Happy new year to all humans and hounds!!!! Stayed in yesterday eve as we get a lot of big fireworks going off very close by and I didn't know how Dusky would react. He didn't! Just slept peacefully on my bed with the other hounds, looked up at me once when a 'bomb' shook the house. No problems there, what an easy little dog.

Hey, we have a recall !!!!! Started a little training and recall seemed the most important. A whistle and a little bit of livercake/sausage and hey presto, he's got it. Tried when he was in fast play today and he came the second I blew the whistle. I whistled him back several times and he was perfect ( trouble is the other three are good too so I need 4x treats each time!)Bet he won't do it again or when any ones watching.

Dusky was castrated today. Felt really mean leaving him at the vets. The house seemed empty without him even with my other three underfoot. All's well now though, he's home, a little wobbly but would quite happily have torn off accross the field by the vets cos he could see RABBITS!!!! He WILL take it easy for a few days! Hopefully no problems and thats all over with. Phew.

I love those two little black dawgs sat behind in that group shot. They've got that - 'er we're here too - darn lurchers' ! look. Funny.

Is it right that the whippet x are worse for the rabbits and recall. I literally have no recall with Kez and don't even bother anymore. I met a lady in the summer who'd had whippets for 75 years and said she'd never had one that she could say was obedient!!

I think most of the sight hounds are a bit iffy with recall around rabbits. The only one I can rely on is Zac my saluki x greyhound. Dusky has learnt through his tummy that a certain whistle means come for a treat but he can still be 'deaf' on occasion. Emmy my mini Saluki is reasonable but not 100%. I was told by the receptionist at the vets today that we can actually be prosecuted if our hounds take a rabbit as it is technically classed as hunting. Whoops!!! Can I plead deafness and disobedience in mitigation? The Vet visit was for Duskys post op check and second vac. He's fine and oblivious to whats been done! Just wants to PLAY!!!!

Yep it's true, you can be prosecuted for letting your dog rabbit. Our old whippet recalls when she wants to, she just keeps us in sight.

Dusky attended his first SLR walk yesterday. Off lead for most of the time. Very good with his recall and got on well with all hounds and humans! Had a smashing time, got covered in mud and slept for three hours solid afterwards. One happy little dog!

He was very well behaved Sue and seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself. He is a lovely boy, he would make someone a great companion (thats if you can bear to let him go )

Dusky posing with his best freind Emmy, thats when he's not playing chase and tripping her up by grabbing one of her back legs and sending her base over apex. Poor Emm, with her gammy front leg she loses her balance and he knows it. However her hero,Zac, piles in and removes Dusky by the scruff of his neck. They trot off all meek and well behaved for 30 seconds and then off they tank again!! Only problem I'm having is house training him. Doing all the usual, anticipating and taking him out, lots of praise when he goes in the right place and a good moan at him if I catch him going indoors. He just doesn't seem to 'get it' even wees in his crate. Don't think he's got any problems as he goes all night with out a wee and performs in quantity as long as I take him straight out. Any suggestions for achieving that 'light bulb' moment please???

Sorry there is no light bulb moment coming from me , but what a great photo I hope that he "gets it" soon.

I love the blackies - how's Dusky doing? We took Peppa outside every hour or two, as well as the usual times. And mooched about till she relaxed or got bored. After she'd finished whichever, she got a bit of sausage or cheese, and a huge fuss. If she did both, she got two treats. If we caught her going indoors, we just said "Peppa, outside!" and propelled her out there pronto. This does sometimes leave a trail though... That is a fabulous photo with Emmy. Can we see some more to show how big the little man is now? Angie

Sorry, I must take some more pics. He has grown!! He was, if anything, slightly smaller than Emmy when he arrived, he's now an inch or two taller. Makes me wonder if he's younger than we first thought the way he's grown. He's also losing some of that very plush coat, perhaps it was a puppy coat. I tried a muzzle on him yesterday (trying to protect Emmy a little in fast play) not fazed at all, obviously worn one before. He's keenly interested in anything resemblig a lure and bearing in mind how heavily muscled he is I wondered if he was intended for long dog racing but was too clumsy (doesn't know where he begins and ends, can't corner and regularly falls off the settee) Hence he got dumped We'll never know. He and Emmy play and sleep together, Zac referees. He's no real trouble and the house training has got a little better since I put him onto wet food. On the clumsy front, he's the only one of mine that has 'lurchered' me and Emmy in one hit!!! Tree, what tree? thump!! and so on!! He really is a character and adorable.

The lovely Dusky came to visit this evening - brought foster mummy Sue with him too ;D He's a gorgeous little lad and even though was slightly overwelmed by my lot he handled himself brilliantly with zero aggression or issues. He's got a beautiful little face with the most gorgeous eyes
