Happy to hear that Margot is coping well with her op and that all went well. They soon bounce back, but with all your care she will be thoroughly spoiled. More healing vibes for this little lady.

Don't count your chickens yet, Kaaren. When Margot is healed and fully settled you will see her true character!

Thank you Jenny This Day 12 marker was mentioned by Jenny and coincides with her stitches being removed on 5th May. I expect one of us, or both, will be cabin crazy by then I've looked at the Lovejoys site and is there a dry food favourite amongst the hounds. Recommendations welcome, thanks.

Note to self- do not connect dogs with ideal fosters!! Well, as I've said before, if they can't get it right and fail first time, they have to do it again until they DO get it right!! Practice makes perfect.

I've looked at the Lovejoys site and is there a dry food favourite amongst the hounds. Recommendations welcome, thanks. I'm sure everybody will recommend something different. My lot have a mix of Skinners and Autarky dry foods (both reasonably priced) with a splash of gravy made from tinned wet food (Chappie or Butchers tripe mix type) mashed in a little hot water. Best to keep the protein content low (20% or less) or they end up climbing the walls. You may find this useful....... www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/the-dog-food-directory

Must add my congrats to you both too! Mind my manners. We use CP18 from CSJ, as Romi does, with a couple of forkfuls of tinned Butchers Tripe Loaf in jelly (makes a better gravy than the Butchers Tripe Chunks in gravy). We find the amount to feed on all dried foods is much more than you actually need to feed so watch she doesn't start getting porky! As a visual guide you should be able to see the last three ribs, especially on a saluki x. Also added a handful of chunky raw carrot as Greta had a bit of an anal gland issue early on. Plus they both really enjoy crunching on the carrot. www.csjk9.com/

Hope Margot is being a good girl and keeping calm. On the food front we use Burns dry with a bit of burns sachet added for more interest. Burns have an excellent website if you want more info on their products.

Morning all. Thanks for the suggestions on the food front. Much appreciated.Margot doesn't seem keen on the Burns dried mix at all. I didn't think it needed water added? I have stuck to Jenny's suggestions and started her on Chappie but she prefers Butchers. Obviously its early days plus she's had a major operation so I its all been pretty unsettling for her. I have a large amount of treats (that she refuses to acknowledge), and so I'll give those away at some point when we get to meet. We had another restful, non-disturbed sleep and she is happy and relaxed and she's recovering well except for the fact that she's yet to open her bowels since Monday but it's likely her transit time is sluggish due the effects of the GA. I'll mention it, if she hasn't performed by tomorrow, when we go back for a post op check. She appears to have a set routine and luckily I am an early riser. Shes waiting for me in the hall by 6.45am, she ambles out for a snuffle and a tinkle then in she comes for breakfast. I'm feeding her lunch too as she needs to gain weight. Tea @ 5.00pm a mooch around the garden and she puts herself to bed for 7pm. All this is interspersed with *requests* to go sunbathe, by far her favourite activity. I know she must remain calm until nxt Thursday when her sutures are removed and then she can let rip, but she doesn't appear to know what to do with the numerous toys that Jenny kindy offered. I feel she's in need of some lurcher socialisation in order for someone to show her the ropes, (and balls and kongs etc). How sad must her previous life have been? My daughter Leonie flies in to Stansted with a friend next Thursday, staying a week or so before flying bck to Nijmegen and shes the only family member not to have met (and fallen in love with) Margot. Ironic really as she has been working on me, for the last 16 years, using every trick in the book to require me to 'have a dog'. Taking on a rescue lurcher was absolutely my decision, the correct one, and I never did fold under the considerable pressure. Margot is comedy gold at the moment. I still havent heard singing, nor her bark but she does have a rich baritone voice when she vocalises which is more of a 'comment' than a request for anything and considering her size is rather out of keeping. She disappeared this morning, upstairs and I assumed she had gone to see Tom, my oldest son. She was however, sprawled out on my bed. "Smiling"

Sainsburys do their own brand tripe mix tinned food which my lot reckon is just like Butchers only cheaper.

Does my bum look big in this? (Suitical After Surgery Petwear) Thanks to all who recommended this 'doggygrow'. The Buster Inflatable Collar also arrived this afternoon but I don't think she will need it.

Re the dried food...not strictly necessary to add water or make a gravy, but it can help to make it a little more interesting/tempting to eat. We make a slight gravy as it seems to slow their eating down a little. Dry kibble gets inhaled by Alfie in no time at all. We also add some pilchards/sardines in oil a couple of times a week as a treat and because they're good for the skin and coat. Plus of course, Margot will love you forever! Make sure you adjust the portions slightly to allow for any 'extra's. Maybe shop bought treats are not her thing (or you may be unlucky and have a lurcher who's not food orientated - is there such a thing? ). I make a pilchard cake - very easy and quick to do - that can be cut into small cubes and frozen for training, and we steer away from brands like Pedigree for their evening supper treat, preferring natural treats like tripe, puffed jerky, fish twists etc. It's going to be trial and error for a while.

@ Loz She is out for the count in her bed and this is it for the night. It feels like having another child! Margot doesn't seem to be food orientated. At all. She eats slowly, tentatively and will accept cheese or freshly cooked chicken from my hand ever so gently. Impeccable manners. I expected her to be a hungry, gorger because she's so underweight. Dried food, Burns - lamb + rice, doesn't interest her at all so I might try moistening it. I'll give the pilchards or sardines a go. She did have both deboned legs and wings of a freshly cooked chicken for lunch so perhaps she's satisfied and doesn't need treats? I do agree it's going to a case of trial and error. It is so rewarding seeing her happy and relaxed and contented. She looks like a red fox at times with her expressive face and does appear to be cat-like at others as she's been zonked out on my bed most of the afternoon then had a stretch, 'toilet break', wafted in for tea then she's down for the night. Oh, and the schnozz, we have assessed at swivelling @ least 5 degrees, right and left

We order treats from Sea Treats in Grimsby. We get fish sticks which are crunchy and also dried capelin. Rowlf loves them and there is nothing but fish in them. You can order on line. For a lots of dogs dry food can get a bit boring. We add wet dog food in small amounts but you can add anything - sardines etc as Loz said, carrot, a bit of mince. Basically anything to make it more interesting but watch total intake. You have no idea what Margot has been eating so it could all be 'foreign' to her at the moment. Once she is over her op and running around her appetite should improve. Good luck.
