Lizzie's been going off lead all week. She's pretty full on and pushy in her attempts to get Alfie to run with her, so we're meeting up with Keith this afternoon to see if she's the same with Hugo (who likes to play/run) or if it's just Alfie she treats like that. Alfie, Greta and Lizzie did an amazing run together yesterday, although we did have our hearts in our mouths for a few minutes all was fine when we finally caught up with them. She definitely needs the muzzle off lead as she tried to grab Alfie's back as he sprinted past her. In the house, she's settled brilliantly into our routine, goes to bed when asked, sits for her dinner and, oh yes....sets everyone off in a chorus of barking anytime someone knocks on the door. Luckily we don't have many callers! When told to be quiet, she continues to foof and blow out her cheeks, which is quite funny. I've also been carefully brushing Lizzie's teeth daily, which is a must do job. The vet said that she will inevitably need further dental work, probably in a couple of years time due to the condition of her teeth/gums. At her check up on Tuesday, I was shown the large pocket in the gum on her big back tooth which was left after the dental. I'm hoping that will close up if I keep brushing. A few more pics of lovely Lizzie. Sharing the sofa with Alfie. In the garden.

Met up with Loz and Andy with Lizzie. We walked around the Heath with just the three dogs. Lizzie left Lorna alone completely, and just mooched along, sometimes on her own, sometimes with Hugo. A nice peaceful walk, no dramas! Although Lizzie looks skinny in the photos she has put on a bit of weight, and she always was a bit of a slim saluki! She seemed much happier now her teeth have been sorted, and she definitely knew me. Moochin'

Thanks for the walk Keith! Yes, she definitely was much more excited to see you this time. I think last time she was a bit overwhelmed with everything. Lizzie's interaction with Hugo was quite different to what she does with Alfie (and not what I expected given he usually likes to play). Just one attempt with a play bow and giddy little run to try and get Hugo to run with her, but he wasn't having it and just stood there, so she went off mooching. Not a single bark, nothing! I need to do some work with her 'play' around Alfie this week. Here's my token photo from the walk. Lizzie, Lorna and Hugo inspecting the big rhodie bush.

Great updates Loz. She is certainly a really pretty girl and her character sounds really nice. It's always interesting to see how different foster dogs interact with the pack and how your own dogs behave slightly different depending on the character of the foster dog. It's an interesting lesson in how dogs read the body language of other dogs so easily... a language we humans don't tend to see anywhere near as clearly.

I was thinking its to do with vibes. Hugo obviously gives off different vibes to Alfie. Even Rowlf has run happily with Hugo til he gets overexcited but Rowlf and Alfie wouldn't work. I guess it's like humans, not everyone gets along. Lorna must give 'don't mess with me' vibes as Rowlf ignores her too! Lizzie looks to be a good steady dog.

Lizzie's lovely in the house, just wants to be my shadow, but okay to be left if needed. I don't know if 'steady' is the right word, she's quite a complex little thing, and we're still trying to assess her with other dogs when we're out and about, and managing greetings. She and Alfie had an amazing zoomie across the heath this morning, it was a joy to see as very few dogs will run with Alfie.

So, a little plug for Lizzie. We think Lizzie would be happier as an only dog, with someone around most of the time, although we wouldn't rule out a calm, steady, easy going hound companion as she's an alpha dog. She likes to know where her humans are, and be near them, especially on the sofa. I think she'd like to come up on your bed too. She can be left - the most we've done so far is 3.5 hours with the radio on. We've never heard any noise, and nothing's been disturbed on our return. She's learnt our routine quickly - understands being sent to bed, sit and watch before eating. She eats well with good quality food. Excellent on lead, she sticks close to you and doesn't pull. Quietly keen when she sees a cat, but easily managed. She gets excited when it's time for a walk, and when we come home, but will sit when told to, so this helps with that. Good off lead, doesn't go too far and recalls well. She's not a treat taker. Needs to be muzzled as she doesn't like dogs in her face and will tell off a rude dog. She'd also grab at any running partner in excitement as per any lurcher. Travels well in the boot or in a harness on the back seat. She will need her human to keep up the daily tooth brushing to look after her remaining teeth, which most probably will need further veterinary care in the future. Lizzie really is a lovely little dog to have around, if we could keep her, we would. Come on...somebody out there needs this little lady in their lives.
