Posted on behalf of the foster carer of Blue.
Blue is a three-year-old, male Greyhound, who came to the Mayhew via Brent council because he was no longer wanted. He is a sweet-natured, extremely affectionate gentle giant, who knows basic commands and is obedient and responsive. He is good with female dogs, but has not yet been tested with other males. Being an ex-racer he will need to wear a muzzle, when being walked off-lead, his recall is excellent. We do not know whether he is toilet trained or how well he copes with being left alone. He will need one hour of off-lead exercise every day and should be taken to training classes. Blue has a lot of love to give. He is friendly with strangers - young and old - he would happily live with sensible children. This boy craves company and is very playful, loving his toys and teddies. He also loves to curl up next to you for snuggles. He is looking for a new forever home, ideally with someone who has owned a sight hound before. His new guardians will be taking on a twelve-year commitment, which must not be taken lightly. If you're interested in offering Blue a perfect, loving, fully committed, lifetime home please visit The Mayhew Animal Home any Tuesday to Saturday between 1pm - 3.30pm

Hi there
I have a question about Blue and the breed. Having read up about them, I understand it is possible for them to live happily with small dogs and cats, on the assumption that they are trained patiently. Do you believe this is do-able with Blue? I foster cats and have a yorkie. I have been looking for a blue greyhound, on the understanding that I will ensure through training that he will be happy to shere the house with the rest of us!
Your suggestions are most welcome.

Your suggestions are most welcome. E&Z Some greys can live happily with cats - their own cats. And some can't. Most are ok with little dogs in the house. I don't know tho about foster cats as there will be different cats all the time I have a feeling this particular hound needs an experienced home (with greyhounds that is). But I have only ever owned lurchers so I am sure one of the people on this site will know more about greys and cats than I will and will let you know what they think.

Hi, we have a greyhound, a lurcher and a cat. The dogs were introduced to the cat when he was only about 5 weeks old and at a safe distance. The cat came from next door so the owner used to visit with him each week so by the time he came to stay permanently they were quite used to his sounds and smell. For the next few weeks the dogs and cat were only together under strict supervision. Now the dogs adore their little George BUT our lurcher will still chase any neighbourhood cat who dares to wander through our garden. Our greyhound is older now and can't really be bothered! It takes time and patience and not forgetting that a cat can also inflict pretty nasty injuries to dogs

Thanks Laurie. I see the point and it is one I am battling with myself. Few rescue dogs come fully compatible with our home situations, however, and I hope the blue rescue grayhound I m looking for will is around with a bit of work at home!
Mimismum, if you could also let me know a bit more on Blue's potential to live with other animals, I would appreciate it.

Thanks normanandjudy, this is hopeful. The tricky bit with my situation is the rescue cats which are not here to stay. They are in a separate room in the house but I would not want to home a gh that could potentially harm them, especially kittens. Adult cats can hold their own I suspect, but then you do not want war at home or a wounded gh either! Tough one, hopefully we get a bit more of an insight into Blue soon...

Tough one, hopefully we get a bit more of an insight into Blue soon... I must point out that dogs in this section are not in the care of SLR, & we are unable to supply any information other than that provided by the original poster, to whom all enquiries should be directed.
In Blue's case the point of contact is: lisag@mayhewanimalhome.org.uk

I just heard from Mayhew and unfortunately Blue is not suitable for me as he is not cat friendly. Which leads me to the next question: So far, all my queries on greyhounds in different rescues (bar one which is still ongoing) have been turn downs on the basis that I would like the new adoptee to be trainable to accept cats. I am happy to put in the effort, dog training sessions and time. I do not expect them to have lived with cats already not be perfect cat lovers - this would be utopic! I find it hard to keep looking when everyone seems so set to rule me out because of the cats (which I have stressed to everyone, have separate quarters in the house) when I know that it is possible. Playing the devil's advocate I tend to think that it is easier for a rescue to turn me down because of the situation than to risk giving me a chance. I understand that there is little point to a rescue training their greys to accept cats; it is very impractical given the resources and the need, let alone time consuming. I agree it should be this way. No one seems to give them the benefit of the doubt and think maybe -just maybe- it is possible with the right person and will. For me, the point is to rescue a grey and not any other breed or puppy, which is so much more easily rehomable with many families. I cant help but ask myself: am I on a non-runner here?

I dont think you are on a 'non-runner', there are cat friendly greyhounds out there but you may just have to be a bit more patient in finding one. Many of the larger all breed rescues dont rehomed greyhounds or lurchers with people with cats, which is a shame as it stereotypes these dogs into something many of them are not. You are probably best off sticking to the breed specific rescues who know more about these dogs and hopefully one will come up soon for you - there are enough of them out there needing a good home! Have you looked at your local RGT kennels? I've just had a quick look on their site and many of the dogs have a question mark over the cat friendly sign so it may be worth a trip to visit the dogs in kennels and have a chat with the staff there. www.rgtcroftview.co.uk/RGTCroftview/TheDogs.htm

Thanks sloughirescue I will make a point at visiting them over the next few days with my dog and check the reaction of the dogs to her, see what the staff have to say. I had visited their site and there had been a couple of contenders, however seeing the question mark on the cat made me think they will have the same problem. Perhaps I should not assume and go there myself. I am also waiting to hear on my chances with a blue greyhound that is coincidentally coming to Norfolk from Ireland this weekend (I actually saw him on the irish rescue site).
As you say, with a bit of patience persistence and hope, perhaps its possible...

We may have a lovely big lad coming in at the end of this week, next week, but he is brindle and a lurcher, and lives with cats. He is cat, dog, human and child friendly, and at 18 months I hear a couch potato. Does anyone fancy a couch potato, big lovable boy.# I will keep you all posted. J x
