Brilliant updates Ruth. I love her roman nose. What height to the shoulder would you say she is? Can't wait to see if she is cat friendly as there are a few waiting in the wings to know that one. Just to add that they all seem to be completely bonkers when they first come in. It's the freedom of it all. x Thank you x She's sleeping now but I'll measure her later and test her with the cats too xx

I'm not sure whether Poppy has experienced living in a house in her past. When I turned on the tv this morning her reaction was like she hadn't seen one before. She was reluctant to walk upstairs but that may be because our stairs are wood although she is fine with the wood floors and steps that are downstairs. I think I spoke too soon about her knowing the wee wee command - must've been luck as no such luck today and lots of standing in the garden in the rain waiting for her to do her business. She doesn't do her business on walks, I expect this is likely to do with her lacking in confidence. She is really like a very young puppy, needing to learn all commands and behaviour and lead walking from scratch. She jumps up to give you love, which I'm discouraging by ignoring her and giving lots of love and praise when she's got all feet on the floor. She also tries to get your food whether you're sitting eating it or carrying it about. You do need eyes in the back of your head, which I could have done with while writing this stood in the garden waiting for her to wee when she managed to wee on the coir mat at the back door then when I was hosing it down she had a little chew of the tarpaulin covering summer garden furniture. Her first cat introduction went amazingly well earlier. She seems to speak cat far better than dog - I'll explain more on that in a minute. She was very respectful of the cat's personal space. He walked around slowly and she didn't chase. She sniffed close and he swiped in her direction with a little hiss and she didn't get in his space again. She lay down chilling in the same room as he walked around purring. He is a good judge of dogs and for him to be so relaxed with Poppy is a very good sign I believe. But I should also say he is a dog savvy cat. I wonder if she may have been taken from her mother and litter-mates too soon or perhaps she's just under socialised. She doesn't seem to understand dog body language - mine can lift a lip and growl to say to back out their space and she is still standing on them or trying to them or play bite them under their bodies with her happy wagging tail. One will give a louder bark at her and she seems to get the message then and will happily play with her toys or come to me but she is driving the other a little mad as he's so gentle he doesn't usually tell any dogs off. When I call her away from him to come to me for praise she does come. She really does need gentle handling and positive training methods. She's not been here long enough for me to say how she could be as an only dog but if it is possible she would really benefit from puppy training classes and lots of doggy play dates. If she's homed with another/other dogs, I think younger and playful is the best match for her. The one of mine she's driving a little mad is only 3.5 and he's always been very playful with fosters and other dogs. I think it's frustrating for him as she's not taking his gentle back away requests and he's a very gentle dog. She does need to learn though and I guess he's a lovely teacher for her.

Great update Ruth. Sounds like she is going to be in high demand if she is cat-friendly. Hopefully she'll learn to respect your other hound's space. He does sound like a good gentle teacher.

Great, comprehensive update. It sounds like she is a bit behind in her learning - but it seems she has such a sweet nature that despite this, she will be able to overcome it and be a great dog for someone. Well done for helping her.

Great update. Sounds as if being with a younger trained dog who could teach her would be good.

Great news on the cat front. I found with pups that they would go outside if I had a bedmat dabbed in their wee and left it on the patio and then further away and then onto the grass. Worth a try Ruth x

Worth a try Ruth x Thanks, I didn't explain it clearly as the mat was outside on the decking by the back door so she did go outside. She's been brilliant with her business and no accidents in the house at all xx

Poppy spent time with both our cats today and again she was great. A little more interested than yesterday to sniff them but still respectful. The cats moved around the room slowly and jumped up on a desk, the bed and windowsill. She didn't show any prey drive with them, no barking and just greeting with a waggy tail and sometimes a play bow. She was also more confident on the stairs going up to see them. (please excuse the muddy scratched-up chair) She's still annoying my younger dog getting in his space but on her part it's just being loving and playful and not being able to read his go-away signals. They did have a lovely game of chase around the garden together this afternoon which looked lots of fun and was very muddy with the rain we've had. I may have been presumptuous to say she needs a younger more playful dog to live with and perhaps if the dog was older and/or less playful they'd both just need time to adjust. Hopefully being here she will learn to read dog body language better. I guess it's really too early to say either way. Poppy was better today walking on lead when I took her out on her own. Nearly no jumping, no lead chewing and some loose lead walking/sniffing. A tiny amount of walking to heal for treats but she's so interested in smelling everything, she's mostly too distracted. So probably we should practice that in the house and garden. We passed noisy building works when out and she was fine. But I forgot to mention on the busy road by the vet yesterday she walked with her tail between her legs as she was quite scared by the road. Round here it's quiet and she's very happy walking. She had a lovely greeting for my neighbour and the builders up the road. She's so loving and friendly. She was also very loving to my friend who came over today who had cuddled her in the backseat when we collected her on Sunday. She was so excited to see him again when he came in the door, it was lovely. She loves playing with toys. This morning she emptied the toy box then lay with all the toys surrounding her and one at a time picked each up and gave it a chew and/or toss in the air. It was so sweet to watch her. We've been doing little training sessions teaching her sit and down with the help of my other dogs. Progress is slow as she thinks the best way to get the treats I'm holding is to jump at me. When she knows sit and stay it's going to be much easier to teach her not to try to steal whatever I'm eating. She hasn't managed to get anything yet but she does try hard. She is learning off, which I tell her when she jumps on the garden furniture covered in tarpaulin outside but I think because she likes the praise when she gets off, she jumps back on again so she can get more praise for getting off. She's so so sweet! I need to distract her the first time she gets off so she doesn't get straight back on it. I thought maybe she didn't know the wee wee command yesterday, but today she's wee'd on command. Her stomach still isn't settled although she's being fed chicken and rice and today I mixed in some special stomach settling tinned food from the vet. Her first poo was better formed but later became loose.

Poppy is coming on brilliantly. She's doing really well learning sit and down, and working on stay and give paw. She's annoying my younger dog less, and as well as games of chase around the garden, they snuggled up together on the sofa today. She is such a sweet, happy, loving and clever pup.

Poppy continues to be a pleasure to foster. She's so sweet and loving and so clever too. She's great with the cats, though for safety she's still kept on lead with them. She's playing and snuggling up with both my dogs and annoying the younger one less every day. She's full of beans and loves sprinting round the garden chasing my dogs and being chased - though she's mostly the chaser and not the chasee. She loves training and all the praise that comes with it. She's mastered sit, down, paw and roll over in the week she's been here. She's only had one accident in the house all week and that was my fault forgetting to let her out straight after returning from a walk as she doesn't yet do her wees outside but saves them for our garden. She's being fed her puppy kibble as training treats only for now. I did introduce the kibble into her boiled chicken and rice diet last week but her poos became loose again so she's back solidly on the chicken and rice 4-5 times a day. Now her poos are better, I'm hoping the vets will start her vaccinations early this week. We're still working on lead walking as out and about she's so interested in smells, she does tend to pull and zig-zag, though she walks better when walking alongside another dog. She's been great with my friends' dogs we've walked with and is super excited to see other dogs outside as well as people and star jumps in the air, which we're also working on. She's so affectionate and loving and loves seeing visiting friends and talking to my neighbours when out and about.
