Yay, stiches out this afternoon and not a peep from her. The vet who saw her has a tri-pawd terrier. She said to watch for pressure sores, which was good advice. We think she'll probably be okay as she's so tiny and is nearly always on soft furnishings/dog beds. As expected, everyone in the vets was smitten. We thought we'd ask for their age guestimate, and her opinion is 3 years of age. This seems to fit with her steady behaviour and her little grey chops.

Oh doG, I just said something REEEEEAAAALLY stupid! Andrew's having a Poppy snuggle and stroking her front leg. He commented that she still had her dew claws, then corrected to the singular dew claw. My reply? Oh, has she only got the one then? I don't remember seeing one on the other leg!

Loz and Andy can only foster until the New Year. So let's get this little one rehomed asap. xxx Just wanted to say that things are going so well little Pops is staying here as long as needed. Alfie and Lizzie have both exceeded expectations. X

One of the things I find most inspiring about fostering is how much I learn and how much I thought I knew but didn’t, if that makes sense. You know your dogs’ characters but there’s always slightly different responses to different dogs, and so often they surprise me. It sounds like Poppy’s character works well for Alfie and Lizzie and being with you while she gets through her season will be good for her. Well done to both of you... and the dogs!

You're bang on Christine, the fact that Alfie and Lizzie are doing so well is a lot down to Poppy. I'm going to write up a little summary later, and try to take some outdoor/standing up photos. She spends such a lot of time sleeping on the sofa that might be a challenge but there's more to this little lady than her love of sleep!

Poppy's been with us a whole week now, can you believe it? She really is the most delightful little munchkin, and a pleasure to have around. Here's a bit more information for anyone wondering if they can offer her what she needs. She really is just like any other dog, with a couple of minor considerations/adjustments to take into account. Poppy's very inquisitive, likes to follow the humans/other dogs around to see what they're doing. When she sees it's not very interesting, she'll either lie down and watch us (floor or bed, depending where we are), or she hops back off to one of the sofa's. She does like to sleep next to you, and if Lizzie would allow, I'm pretty sure she'd be snuggling with her as well. She likes to sometimes stand up on her back legs - both for attention and to look at what's on the table/worktops, and as mentioned earlier, has demonstrated the thieving tendencies you'd expect from a lurcher. She'll certainly teach you to put things away, especially food. We're teaching her that this isn't allowed though. That being said, she doesn't seem to be a scrounger as we have our tea (at the table) and she stayed in the kitchen bed quite happily. We're taking her for a short walk alone in the morning and again in the evening, and she really enjoys this, especially the evening walk which is with Alfie & Lizzie. Don't expect her to walk in a straight line, it's more like a sailboat tacking, but I think this is improving as she gets more strength in her muscles. Bear in mind that she's probably not had much exercise for a couple of months. I'm trying a 'shock cord' section of lead to reduce the jerk on her neck as she hops. After her morning walk, we pop her in a crate with a couple of biscuits and her toy for an hour when we walk our two, and she has a short protest whinge then settles nicely. Don't be fooled - she might be missing a leg but I think she sometimes forgets. Last night having a play, she leapt over the foot stool and onto the sofa, landed slightly short but managed to scrabble up. This morning she went in the garden and when Andrew let her off the lead at the door, she raced Lizzie into the dining room at some speed so slippery floors aren't going to be Poppy's friend. Luckily all our tiled flooring is non slip. At night, Poppy sleeps in a crate in our bedroom. If she was allowed, I'm pretty certain she'd rather be sleeping on the bed with us. She can manage getting up stairs no problem, and on one occasion went down a few (after turning around part way up), although we're currently carrying her down as we don't want her falling. Poppy is other dog and child friendly, meeting a little Dachy and a little girl in the vets the other day she enjoyed all the attention from the little girl. She was cat friendly at the kennels, and we're making sure that she doesn't get influenced by our two in that respect so we hope she'll maintain that. We really think a home with respectful children and ideally a (not too boisterous) doggy companion would be ideal for Poppy. She doesn't seem to know any commands, although I managed to get one sit out of her on a little 'training' session yesterday. As she's so small, it's really not been an issue and something that can be worked on in her forever home, maybe with some basic training classes. Food wise, she's eating Country Hunter sachets (2 a day) with a small sprinkling of kibble. She likes cooked chicken (don't they all?). Breakfast is currently in two sittings, first thing she leaves some which we give her later in the morning, It might be because she's in season as this can sometimes affect appetite. She likes puffed jerky, and my dehydrated treats as well as the usual biscuits like gravy bones and markies. Oh yes, and she's happy to let me brush her teeth.

Just a quick update on Poppy.
The last two night's we've let Poppy sleep out of the crate in our bedroom, and she's been a good girl staying in her bed for the duration. She's wearing one of Lizzie's fleece jumpers to stop her getting cold and fidgety. It's huge on her but does the job.
A couple of things we're working through: her interest in her food is a bit variable at the moment. We're unsure if this is lack of appetite related to her season, or if she's just a bit fussy. When offered her breakfast later nearer lunchtime, so far anyway, she's eaten the majority of it. There's certainly no problem with our dehydrated treats.
We've also got to take her out in the garden as soon as she finishes eating, otherwise she does a couple of spins on the door mat by the back door and pees. Again, this could be season related, as she didn't do this for the first 3 days after she arrived (before she came into season) and sometimes this seems more like 'marking' than a proper tank empty.
Although I was working between Christmas/New Year, today's the first day for us both being back at work, so Poppy will be left for 1.5 - 2 hrs. We're going to leave her crated with Lizzie for company, and Alfie in the kitchen, just to be uber careful because of her being in week 2 of her season.
