I finally invited Bax to play with me. But he had to play my game. He is very clever and learned very quickly how to get his toy off the fence. Do you want to go and play now Bax I'll go and get a toy from your bag - stay there Sit and wait then Forgot to take a photo of him waiting for the toy to be put in the fence. Then fetch, and he worked it out to pull it off in 3 seconds, again and again. He does like to do tasks.

I think I've said this before....but wouldn't Baxter make a fabulous 'search and rescue' dog? Or an agility dog?

He is such a clever boy and looks like he needs the mental challenge, and a Boss Women

Baxter prefers the company of men. No, I don't think Agility at this time would be any good for him, just rushes the adrenelin buzz, but he does like working out things, so a mental challenge. We have tried search and rescue. He is being an absolute toe the line poppet. Yep, strong women do it for him

I had one incident today where Milo thought he heard someone at the door so started them all off barking. Baxter then tried to get to the door before me and he and Milo were getting nasty. I rushed at Baxter lunging my leg bent into him and shouted for him to shut up. He still barked and snarled at me, and it does look menacing if you were not used to juvenile delinquents. I then lunged and chased at him and told him to stay in the kitchen and shut the door on him. No-one at the flipping door. I then grabbed the cat scarer and gave a blast on it, and he immediately shut up and actually jumped onto the stairs and cowered there. He doesn't like the noise of the cat scarer at all. He came up to try and make up with me but I made him sit and give paws and go down and stay. I then gave it a few minutes and told him to come and gave him a ruffle on the head and neck and told him to go lie down. He seems to have got into the habit of being guard dog of the door, and he has to get out of this, not be allowed anywhere near greeting people entering. He had a lovely walk this evening with Tag and Milo and even ignored a bicycle. Michael says that he has not liked a motorbike passing on the road nearby. I wonder if he has been chased or knocked by a motorbike when he was younger. No problem with changing the bin bag in the kitchen cupboard and bin.

Ade and Nikki have been doing really well, but there was an incident yesterday when Ade had given Baxter a stuffed bone as a treat on their return from their weekend break. Baxter took that as his possession and guarded it quite rightly. He had seen Tag do similarly here at the weekend and Tag told him off for going near his chew. We removed all chews and no problems. But Baxter took exception to Nikki's foot near his chew and mouthed her really hard to leave it. Ade stepped in and removed the chew with the voice of doom. But Ade then wanted to see if he could do it again, which he could. So he gave it back to Baxter. Baxter was by now in his crate with the Bone and Ade reached in with his hand and Baxter was having none of that and chomped down on Ade's hand. Ade rang me last night to inform me of what had happened, and we both reflected that perhaps it wasn't a good idea to give Baxter such a nice possession and then try to extract it from his domain. Ade is fine, and I am sure he will post shortly, and Baxter was very confused about the incident and remorseful. Both Ade and I agree that this is not out and out aggression, but a need to retain his possession and Baxter being Baxter, his mouth always goes first.

Hi all, Just a quick update as I'm watching the world cup! Baxter has behaved very well since Tuesday so hopefully that was just a case of us learning about how he reacts to certain situations & which ones need more work. We took him to his usual field this morning, here's a quick clip of him playing football, his game of choice. He has no stamina whatsoever & after about 10 minutes of this he always walks to the shaded part of that field & collapses into a heap as you'll see: Further updates soon! Ade

Bax has been exceptionally well behaved for the last few days & is still making great progress. For example, when we first had him he'd come & bark loudly in your face when he wanted.....anything - leaving you to try to work out what it was. This has changed now. If he want's to go outside i.e. for the bathroom he'll come & bark softly. If he wants to play he'll come up with a toy & sometimes bark softly (& hopefully). He does still bark when someone knocks on the door but we've started working on that, i.e. taking in in turns to "pretend" to go out then come back shortly after etc etc in order that we can get him more used to people coming & going & also work on stopping him getting exited when they do. He doesn't particuarly like being crated if we're going out (he's perfectly happy in there if we're not going out & often goes there for a nap) but this is also showing signs of progress & I think this is going to be OK. He's taken to licking me at every opportuntity but never licks Nikki! I think this is probably because I am "normal" flavoured wheras Nikki is various stuff from L'occitane or Clarins ;D Busy day today, off to the fields this morning for football as usual, then went shopping for various bits NOT including cat food: "are those tiny cats?"Got a few ooohs from the girls at the pet store:Later on a quick visit to Nikki's mum:Tired out from one chew! Then later that evening, back home, one of his favourite pastimes:At some point this week we aim to arrange a visit to Anil to cover a few things (repeat prescription & a toe-nail cut...) but also possibly for further tests & perhaps a scan as part of the ongoing work to see if there is any physical problem that needs to be addressed. As I type he's asleep down the side of the bed. Always Nikki's side, never mine. Mind you, she does keep a few cuddly toys there!

Bax has had his visit with Anil. No outward signs of anything like jaundice or any other malady. Anil has done a fresh blood test & should have the results tomorrow-ish.
He also gave Bax a pedicure (lol, he didn't like that much) & weighed him (23Kg).
Here's something very interesting; there were two other HUGE dogs in the waiting room. I was expecting a little drama but bax was as cool as a cucumber, trotting up & sniffing very politely & friendly & completely relaxed.
This is the first time I've seen bax meet other dogs INDOORs. I wonder if that was the key.

He's also been in the Vets, and sat 3 feet from a cat on a lap And just tilted his head and looked.

It's interesting. We're likely to be visiting friends soon who have a female staffie, not much more than a puppy (the one Alfie played with in fact). We'll introduce them indoors & see how it is.
Forgot to mention we also got a new prescription of Advocate for Baxter.

He did, though, regularly kick off at other dogs whenever we were in PAH.
