Well Digit Kirk is in the hospital The vet gave him a thorough check up and declared him very fit, with lovely teeth. He weighed in at 20 kgs He could not understand why I would not feed him but did not make a fuss. He does jump up to look at worktops and can just reach them even though he is a littlely. He adores his walks and we now know that he is not cat friendly. On the walk last night, they all saw a ginger cat and even though Beauty barked, Digit clearly wanted to chase but only made a sort of muted sound - perhaps trained for silent hunting? Once the cat had gone, he just carried on strutting, head held high ....... He is so 'matter of fact' with everything! Even the vet said how inquisitive he is - interested in everything but just to look and sniff - I have not lost any shoes (yet......) and he does not run off with things or take things to his bed. He does however LOVE toys and playing To take his mind off food last night, I threw a squeaky ball in the sand pit and he just took off, chasing, ducking and diving, throwing it around and he wanted to do this many times and did not lose interest. We then had a game of tug and he and Caspar had a real tug with lots of posturing and Digit is a determined little hound. Caspar let his guard down momentarily and Digit was off taunting Caspar with the toy running in and out. It was such fun! Love Margey

Glad you are enjoyingyour foster Margey, he sounds a bit like Joe, always busy, always investigating! I have a "I Need A Home" slip vest that I will wash and get to you so that Digit? Kirk? can wear it when out walking! What actually is his name now? It's not in his thread title yet! I love his face :-*xxx

[Captain] Kirk did seem to get positive support from SLR members and the little fellow hasn't yet responded to Digit in any meaningful way. I understand that Fosters by tradition name the rescues so I am happy to name him Kirk from today when he comes back to us. Thank you for the offer of the vest. I have just returned from a 2 hour round trip to give the hounds a free run at Gosbecks, Colchester and guess what ........? They just sniffed around a bit, wee'd a lot, couple of poos and then sat down under a tree! I could have achieved that at home! Love Margey

Little Kirk is back with us and had a lovely welcome back from the other 3 - not bad after only one whole day together! He is rather bewildered but otherwise ok. Love Margey

Here is little Captain Kirk enjoying a snooze earlier today. He settles a little more now - for the first few days he was always moving to where I was. We have just returned from his 3 day check up and he is doing well - everything healing nicely. On his 10 day check up, he will have his jabs. He is a real joy - no trouble at all He LOVES his food and in the morning after getting up he sits and looks at you as if to say, well this is what I did in my other home, so where is the food He is always ready for a walk and is really good on the lead, except for determination when he sees a cat or squirrel, but then he is a Lurcher. A little bit of training and he should be fine. He has slept with the pack in their bedroom every night now and not a peep - no little accidents and straight into the garden in the morning. We had grooming this afternoon and he was so good - no-one had bothered with his ears for a while and he let me give them a good first clean. He is a little gem. He is not straight on the furniture like my other 3 and seems to like lying with his back against something, the footstool, bolster pillow etc - might explain why he made for the Lab in the holding kennels. Inquisitive, playful, house trained, healthy, gorgeous ..... what else could you want? We are visiting the safe field at Mistley on Monday and I will see what his early recall is like. He has not 'jumped' at all since he has been with us so probably only uses that when he is really really unhappy and penned in. Love from Margey, Captain Kirk and the Braintree Home for Lurchers

What a difference already! He justs looks really happy..... ;D
I'm glad he's not tried jumping since he's been with you. The lady at the kennels reckoned he only did it because he was desperate for company, and it looks like she was right. Bless him!

Well Kirk has been with us 2 weeks now and it seems like he has been here forever He seems very settled and content. Some things are much clearer now - he may have been used to hunt and is not at all small furry things friendly He also has the deepest bark for a small lad He does not pull so much on the lead now when we go out but he does seek out the squirrels and cats and is very determined ........ At home he loves a romp with me and I get my ears and faced licked, which brings the others over and we have a mad 5 minutes. The heat has prevented much playing otherwise although he really enjoys the visits to the Mistley field and running with all the other dogs. He is a good eater, and always looking for more but from me and not from the other hounds, which is good. He has moved to raw with the other hounds and laps up the pureed fruit and veg, chicken wings, lamb spines, chicken carcasses etc. At first he was a little slow so I kept him indoors, but now he matches the others and they all eat together, in the garden if it is a bone. So, all is well and I will be more than happy to keep little Kirk in our family. My husband feels that I should take the move to 4 hounds a little bit slower as I can be a bit impetuous. We do have a lot of cats around here and squirrels galore, as well as fields with rabbits, so walking Kirk some more is sensible to understand how strong the hunt instinct is and that walking all 4 hounds is safe for us all. I have also booked the safe field twice a week and that should expend some energy! ;D Love Margey

Captain Kirk demonstrated good recall in the safe field yesterday and whenever we get in from a walk, he always rushes back into the house unlike Caspar who would bolt at any opportunity as for him the grass is always greener on the other side! Saluki trait I suspect.
My overall assessment of Kirk is that he is a darling, however he does need to be outside a lot and preferably off lead as much as possible to be happy and content. He is very confident and a natural leader when out walking, forget that he is so much smaller than my other 3, he leads the pack and Caspar is already deferring to him. He spends a lot of time out in our garden in preference to the house and if you have a big garden that he can really run around in, or you can take him out and let him off lead, that would be his dream home. He does need at least one other dog in the home. I have only left him once (with the other dogs) for a period of 3 hours (after good exercise and food) and he was fine. He has never chewed anything in the house and has been almost 100% clean.
I hope to post some more photos shortly. Regards Margey
