that's really good news. She seemed like she was pretty resilient when we met and that she would easily bounce back. It sounds like she would do well in a family with another dog, and she was fine with my neighbours daughter, 11 year-old Jaeme. Looking forward to seeing her (and you and Zephyr!) again soon

We have good news - Poppy is progressing all the time. She has had a few runs off lead in the secure field at the common (lots of dogs and people) and she has behaved very well. She is very fast. No problems with any dogs - big or small - and once she has a little race around the field, she comes back nicely. She had a good play with a small cockerpoo yesterday (of a similar age) and showed no nipping/mounthing play.
If we stop for a while, she will sit down and wait patiently although she still jumps up (especially at people she knows - she is very popular with the regulars). We met up with Redsnapper, Daisy, Comet and Alice this morning and had a good walk. Comet loved racing around the wooded bit and Alice behaved so well in the field as other dogs came and went. Christine put us all to shame by doing a whistle recall - all three of her dogs immediately raced to her. I think it is the GRWE emergency recall technique. Looked very impressive.
I think it is safe to say that she has no SA as she is happy to disappear into another room for a bit of 'me time'. She enjoys her food but also likes toys - both of which can be used as rewards during training. She won't be difficult to train.

We had a lovely walk with Phillipa, Zephyr and Poppy yesterday. It was great to see how much Poppy has come on. She was able to go off the lead and really loved running and playing with all the other dogs at Tadley Common - all of whom Phillipa seemed to know! She was a good girl about coming back although the distraction of everything around her was a bit too much for her to ignore at times. She has the typical young dog characteristic of wanting to see and explore everything, but she's clearly a very quick learner - I got her to do a down with just a few tries - so she'll gradually get used to looking to Phillipa for direction rather than everywhere else. She is such a lovely little girl, so friendly with people and other dogs. If I didn't already have 3 dogs I would definitely want to take her home.... she's a very affectionate, sweet-natured happy little girl. I took some photos of her with the other dogs and also a couple of videos. You can see in the videos how comfortable she is with other dogs and how interested she is in everything around her... and how pretty she is, of course! Hello Comet! My three (Daisy, Comet and Alice) waiting for treats with Poppy looking to see what's going on and Zephyr in the background watching Phillipa ... and here's a couple of short videos, with apologies for my finger in the corner. I couldn't see the iPhone screen because it was such a bright sunny day so had to guess what I was videoing! As you can see, she knows her name and wags her tail a lot!

Thanks for the pics Christine. I need another pair of hands to take photos when I am out.
Today I let Zephyr and Poppy off lead at the same time (gulp) in the enclosed field. As expected, they loved it and raced around - Zephyr chasing Poppy. But Zephyr was a bit too fast and strong - although it didn't stop Poppy coming back for more. Only hared around for a few mins but it wore them out until now.
Tomorrow I am going to see if Poppy can spend a few minutes watching the starters agility class to see how she responds.

That's a big step forward to let them off together... you've come a long way in a short time. It will be really interesting to see how she gets on at the agility class. I bet she'll want to be off doing whatever Zephyr is doing!

Doh!!!... just seen that you put the videos on this thread as well, so ignore my comment on the other thread. You really are doing a great job with her. She's having such fun. Next she'll be trying her paw at agility!

Poppy is really coming on and settling in to our routine.
I was just reading the opening comment on her thread - the information that was given by her relinquishing owners. I would say that I have seen no signs of issues with small dogs - in fact there was a little terrier that ran yesterday (a bit frightened of her) and Poppy ran after her but just over took her. No indication of nipping or bowling over. In fact to my eyes, she seems very dog savvy. Knows how to react to dogs ensure that there are no negative consequences.
She is very sweet natured and outgoing. She loves being let off in the field so she can have a run and meet the other dogs. But once I get onto the common itself and she goes back on the lead, she is quite happy. I think she would be best in a home with another dog as she does love a play with Zephyr - and her toys.
Negatives - she is still a bit destructive, she likes to tear up tennis balls. She also has a bit of a bark - not loud but quite high pitched. It is normally only once or twice a day - she is trying to communicate something to me but I haven't quite worked out what yet.

