Little Alfie has been waiting to come into us. He is, hopefully, coming into SLR and straight to a potential foster/fail. Alfie is a lovely little 19" at the shoulder Pad lookalike. Piccies will be available shortly.    |

When we met Alfie last week we both fell in love with him. He is a fantastic family pet and will be happy in a home either with or without doggie company. He is a very loving companion and it is very sad he has to be re-homed as his current owners are very attached to him. He has eyes to die for and was perfectly behaved when we visited - sitting and coming to his name on cue. A lovely little lad who will be a perfect addition to someone's sofa.

I think he's 6 years old. He's slightly on the podgy side at the mo, hard to feel his ribs. Likes his treats, but a few good walks should trim him up a bit. He will make someone a lovely family pet. |

I picked Alfie up yesterday and he has settled in extremely well. We had a lovely walk on Wimbledon Common this morning, perfect off the lead, always making sure he is in sight of you. We met loads of different dogs, he was happy with those who came up to have a sniff and with others he just ignored. In other words he was perfect! His last owners who loved him very much were worried about his behaviour with their grandchildren and I can see why. Luckily my children are very used to grumpy lurchers and know when to back off and Alfie is very, very grumpy when he feels his space is being invaded. He decided (with my daughter's connivance) to sleep in her room last night and then got very possessive and very growly, showing his teeth, when I tried to  my daughter goodnight. The trouble is that when he is playing he loves his cuddles and strokes with the children and I would trust him entirely, but you only ever know when he doesn't want any attention with a low growl and many children wouldn't know to back off. Although I really don't think he would bite. I will let you know how it goes for this gorgeous boy. |

Hi Careycombe.  I'm so pleased to hear he is with you already and is getting on ok. I didn't get the impression that he's a biter, he just needs to know what is acceptable behaviour and what's not. It sounds as if your family will be able to give him the guidelines he needs and I hope you will all be very happy together. ;D |

Blimey, that was quick!! Hi Careycombe, glad to hear Alfie is settling in well and getting to know the boundaries. It sounds like he needs some understanding from children around him as he may be as unpredictable as they can be. If both know how to respect each other and spot the warning signs there should not be any probs whatsoever. Alfie is just adorable and I am sure will be very happy with you and your family.

Well, everything was going so well. If I had written this update yesterday, I would have said Alfie has stolen our hearts, he is beginning to trust us and the growling seems to be getting less. He is even starting to play with my big girl. However, this morning, while chasing a squirrell, he managed to do a classic lurcher injury and impale himself on a stick in his stomach. Poor darling was so traumatised he didn't growl at all when we all picked him up to take him to the car - a walk of a mile. He is now in the vet and I will let you know how he is. I have some photos, from before the injury that I will try to upload.

Well, Alfie with all his mishaps, vets visits and grumpy growling has totally stolen our hearts and I'm afraid my children have said they will run away if we give Alfie up so that's it! He is divine and we are lucky to have him. I'm not sure Venus (my deerhound) is quite so happy but she is growing, if not fond, resigned to the fact that she has to share the house with a friend - although she has still has control of our bed. I will post some photos of him in his new home very soon.
