9 year old Joe came under our wing as an emergency case, having been badly neglected by his owner, who, whilst she was undoubtedly very attached to him, was regrettably incapable of looking after him properly.
Joe was patently very undernourished & was a mere bag of bones. His mouth was in an appalling state, & he required dental surgery to remove most of his teeth. His nails had not received any attention for goodness knows how long, & were curling under his paws.
The vet established that Joe had a heart murmur & a kidney condition, both of which will require ongoing treatment & monitoring.
Thanks to the outstanding generosity of SLR members we were able to fund Joe’s surgery, tests & medication whilst he was in our direct care, as well as continuing to contribute towards his necessary ongoing treatment.
Joe now lives happily in Hampshire with his lovely adoptive Mum Jacki, who provides all the love, comfort, care & attention that such a distinguished elderly gent could possibly wish for.

Sorry I haven't kept you up to date with Joe's progress but the poor lad has been very sick and I haven't really known what to tell you - good news one minute, bad, very bad, the next. However, this morning he perked up, stood up, had a drink of water and said he wouldn't mind a small piece of spam. Of course I wept all over him, which he bravely endured. We are not out of the woods yet by any means but he has eaten, and even been out for a couple of minutes up the lane, so the outlook is so much better than it has been for the last few days. I've been so desperate to get some food down him that if he'd said a human sacrifice was all he could face I would have come up with one. So fingers crossed. Jacki

I'm in tears now I'm so sorry you are going through this so soon after taking him on Jacki, but I know he couldn't have a better mum beside him.

Red letter day - Joe has downed 3 meals! It’s so long since he’s downed enough food in a day to constitute one good meal that the flags are flying. Neighbours have been calling round on a daily basis with new foods to try, that a vet or an expert or a friend has recommended, and it may be that one of those has finally triggered off his appetite. Or he may have finally decided that anorexia has gone out of fashion. Or perhaps the medication is finally taking full effect. Anyway, let’s just hope it’s the start of something good.
One thing he hasn’t lost while on hunger strike is his love of walks and he’s still insisting on at least four a day. He does a bit of scampering, but it’s mainly snouting and sniffing in the hedges and fields. He loves to meet other dogs when we’re out, probably because he’s the only one at home, and his friendly low key approach means he makes a lot of friends. However, if faced with unwanted doggy attention, whether hostile or just over-friendly, he deals with it well, using one of two major tactics.
The first one is to assume a sedate elder statesman attitude, gaze focused on the far distance, weighty matters evidently on his mind, oblivious to all around him. This total lack of reaction so disconcerts the other dogs that they tend to wander off, pretending they didn’t want to talk to him anyway.
The second tactic is even more impressive. He launches forth a pee of such astounding duration that other dogs stand back aghast. On and on he pees, and eventually their wonder turns to admiration as it becomes clear he has some kind of superpower: humans have Superman and Batwoman and the like – what do we care, we now have our own Peedog. On and on and on he pees and eventually they disperse – must be home in time for tea. I don’t know of one local dog that has actually managed to stay awake, let alone pay attention, for the entire duration of one of Joe’s pees from start to finish.
My late much lamented lurcher, Boney Maroney, had her own way of dealing with tricky situations - she would lean forward confidentially and mutter quietly in their ear. It had much the same effect as Joe's "elder statesman" ploy. It would be interesting to learn what diversionary tactics other dogs use.
Thanks again to all of you for your support. I hope to be back in a few days with news that Joe has put on weight!!

Sounds good! He's a character, by the sound of it, of the best kind. Long may the improvement continue! "Diversionary tactics"? What they? Have you seen my avatar? ;D

So glad to hear the lovely gent is on the mend. Jacki, you do make me laugh. You have a wonderful way with words. Our new lad Archie pees forever and ever as well. He even does a little hop on the leg he is standing on to get more comfy half way through ;D Our 2 don't seem to understand low key greetings yet (work in progress!) Keep on getting better Joe

Great to hear Joe's found his appetite at last.
Our new adoptee, Snoopy, also could pee for England. Bran would stop at every tree, telephone pole, lampost etc, if I would let him, when we are out, but Snoopy does one humungous pee and that is it. Really embarrassing though when you are on the path and on a hill..... ;D

As the wee gathers momentum down the hill you probably, like me, have visions of hideous headlines like “HAMPSHIRE VILLAGE WIPED OUT BY SHOCK TSUNAMI”.

happy hammer Whippets are bright, playful, exuberant, noble, graceful, loyal, affectionate, independent, and they enjoy playing practical jokes. They are, at heart, basically elves. Everybody claims that their favorite breed is intelligent and good with children (which, I suppose, means that the dog will refrain from dining upon them). Whippets are very bright, which helps a great deal in training them, but this can be offset by their independent nature: their desire to do your bidding isn't as great as in working breeds, for example. Motivation can usually be provided in the form of something edible. Yes, Whippets are good with children, although not so good as to be able to spare you the expense of baby-sitters. People frequently misjudge Whippets on the basis of their appearence. For example, some think that Whippets will be cold and aloof, due to their aristocratic bearing. On the contrary, they are are loving and demonstrative. I have also heard concerns that Whippets might be high-strung and skittish, probably a result of seeing their quick reflexes, and the boundless enthusiasm with which they greet you at the door. I have had a dog or two that didn't care for thunder or fireworks, but truly neurotic Whippets are rare. This is not to say that Whippets are not excitable: they will zip about when their human comes home after a day's work (or when feeding time comes around) but within minutes they settle back into their normal state, which is asleep on something soft. keithx

Joe passed away in the arms of his mum Jacki. Joe had a grade 5/6 heart murmur when Jacki adopted him and it was just a question of time as to when and how long. He had one hell of a love in his forever mum and the best few months of his entire life. Joe will remain in all of our hearts and the reason why we rescue. God bless you little man. God keep you and love you just as you were loved here on earth. xxxx

Yes it is and hurts every day thinking about her but i always say you have to remember the good times and thats what i try to do every day