If it is once or twice a day, is it shortly after she eats? Many of them have a mad moment, usually barking and some play with each other after food, around 5-10 mins after food. I call it the protein rush!

I call it the protein rush! Could be, it is often in the evening - I have tried seeing if she wants a wee and its not that. She is barking at me - not Zephyr, her playmate but it could be just general excitement and joie de vivre.

Bella shouts at Del when he's eating his dinner. Trying to make him drop it I think. You and Zephyr are doing a fab job with Poppy. She won't want to leave.

Poppy sounds like a great young lurcher, and very normal. We get the 'madness' after meals from all three here. It does not last very long thankfully. Tearing off the yellow fluff on tennis balls and disembowelling them is something Sophie has never grown out of I am afraid. She is only allowed to play with Kong balls or other indestructible ones. As Dylan is addicted to retrieving, balls are only given to each dog when I play with him/her individually to avoid total chaos.
Dylan also used to go quite mad in the evenings barking at me and zooming around when he was younger and still demands a play session with me when all I want to do is flop. The amount of exercise and play with other dogs he had had during the day made no difference. It got so bad at one time (around one year old) I resorted to sitting down with him on a lead asking him to lie down and stay put by me instead of going berserk until he calmed down, especially if it happened after 8 pm which was his 'overtired' threshold.

I let both Poppy and Zephyr off in the field at the same time yesterday. I was worried that Zeph would be too much for her but it was ok for a first go. She still likes to hang onto his muzzle but she knows the drop command and does respond - even if she then can't resist it again. She is pretty fearless but comes back to me when she has had enough.
She is really loving getting a run in the field everyday and meeting all her new friends (both human and doggy). We then walk round the common on her lead and she is happy to sniff, pee in any puddle she finds and only gets a bit exciteable if we meet another dog. Once we come home she is happy to settle down, snuggled next to me if possible. Although, she also will go off and find somewhere to sleep on her own if I am busy.
She really will make someone a superb companion. She has very little baggage that I can see. She just needs the work you would put into any young dog to show her good behaviour and boundaries - and she picks them up pretty quickly.

We met the gorgeous Poppy this morning at the Greyhoundlifeline Open day, she really is the most gorgeous little girl. She was perfectly behaved with any dogs she met including my 2, she wanted to sniff everyone but no aggression at all, just an around happy and well behaved girl. Well done Phillippa, you have worked wonders with her, she now really deserves her own sofa, and I don't understand why there doesn't seem to be much interest.

We met up with Phillipa, Zephyr and Poppy yesterday for a walk. Poppy is such a lovely happy little girl. She was very pleased to see me and did some perfect "sits" for treats. We let Alice and Poppy off their leads to run together and they were perfectly matched. They ran together really well. Alice can get a bit over-the-top when she's running but Poppy wasn't going to let her get away with that and they both ran and ran until they were exhausted. I got a bit anxious about Alice going near to the fence at the side of the field as it is next to a busy road and she could jump over it from a standing start, but everything was OK - apart from my heart-rate! - and they had a great time.
Poppy is going to make someone a lovely companion and friend for another dog. She's very sweet-natured and happy and a typical young dog, keen to explore and play. Let's hope someone comes along soon for this very pretty little girl.

Poppy and Alice were great together. I think that Alice was having far too much fun to think about doing a runner. If we get them together again, I'll try and get a video - it was lovely to watch.
As Janet says, I took her to Greyhound Lifeline Fun Day today and she behaved very well. She also attracted some attention - although I didn't want to push her too hard as I was at another rescue. There is also a bit of interest in her locally - so you never know. People really need to meet this girl to understand how sweet she is - she greets every dog with kisses. If she gets told off (which is rare), she immediately withdraws. Once she grows up a bit and has had a bit more basic obedience training, she will be a very easy dog. She loves people - and is very affectionate.
I know she looks like an ordinary, little lurcher but she is very special and will make a brilliant companion. She is bright and biddable and although strong, small enough to control quite easily (she learns quickly). She also seems pretty robust - agile and fast and so able to cope with most situations.
