Toby is proving too much for his owners, as he dashes madly round the rooms and needs more exercise than they thought a Lurcher would. He gets lead walks twice a day but it is not enough. Toby has been mouthing the children. Christine went over to do an assessment of this little lad and this is what she had to say - ................................................................................................... What I would say about this little boy is that he is really friendly, but over-enthusiastic and needs some work to teach him how to behave. He needs someone who can spend time training him and another dog who will tolerate his exuberance and tell him off in the doggy way that works so much better than the methods we humans have to use. He also needs to be in a home without young children, as they just add to his excitement. He’s having to spend time shut away because of his very lively behaviour and needs to be able to burn off some of that energy. The present owners are, unfortunately, not able to give him the type of environment he needs to learn how to play and are finding it really hard to cope with him. Given time and the right environment he will be a lovely dog, he just needs training, understanding and time. ................................................................................................... Here are few piccies of Toby that Christine has taken on her visit. He did need to be calmed down for the photos. Video to follow shortly.

Toby is a lovely dog, he just doesn't know how to behave. He's very enthusiastic in his greetings and finds it difficult to calm down. There must be someone out there who wants to turn this little boy around and give him the forever home he needs - with the training and exercise he needs he would be a happy, loving and calmer little dog. I'm happy to explain more about what he needs to anyone who is interested inToby.

He is rather sweet. We fostered a lurcher boy with similar issues. Once we could let him off lead for a good run and he learnt a few boundaries with my crew he turned into a lovely boy, homed with an active family, older children lots of outdoor fun.

I hope that someone can see what a lovely little boy he is inside and give him the chance to learn the boundaries

I hope so too. Dexter (looks very similar) became easier to cope with indoors just as soon as we were able to let him have his freedom each day. We were lucky enough to find a paddock to start with and now he goes off lead mostly now other than when hazards (squirrels/rabbits/playmates) appear. Then he sleeps for hours! Not sure if this is true of all lurchers or Saluki types particularly, but Dexter would be like a pressure cooker waiting to explode if he didn't get those precious minutes to let off steam.
What a difficult choice for the family, especially when they have children, but very noble of them to think of Toby first and do hope he finds a lovely home where he can do controlled explosions! The reward of having a (large) sofa-hot-water-bottle and a big cold, wet hooter stuffed in the earhole makes the time and effort spent on the exercise and training so worthwhile. Easy for me to say, I am not coping with a lurcher AND children!

His description would probably fit most young lurchers, particularly if they did not get adequate exercise! Good luck, Toby.

I met up with Toby at the park yesterday so that I could see how he is outside his normal territory. He was very different from the bouncy over-excited dog I met at his home. He's really sweet and desperate to play with other dogs. When I got Alice out to meet him they both wanted to play - no photos I'm afraid because I was too busy trying to stop Alice getting too excited. It was really nice to see what a lovely character this little man has.
Here's a video of Toby meeting Comet.... the squeaking is Comet, wanting to run and play!

Love the video and Toby could be indeed be Dexter's younger twin! Looks gorgeous, but then I would say that, wouldn't I. Alice is a daintier lady version and is sooooooo beautiful.

Just back from picking up Toby and meeting Maxine and Andy who are going to foster this little man. He was very excited to see me, but he loves people so that was no surprise. He was a bit distressed in the car as I drove over to Bramshill but that was to be expected. We went for a short walk while waiting for Max and Andy to arrive and he walked very well on the lead despite all the fascinating smells around. We met 3 unruly dogs that scared Toby a bit but he copied with it well. He was really happy to meet Max and Andy and made a real fuss of them. He's a very friendly little boy but clearly anxious and unsure a lot of the time which is why he's so hyper. But watching Max with him was wonderful as she was a real calming influence.... sorry Andy but I think Toby has already decided that Max is the leader of his pack! He's going on a very special journey to a new and happy life thanks to the lovely Maxine and Andy. I'm so grateful to them for stepping up and offering to foster Toby as I was worried about his future. They are just what he needs to sort out his anxieties and over-excitement and I've no doubt Dexter and Charley are going to show him the ropes. Here he is in the back of my car about to start the journey... you can see he's anxious We took him for a short walk together and he got anxious when Max was left behind and kept looking back to see where she was. As you can see, he's already concerned about where she is At the end of the walk and off to his new foster home Looking forward to seeing the photos of Toby with Dexter and Charley and hearing how his story develops. Huge thanks to Maxine and Andy for taking him!!! ... and finally a short video to show what a lovely calming influence Maxine is.
