"Hey Harley, I've got an idea....lets have a digging contest!" *whistling in innocence* "Nope I'm not looking. There'll be trouble Phoebe." "It's my birthday Harley. Have you got me a pressie?" "Whadya mean NO!? How very dare you! Take that!" "Don't be such a wuss. Now dig that hole!" "Atta boy!" I managed to catch a bit of off lead footage on Phoeb's birthday (clip is below), not much as they'd already had a session of manic mud flinging around the garden. We went back to the arboretum again yesterday and Harley ran and ran and ran and ran. The two of them charged about in huge sweeping circles making us both so dizzy. He didn't stand a chance of catching her but boy did he give her a good run. Dear boy had his tongue lolling out, travelled home in total silence and flaked out when we got home. Sometimes Phoebe gives this lovely lad a break.. But when she doesn't, there is a lot of this... (excuse the floor, I hadn't vacuumed the latest batch of muddy foot deposits up) He is so tolerant of her nuttiness bless him but when Phoebe and Kali set too bouncing around playing bitey face together he grumbles at them like he wants then to stop and give us all a break. We couldn't agree more Harley I'll miss this boy when he goes, he has a lovely presence at home, so affectionate and chatty. I tried filming our chat the other night but he fell silent when I got my phone out. I'm sure he was asking very nicely if he could please have the sausages I was about to cook. Had I left them unattended I've no doubt he would've helped himself...he was caught red pawed trying to reach the liver cake cooling at the back of the work top & a left over piece of bacon disappeared too with big muddy paw prints left in it's place

Love your updates. Harley looks to be good all round. If he can tolerate Phoebe he should be up for anything!

I'm so pleased the updates are enjoyed. I hope they they are informative to any prospective adopters in deciding if their home is the one that offers everything he enjoys. As I mentioned previously there are a couple of things that needed a bit of work... 1) Harley is much better at travelling in the car now, it's a case of the more he goes out in it the better he is and he is definitely happier on the back seat. He leaps in without any encouragement so that is a good sign but will equally jump out as quick when the journey is over. 2) Tim has walked him a few times on his own and he is not so strong on the lead without the girls around him. Last night's walk in the dark his lead was actually completely slack the whole time but with more going on outside in the daylight he was stronger this morning. Harley would benefit from being exercised away from roads whenever possible. We live in a small village and he is nervy of any passing traffic when we do road walks (this could stem from when he was hit by a car last year), so walks on busy roads would certainly upset him and be potentially risky if he was scared enough to pull. I've been trying to clip his claws, the front ones especially are quite long but he's not keen on his front feet being touched, he pulls them away (again it could stem from the accident) but when he's relaxed and laying down I've nipped the tips off three of them so far. The more it's done and in a relaxed way he'll get used to it I'm sure. He is very trusting, you can touch him anywhere and with the amount of mud from our garden that's been sticking to his underside he's needed cleaning in some delicate places without even a flinch. He can be barky at other dogs although not so much when he is on his own and it does seem to be nothing more than excitement. Living here with four girls if they tell him they've had enough he turns away and doesn't react aggressively at all. You've seen how much he puts up with from Phoebe! He is a lovable sensitive softy

Great updates Sal. For what it's worth, I think your assessment of his traffic fear could be spot on Sal...the road where he ran out onto and was hit is a very busy main road 40 mph.

Lovely update as usual Sal, I really do hope this boy finds his forever sofa soon, (for your sake not his, because I am sure that he would be quite happy to stay put)

Judging by the way he greets us and my parents when they call in I think Harley thinks he is home Toni. He gives my Mum and Dad as many kisses and leans and helicopter tails as he gives us. I was hoping they'd fall for him and although they have, it's not the right time for them.

A quickie update on handsome Harley hound with more improvements ... He sat down on the back seat of the car from the moment we left home for the 20 minute journey to our walk today, just looking out of the window He and Phoebe had a good run about with each other, a New Forest ranger's dog and chasing a toy. His recall is good, coming back to ' Harley come' and a tasty reward (we use this command at home and it works there too). He and Phoebe charged off through the trees to a spot I usually have to go and retrieve Phoebe and Kali from but one call out and they both came running back After the charging about he walked on a completely slack lead and travelled back home again in the car good as gold, giving a little whine as we turned in to our road. A lovely satisfying afternoon and the sun is out, what a bonus They're all zonked out now so I'm indulging in a cuppa while they have a snooze.

Being a little'un I know how hard it can be walking a weighty lurcher who can pull their hardest when they want to (our Jack was a prime example) so I've been reluctant to walk Harley on my own in case he was still too strong (as can be the case when he's out with our girls) but he's been doing so well with Tim that this afternoon I took Harley out on his own for a lead walk around the village. The lead was slack the whole time & we passed three dogs without even a murmur, I'd go so far as to say he was actually nervous of one so I turned him away & stood between them so he wouldn't feel threatened. He's a good 10kg heavier than Phoebe but was so much easier to walk than she is. This boy just keeps going up in my estimations Someone adopt him pleeease before I weaken! A few other things he does...chases his tail, silly boy . If the patio door isn't open wide enough for him to fit through he'll put what he can through the gap (head & neck for example) & lean into the door so his weight slides it open! Clever boy . He can catch treats & toys. He loves playing with toys of every kind. He's been taking them one at a time from the toy basket today. My work room floor is now littered with them.

I think this boy might be worming his feet under the table and Phoebe obviously adores him! She undoubtedly does and he is more tempting than ever but being boringly realistic and practical 5 is too many. It's great that he walks so nicely on his own but not if he's strong being walked with the others..they'd have me over in no time. Phoebe goes from being as light as feather you can scoop up in your arms to a muscle bound pulling power house. I wouldn't stand a chance if they both did it! I've spent two hours walking the five of them this afternoon in shifts and ideally it would've been longer but I cant really do that every day unfortunately. One other minor detail...we cant get all 5 in the car at once. That would make our holidays tricky. Nice try Heather
