Hello esteemed SLR ladies and gents. I'm placing this here as I cannot work out how to start a new thread, (not usually a dunderhead ). Anyhow. When Margot arrived I brought her in via the front door as opposed to the gate on the drive and despite exploring the downstairs and garden and having a tinkle, within an hour she had walked into the hall and expelled a tiny drop of urine*. No problem whatsoever. I cleaned up without any fuss and thought no more about it. However, today I left early to do a much needed Lidl/Aldi run as since she has been with us I have done precious little around the home, choosing to spend time getting to know Margot. She was left in the capable hands of my husband who delayed his journey into work in order that she wasn't 'home alone'. On my way home, I called him to say that I was on my way back and he said he had just walked into a teensy drop of tinkle in exactly the same spot in the hall as the one she produced during that first hour with us. She had barked a coupe of times and "spoke". Is this behaviour her stressing because I left her, classic separation anxiety or is she marking the door she knows she can exit from? Or am I anthropomorphising? Is there a way to prevent this and as ever, any and all suggestions are welcome. *Margot doesn't drink much but thats not a problem as her food is some 68% water, (blood) and she does drink occasionally. Hence she doesn't pass much urine and when she does, it seems to be an effort. Is this normal and can spayed bitches suffer from cystitis?

When we first had Ella she had frequent accidents, generally so excited she couldn't quite contain herself. In this instance, I would say she did speak but it wasn't necessarily understood. We struggle with George sometimes, not knowing what is a "I need to go out" whinge from a "it's about time you got up" whinge. I would go back to basics, frequent trips outside to the garden, and try to incorporate some sort of words , we use "wee wees" , others use different words. Lots of praise when she performs. And yes they can have urinary infections but I wouldn't think that straight away, Ella only does little wees compared to Georges deluges

Sorry not sure about the tinkle problem but on the separation front it is probably time now that you started to leave her alone, say ten minutes to start with and build up. She could develop separation angst if you are with her all the time. I am sure someone will post re the wee problem.

I think it's possible she was stressing as you have spent so much time with her so far, may be an idea to start to get her used to you being seperated from her sometimes when you are at home so she doesn't stress when you go out. It's very common for rehomed dogs to get so attached they suffer seperation anxiety. As catsanddogs said spayed bitches can still get urinary tract infections but unless she is spotting a lot I wouldn't think it's that. Does seem a little odd she is appearing to strain when she goes though.

Hello esteemed SLR ladies and gents. I'm placing this here as I cannot work out how to start a new thread, (not usually a dunderhead ). On this....you can't create a new thread on this section as I think only Jenny can. In 'General Chat' and other sections, you will see 'Create Post' near the top right in the pale grey banner. Click on that, put your Subject line in and type away. I was going to suggest a little stress wee especially if she's always had someone with her. If you've been very hands -on/cuddly with her, you probably need to back that off a bit for a while too. No major fuss when you leave and return. If you would like more help on how to work through SA, there are a couple of very good sections on the Greyhound Gap forum which is how we got Alfie through his (quite mild, admittedly) SA. greyhoundgap.proboards.com/thread/29756/new-hound-homegreyhoundgap.proboards.com/thread/29758/okay-late-seperation-anxietyI don't think the mods will mind me cross posting these.

Thank you for your help on the tinkling in an inappropriate area. She does ask to go out into the garden by standing at the door if its closed, but more often than not, it's open anyway. Fresh water is always available and it will be interesting to see if her intake increases with the heat in this weekend's mini heatwave. Margot is seeing The Vet tomorrow for her final check-up, post spaying, and I'll mention the straining to produce urine issue. And thanks for the info on new thread creation. I'm seeing Freya and Parv this afternoon with Margot as she badly needs to be shown what to do with a toy, a bone and chew as her only source of entertainment is fly catching, (makes you wonder if that was a protein supplement to her food rations in her earlier life?), and tail chasing.

She could have been kept in a confined space hence the tail chasing.

Diluted white vinegar should rid the scent of where she is peeing so she will be less likely to go back to the same spot. My westie used to do tiny tinkles from excitement. Margot is still young so she will take time to realise exactly where she needs to go. I agree with getting her used to being left. Start small and build it up. Crate training is good to start at a young age. It's the one thing I regret not using with my westies. Have fun with Parv and Freya xx

wow, super pics of both Margo and Freya. Margo will soon get used to playing. It might be her energy levels are a bit low at the moment after her spay. She will get used to doing zoomies when she is ready. Well done both.

Morning Margot has been back to the vet for her post-spay check and general looksie. She's such a chilled hound who saunters into The Vet without a hint of anxiety, is examined on the floor, doesn't mind being examined and takes everything in her stride. The wound has healed beautifully so she can have a proper pamper session soon, although she has a fear of water in any container, ie. her water bowl- if I pick it up to refresh, she looks at me pleadingly, and cowers, thinking perhaps that I am going to tip it over her Speaks volumes of her dreadful treatment in her formative year. She's fine with lakes and puddles but the shower frightens her. I can well imagine her being 'cooled down' after being worked by having a bucket of water chucked at her We had a chat about her raw diet and I am thrilled that when weighed she is now 16.2 kgs so in almost 2 weeks she has put on 1.1kgs despite all that faffing about rejecting anything tinned or dry and also being post spay and feeling poorly? Again, maybe a reflection of her previous diet, having caught she was then tossed a wabbit for her trouble? She's due for her 2nd set of immunisations after 14th May. She's now snoozing in her crate, (her choice)after having sunned herself. Yesterdays madcap session with Freya has caught up with her and Im wondering how Freya is doing today... Although it's quiet here with only birdsong, she does appear to be sensitive to loud noises and the crate is her refuge when it all gets too much. I'm driving to Stansted in an hour or so to collect my daughter, the only member of the family not to have met and subsequently fallen for Margot Its a short visit as she's nipping to Brighton for the weekend, flying back to The Netherlands early on Monday, but Margot will be showered with affection. She and I are voting later
