A rather overdue update but now the festivities are over and the house guests have departed here's what handsome huggable hound Harley has been up to. Oh and just to quash any speculation about Harley becoming a Hunter...sadly he won't be. As much as we love him and he gets on with all our girls, five is too many for us. So, on with our observations about this wonderful boy and some piccies.
Harley met our vet for his first vaccination. He was rather pacey and unsettled but didn't make a sound at the injection and weighed in at 30.90 kg.
Since discovering the super king size upstairs viewing platform Phoebe and Harley take the responsibility of neighbourhood watch seriously...
All is quiet in the road so time for a snooze break..
This lovely boy has settled in and bonded with us quickly so I hope that will be a reflection of how easily he will adjust to life in a new home. He's met my parents a few times, greets them enthusiastically and brings them a toy as he does if one of us returns from being out. He really is so affectionate. He loves to be in contact with his humans, leans in, kisses aplenty, roaches on the furniture and us, sleeps with the other dogs against him (or in Phoebe's case...on him), he plays bitey-face and bitey-leg with Phoebs, all gently as is his mouthing of our hands just for fun. He is a little head shy and doesn't like toys being shaken near his face (he backs away) but he is very trusting and loves ear rubs and plays tug with toys with the other dogs and us. As Tim mentioned you can have lots of chats with Harley, he's quite expressive with his funny noises, head movements and paw raising. He'll always let you know if he wants something or if meal time is over due and will never fail to make you smile and laugh
He really is a happy boy with a waggy tail. He does a perfect sit, raises a paw for treats and waits patiently for his food which he doesn't rush. He'll bound upstairs for bed hugs. I had to laugh one morning in particular as he thundered upstairs and landed on Tim who let out all sorts of noises, I went up to see Harley laying on top of Tim with each of his front legs either side of Tim's chest He does love a good hug
A rare glimpse of sunshine drew him to the sunny seat to soak up the rays..
Such a kissable schnozzer..
We don't encourage stick play but whilst being supervised this one was of particular interest.."How very dare he! That's MY stick!"..
Ever get the feeling you're being watched? She's behind yooou!
"Corr Phoebs that stick tastes good
"
"Harley ol'bean would you mind awfully if I had my stick back please?"
"Chase yer for it!"
Who can resist those brown eyes and his silky soft mohawk..
"No one's looking, I'm gonna dig dig a hole tra la la la laaa. Just a little one though not like Phoebe's craters."..
Kali hasn't made many appearances in the pics so just to prove she and Harley are not one and the same here they are together..
Considering we have three young lurchers in the house over Christmas the event passed without too much drama surprisingly. Lots of muddy paw prints everywhere. The Christmas tree is raised off the ground and in the corner of Rosie's convalescing area so that at least is out of harms way. The left over turkey disappeared though. Harley, would you know anything about that? ..
Hmm. Not inclined to make eye contact? I wonder why..
Sleeping off that "I've eaten too much feeling"..
Harley had a good run about at the arboretum so we could try him off lead somewhere enclosed. His recall is pretty good. Despite lots of interest and excitement in the forest smells, with the lure of liver treats he came back well. His speed wasn't quite up to the two tearaways but he gave them a good chase.
Just two things to be worked on...
1) He is vocal and very strong on the lead when we pass other dogs outdoors. This could be because he's being walked as a foursome so we will try meeting other dogs with Harley on his own to see if he's being influenced by our excited girls at all. That said, we had friends visit here with their two greyhounds and he greeted them at home with not a single bark, just gentle friendliness and a waggy tail.
2) When travelling in the car Harley doesn't settle, he pants and sits or stands looking out of the windows. Jack used to do this when he travelled in the back of the car but when on the back seat he was fine, so we will try that with Harley too.
He has such a good time with our girls and is so good natured with them that we feel Harley would benefit from being in a home with another youngish dog, or one who will happily engage in running around and playing with toys. He will play on his own but our observations of him are that he enjoys canine company as much as human company. If you would like a boy that shows never ending affection, wags his tail looking in to your eyes as if he knows your thoughts and gives the best morning bed snuggles then Harley is for you
I can totally understand how hard it must've been for his owner to let Harley and Joe go.
