Lovely update as usual. Our first dog used to run and hide at loud voices or if your hand was raised. Some of these poor hounds have a dreadful start to life. Margot will blossom under your care. Enjoy your daughters visit. Rowlfs post lunch walkies will be to the polling station!

My Greta's strange with noises, she doesn't mind being in a house with lots going on (when we visited my mums for a BBQ last year), but back at our house, drop the smallest thing on the floor and she ups and leaves the room.

My daughter meets Margot. This is what 16 years of yearning for a hound looks like We've been relatively quiet on the updates but that doesn't mean it's all gone mammaries skywards, it's just that we have been out and about in Epping Forest, enjoying the good weather, meeting up with Parveen and the exhuberant Freya who has been teaching Margot *to be more hound*. Freya has shown Margot that it's ok to eat marrowbone treats, play with toys, dig holes and generally have fun! Margot is still extremely fussy about her food and seems to be almost 'apologetic' when she eats. A voracious eater she is not. At the moment, yet it's early days seeing as this is only week 3 and she's been through so much in that short space of time. Natural Instinct raw she appears only to like beef and tripe so I've order a starter pack from Nutriment plus a "bull pizzle" to chew. She does though assuredly eat 'gourmet terrine' from the good old Co-op so that means her food will be transportable so not reliant on defrosting stinky tripe

Feeding update: Margot will attack only the beef and tripe, (with anything approaching enthusiasm), from Natural Instinct Raw so yesterday I ordered a starter pack from Nutriment, which has arrived just 20 hours after placing the order! Let's hope this appeals to Madam. She absolutely loves Lidl cooked cocktail sausages and she's just "gone nuclear" over a bulls penis , (who knew!?), which was a part of the Nutriment range of delicious treats, along with freshly frozen marrow bones. At risk of repeating myself, this *is* a steep learning curve AND it's a whole other world...

I'm sooooo glad my two aren't fussy eaters, that's one way I'd know for sure they were properly poorly, if they stopped eating! And yes, she's a HMH....High Maintenance Hound! Your first hound and it turns out she's a BARF feeder! We looked into it and gave Alfie some samples but I really couldn't stomach the smell of all that raw meat. And no, I'm not a veggie or anything. so glad you're embracing all the madness that comes with owning a lurcher Kaaren! There really is no understanding why they're different to other dogs until you've experience owning one (but I'd never be without one now, would you?).

Yep, it's a madness alright, Loz!
We've had a fabulously funny day where she's discovered the sheer delight of chomping on, stashing away and remembering EXACTLY where the bulls penis was that she'd hidden.
She's had some full-on argy bargy with a couple of chancer magpies who were threatening her fresh marrowbone which had the effect on her equivalent to catnip to a feline.
She's been deliriously happy.
Play-fighting, gamboling around the garden, hound handbrake-turning on the sodden grass and when she calmed down, grooming me!
Today is Day 17 of our journey together. Margot's character, that had been tamped down by her abandonment and previous experiences, (and I include her spaying and post op recovery, just 15 days ago in that), has begun to emerge and her trust in me is, humbling.
Margot and I are only just setting out on our journey together...
Reading Jenny's moving eulogy to Mims, their close bond, their relationship, their loving constancy in the life of the Family, has been truly uplifting.

Lovely update. It sounds as thought you and Margot are going to have a lovely life together. You may have read us on here referring to 'heart dogs' and that however many dogs you have there is always one extra special one like Mimms. I think Margot will be yours.

That's an astute observation Rowlfsmum However, we are back to square one on the feeding front. She's refused to eat any of the Nutriment Raw. I'm throwing so much food away. When @ Freya's home, and after a long day out where she did eat some treats, she gobbled down both wet and dried food, following Freya's lead as she most definitely doesn't have to be asked twice . In sheer frustration, I gave her some chicken, (in Jalfezi sauce), but washed that off and distributed it through her Nutriment. And guess what, she ate ONLY that cooked chicken. Arrgghhh! I am aware that she might be picking up my negative vibes so after removing the bowl without any fuss, without even looking in her direction, no coaxing, I opened a tin of skinless and boneless sardines in oil, mashed up, disappeared to the loo and I could hear her munching. I did take two goes at this but she did eat. Better than nothing though. So, does she have 'issues' with people being around her when offered food? as I've noticed she'll gently take a bite then run off somewhere private to eat at her leisure. This afternoon I took Margot for her 2nd immunisations. A Nurse injected her, this time in the neck, as opposed to the thigh muscle, by the Vet where she didn't flinch. But today, she screamed out in pain, whimpering, softy howling and crying for a good two minutes afterwards. It's a sound I never want her to emit again. And all the time her eyes were pleading with me to make it better... I'm insisting on Hermann The Vet for next years jabs. Now for the good news! On Friday in the depths of Epping Forest whilst out with Parveen and Freya, I unclipped Margot's lead from her harness and let her run free. She was an absolute darling, doing zoomies, trotting off ahead and then looking back for reassurance. At other times, she's be snuffling about and we would walk past her and she would run to my side without my calling her. Yesterday we walked around Warren Pond and then Connaught Waters, off lead except when approaching a road. Again, impeccable manners and she thoroughly enjoyed herself. She is though, extremely wary of other dogs when off lead so seeing her outright submissive body language, I called her back and re-attched her lead until the *danger* had passed. That offered her the reassurance she needed and once clear, unclipped her, and off she trotted. An absolute dream hound. (Except the feeding malarkey).

Good girl Margot. On the food front maybe YOU should decide what to feed her on and stick to it. She will eat it eventually. Otherwise she will eat something for a while, then refuse just to see what other goodies are on offer!!!

I am so pleased that you can let her off lead - it makes their life so much fun.
As far as food goes, and I may be shouted down about this, but she is in control and shouldn't be. YOu need to stop worrying. If she doesn't eat, don't try and find an alternative, lift the bowl up and then try again later (with the same food). If she is hungry enoough, she will eat. UNless its her teeth or an intolerance, Rowlfsmum is spot on in my opinion. She will NOT starve.
