers over the last 50 years so Im lucky really I know what to expect . My last lurcher Bryn was that nervous it took me 6 weeks sitting one side of a room while she sat the other shaking before I could get her confidence. Had her from about 2 until she was stolen in 1998 at 14 . This is why its taken me so long to get another. Its heartbreaking

Welcome to the forum Steve and congratulations on your new addition. Sorry to hear about the theft of a much loved hound. I would be heartbroken if one of mine were stolen.😢 I hope you keep coming back and keep us updated on Summer's progress 😊

Summer is coming on leaps and bounds (literally). Still very scared of noise but quite happy to play in the garden with Roxie. Very settled in the house she will either cuddle up to me or the wife on the sofa or Roxie if Roxie does come in and lay down. Walking on the lead is good and I have a 30ft training lead so she gets a bit of running round out and about .Still a work in progress but we are getting there

Great update Steve. Having met Summer very briefly at the Funday, where she was pretty overwhelmed and scared, it is good to know that she is with someone who understands her and is helping her get over her fears. Sounds like Roxie is just the companion she needs.

Well I have just experienced Summer having a major meltdown whilst having a walk . She pulled that hard jumping at the lead Ive pulled a muscle in my back. The reason .Some fireworks going off at a fete 3MILES away . Have to work on that . She is now cuddled up with me on the sofa. Its a pity because she started the day off with so much confidence today

Oh bless her. You sometimes wonder what on earth these poor dogs have been through. Sorry to hear about your back too. But remember that you're doing great work with her, and you and Summer will turn this around!

Oh no, such a shame as she was doing so well. Hope your back recovers soon, as well as Summer's confidence.

Poor Summer. Fireworks are a pain in the proverbial and you never know when to expect them. I hope she soon gets over the experience and your back recovers soon. I can strongly recommend bungee leads as they take the sting out of a lurching Lurcher. Check out Ezydog.co.uk

If I have a strong/bouncy dog, I double up with a lead on the collar AND a harness with a lead connected between the shoulder blades. Gives much better control if they start twisting and also helps if they try and run. Good luck - I think Summer will get more confident as she bonds with you more and more.

These were the panic attacks that I was describing to you. Poor lass goes into total, unreasonable panic and fear reaction. I found that she was responding to a very firm command of HEEL! and ENOUGH!. As these were familiar commands they seemed to cut through the panic to some degree and walking on fast so that she had to trot to keep up usually helped to settle her back down. Once the incident was over and she was listening then I gave her lots of praise and treats. It wasn't perfect but it was an awful lot better than her initial panics when I struggled just to hold on to her. Sounds as though you're doing a brilliant job with her and that she and Roxie have really teamed up now. Will try and ring you.

I am recovering from torn rotator cuff muscles and would recommend using the type of dog walking belt made for cani cross to anchor any strong dog likely to pul or lunge excessively. The belts fit on the hips and most have a shock absorbing insert between you and the dog. Mine was made by Indi Dog and has leg loops to keep it in position and a carabiner to hold multiple leads. I was doubtful about it but it has enabled me to go on walking the three dogs together and start mending. I hope you soon recover from your injury.
