Well done Viviane and David. Good luck in your voyage of discovery. Elmer's still a pup and you've just adopted a teenager. With patience you should see him blossom into a completely normal hound; running, digging, rolling, playing, comic, heartbreaking. Welcome to the club.

An early update on the little chap, received from Viviane today:
Many, many thanks for your reply - it is good to know that there is someone to turn to while we are trying to make little Elmer feel at home, and it is MUCH appreciated! The first night he spent in his new home was not too bad. Obviously everything is very strange and new to him, so we decided to take his bed upstairs with us to make him feel that he was not being left alone, and we did manage to get SOME sleep as well.
First thing David did this early morning: he took Elmer out (still in his pyjamas ) before I came down to prepare breakfast, and Elmer had a big and healthy appetite He enjoyed his breakfast (especially the chicken leftovers). David then was off to his metal detecting friends for his fortnightly Sunday treat and I took Elmer to his FIRST long walk in the country on this beautiful Sunday morning. He was looking around with big wide eyes and sniffing at everywhere other dogs had been before.......... When we returned home to our garden, I was very brave and took off his lead to see how he was going to react, and he was very good and not trying to run away from me. Instead, he just stood there, looking a bit lost, so I slowly began to walk away from him, talking gently to him all the time. He kept looking around, as if he was going to say "Where are all my friends....." He is very timid and feels insecure without the company of your dogs (I realise this) and needs a lot of love, attention and encouragement.
However, all in a sudden he spotted one of the many rabbits who live on the meadow and then he was off to chase him - or at least he was TRYING to chase him because when he realised what he was doing he stopped because I think he was scared of his own courage. This shows he is a real baby and probably thinks : "The world is big, and I am small........... and worried.............."
I gave him a little bit of time, talking to him gently, and slowly walked back towards the house, and little timid Elmer followed me.
At home he had a long drink before following me into the bedroom to log onto the computer and saw your kind e-mail - thanks, Barney!
He is now lying behind me on a rug - and fast asleep........ :>)
Of course, taking him to his forever home has been a BIG adventure for him which meant for this little lad he had to leave the sanctuary of which he was used to, he had to follow two completely strange people into completely strange surroundings, but, above all, he had to leave his friends behind, especially Annie......... I gave little Elmer a cuddle from you and, yes, he will be alright, given a little bit of time........... And I hope that you and your faithful dogs are not missing him too much because I can assure you how grateful I am having found little Prince Elmer in your sanctuary, and he will be loved very much.

A further lovely update from Viviane & David, written on Sunday:
Elmer has made himself at home already. At first he was hiding himself, (together with his chewstick), behind a seat in the lounge, & it was not until this afternoon when he discovered it was much more comfy to sit on the seat, where he can look out of the cottage window.
At the moment he appears to be completely relaxed & very tired, but does not seem to mind his mummy coming to him to give him a gentle stroke.
He is just lying there now resting, because he had three walkies today already. It is lovely to see him so relaxed without any fears at all.
I am sure deep in his heart he can feel how much he is wanted & loved, & I would like to think that he knows that his mummy & daddy have brought him home where he can live in happiness forever........

From Viviane today:
We did notice you had moved Elmer's thread to your "Happy Endings" section and we could not help smiling when we noticed the new photos you had added to it :>)
We were overwhelmed by the lovely responses and comments your members had added to it (so our sincere thanks to all of you!)
With the encouragement of dear uncle Barney I will write about little prince Elmer's progress, however insignificant, because it will show you all how he is progressing over the time. We must not forget he is a poor little puppy and deeply disturbed and needs to forget whatever happened to him in the past.

Elmer's Mum & Dad are currently in the throes of mastering the intricacies of posting on the forum, & have sent us this message from the lovely lad:"Dear uncle Barney and auntie Jenny, dear Annie, Winnie, Erin and Murphy, Thank you ALL so very much for looking after me while I was under your care.
I have settled in really well into my forever home with your dedicated help, and I love where I live now, in the country, because there is sooooooo much to see and sniff for me. During the day, mummy takes me for several long walks, and sometimes we meet other doggies on our walks. I used to be afraid of cars and the noises they make on these little country lanes, but with mummy's help I have overcome these fears now.
My daddy takes me out once more before beddie time, when it is very dark outside, and I still don't like the darkness, because there are no lights where I live now, but daddy takes his torch with him and tells me I am okay.
I am housetrained now, and after my last walkie I am allowed to sleep in mummy's and daddy's bedroom, where I feel very safe. I am sooo much loved and mummy gives me lovely food and sometimes a little treat when I was a good boy. I try very hard to be a good boy all the time, but as I am still a little puppy, I am sometimes naughty as well, but then I don't get a treat ........................... I have put on some weight, weighing now 18 kgs. Mummy loves my coat very much, and when the sun shines it brings out a rich golden glow. My mummy says 'It is the sun kissing you, little prince...'
I love to be in the warm autumn sunshine and watch the butterflies dancing from flower to flower, the bees and bumble bees in the apple orchard as well. Mummy has taught me the word "No" and I must leave these lovely creatures alone in the garden as they 'do so much good,' as mummy says.
I also must not eat any toilet rolls or mummy's patchwork fabrics - that is another "No" for me - what a hard doggy life it is!!!
Mummy says 'you are the sunshine in my life' and 'my heart is healing since you've been around,' because her Deerhound is in pet's heaven now. When we return from our walks, we usually visit Bonny's little grave who is now resting eternally in our little woodland. Mummy says 'all the birds and bees and butterflies in here are looking after Bonny, and Bonny is looking down onto you, little prince.'
And sometimes mummy calls me 'my little acorn,' smiling........ ACORN? A C O R N ?? Am I an A C O R N ? ? ? 'This is a little secret that only your uncle Barney and mummy know about, little prince.....' she says, smiling.
There is a lot I need to learn while I am growing up, but my mummy gives me all the time I need, because I am still scared........ and worried. Mummy helps me to unpack my baggage.......... bit for bit ........... until EVERYTHING is unpacked ............ with time....... love ..................... and patience.......
Mummy's been looking at Charlie's thread and thought what a lovely hound he is. And now, after a few decent meals, a good bath and your care he looks like a real fluffy teddy bear! ! Mummy thinks he is a very special hound, like me, and hopes he will very soon have found his lovely forever home and be loved as much as me, with my mummy and daddy...............
I must go now because after all this talking I have become tired and need my little nappy. Mummy will soon make a start with some little toys for my doggie friends at SLR, as soon as she finds the time.
Meanwhile, please give all my friends a hug from me, I will never forget you, uncle Barney and auntie Jenny, Annie, Winnie, Erin and Murphy, but especially my BEST friend Annie........................... Love from prince Elmer, ("little "acorn"), and mummy and daddy.......... to ALL of you!!!
