lovely pictures barney. looks like you all had a really lovely time x We certainly did Nina, & we established that Gem loves the sea - she never tired of plunging in after heavy seashells that she had no real chance of retrieving because they went straight to the bottom, but would have kept trying all day! ;D

We went to the LL lure coursing at Peterborough on Saturday, but Gem didn't cope well. We thought it was the noise and the people, but some fartwit was letting off fireworks last night ("Remember, remember the the 13th October"??) and the way she reacted suggests that her problem wasn't the excitement of the lure coursing, but the shotguns in the next field that were upsetting her.
Either way, grateful thanks to Fred and Angie for the loan of the space under their car as a bolt hole.
Apart from that, Gem has really settled in and is a fixture if the household, at least until the time comes for her to go home.

aaawww gem is a lovely girl and was really worried on saturday with all the noise and banging, she did at the end of play let me get really close and relaxed in my company for a long belly rub and fuss and then did not want to move, she is going to be like a rose bud as she gains her trust and confidence in you her petals are going to open up into the perfect bloom and be a right cracker, give her a hug from me viv.

Gem went on her first local SLR walk with the gang yesterday at North Weald. She started with her tail between her legs, but after just 5 minutes she was running back and forward with the rest of them. She had a lovely walk. And a well learned rest at the pub. In the front of the queue

Sadly she is Rachel. We had hoped to have a home for Gem all lined up for mid November, but unfortunately it seems not to be. She has done so well. All she needs is for someone to carry on the fantastic work that John and Viv have been doing on her. Okay, she likes to get under the quilt in bed Okay she is ball obsessive when out on walks Okay she likes 300 tummy rubs a day Okay, she cleans her plate in 15 second flat and then wants more but she has blossomed. Gem is an ideal dog for humans, and is okay with laid back dogs that are not in her face. Do you have room in your heart and home for a little Gem.

Sadly Rachel, we are still looking. We had a lovely home offer which seemed just perfect for little Gem. I know that the lovely lady who would love to adopt Gem is watching her thread all the time. I say sadly as the Beryl had to have a hip operation, which went terribly wrong, resulting in her staying in hospital for 3 weeks and having a further two ops which were nearly fatal. She is now home and recovering, but the hip has had to be removed for now and a new attempt at inserting a new hip will take place towards the end of November.
With discussions with the team and with the prospective adopter it has been agreed that we should find Gem another new mummy.
I know this will break this lady's heart, but it would be near on January before she could offer Gem the home that she needs.
We haven't given up looking for an ideal companion for such a lovely lady, but it is not fair to Gem to keep her with John and Viv where she is now quite settled. Gem has come on leaps and bounds and all credit to John and Viv.
This little dog needs to bond with a new mum, probably as an only dog or with a laid back older dog of 8 years or more who will not be in her face.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Beryl, and we wish you a speedy recovery. God bless. xx

Gem continues to do well. We've had the electrician in to update the wiring in the house and she put up very well with all the drilling, routing, sawing, lifting floorboards, etc. She got out the house for a mooch a couple of times when he went to the van and forgot to close the door but came as soon as called. She likes nothing better than retrieving balls and cuddling up. She can be a cheeky madam, though. When we have to put coats on the dogs she sometimes gives one brief bark telling us to get a move on No new photos at present as our camera has a problem and I can't decide what to replace it with.

I'm looking for a Canon Powershot A470. Which said you could get them from Argos for under £50 but the Argos website has them at £89.99.
I've seen them on websites @ £69 or so, but I haven't ordered yet, because we're still trying to sort the house out - do you want 3 crates of children's books? ;D

I would say if you can, up the budget by £20. You can get a lot for under a hundred quid now, camera-wise. Go for a camera with a lithium-ion rechargeable battery rather than one taking AA or AAA standard batteries as the lithium-ion ones charge faster, last longer between charges and are smaller, thus making the camera more portable. Anti-shake (or some of them call it anti-blur) is a definite plus for fast moving objects (like lurchers). Pixel-wise, you're probably looking at between 7 and 9 megapixels in that price range, which is plenty for nice big blow-ups if wanted, or zooming into if you've got "dot-in-the-distance" type pictures. In that area there's a good Casio (similar to mine), a Fuji Finepix, Pentax... a good few at any rate. PC World and Comet are a good source of camera bargains too, as are Amazon and Play.com.
