Sally, how about meeting up tomorrow (preferably here) and going for a walk with this lovely girlie.... There is a very secure field just round the corner from me so that we can assess her off lead ..... just a thought Also, please remember to keep her away from Sid to start with, preferably behind a child gate.... dont want Sid attacking her just yet let them meet carefully Good luck and i am very very very jealous. Sorry folks - has been a busy day! Yesterday we did not have a dog and today we have! She travelled well after initial trepidation and has been a sweetie ever since. She has not met Sid the cat yet although they have sen each other through a frosted glass door - will leave the intro. for a day or so. She is an absolute sweetie and very well behaved. Let's see what the night brings...
Kate it would be great to go for a walk - thank you. My number is 01962 864087. we can come out to Romsey easily. Give us a ring to let us know when and where! Hopefully see you tomorrow.

Day 2 with the little lady and all going well. She was a bit unsettled at the start of the night but I only had to sleep on the sofa for a few hours and she settled on her bed and only got up at 7.30am so we got some sleep! We had a lovely walk this morning - she was keen to get out but did not pull on the lead. She has been weeing in the house on newspaper despite having been taken out several times yesterday but got her act together with 'toileting' in the garden this morning. She was so pleased with herself she leapt in the air and torn around the garden after her performance! We met up with Kate (Indysmum) this afternoon and tried her off lead. She was very good and had a bit of a play with Indy. She is willing but does not quite know what to do with other dogs in terms of play but that did not stop them tearing around like mad things for a good five minutes. Thanks Kate for your time, advice and supportive comments. We have a few piccies which we will try to upload to one of the threads - I think Kate has set one up in general chat so we will update on that thread from now on.
Only problem is that we still do not have a name for her. She has been called 'Lady' for the past 10 weeks by the lady she was with. Whilst she has behaved like a perfect lady since she has been with us we think her character will suggest something a bit more colourful so will wait to see how her nature unfolds.
Whistle training started today with Kate and with Rolf away for the week, I have until Friday to get her trained!!
Thanks to Rebecca, Kate, Caroline and Jenny for setting us up with such a lovely 'foster' dog - I get the feeling she might be staying as long as Sid the cat accepts her (signs are looking positive so far but we will take it slowly for both their sakes!).
Cheers,
Sally

We are so delighted to have been asked to 'foster' Rosie and after two weeks just knew we could not part with her. She is a far more confident dog than two weeks ago and it has been an emotional roller-coaster for all of us! As well as being separated from her doggie companion, she got landed in a house with a hissing cat and no-one to snuggle up with so a couple of nights on the sofa with her were called for and she is fine now.
She managed to get out of her SLR collar twice in the first two days, and squeeze through minute holes in the hedge, so met the neighbours very early on. We now have 6' high mesh fencing in front of the hedge and anywhere else she might find an outlet - it feels like Colditz! Thanks Kate for the Martindale collar - no successful escape attempts since she has been wearing it.
Since we have been letting her off lead she has tried less to escape, but just wants to go out for walks ALL the time. I lost half a stone in the first week we had her through excessive walking, being too exhausted to eat and nervous energy. If she can hep me keep this up she will be worth my weight in gym fees. She has had a couple of lovely walks with other SLR folk and their dogs and is getting to know one or two local dogs and we are now going to start the search for a companion for her.
She is really starting to show her colours now and just wants to play and run. Unfortunately, she came to us with a bit of an upset tum, which we initiallly put down to nerves, but developed a full-blown tummy bug after her first week, which was not nice for any of us. Having got over that she then managed to cut her foot when bounding through some long grass yesterday and felt very sorry for herself for about half an hour then wanted to go out again with foot still bleeding! Thanks for the tip about the self-sticking bandage Jenny - it is doing a fab job and has withstood the walk we had this morning.
Off the the vets this afternoon for her vaccinations then hopefully we can settle down as a happy SLR family and not have any more shocks, frights, worries or wee on the carpet. It certainly has not been a boring two weeks - something new has happened every day and although there might have been some steps back, the steps forward have been great to watch and ertainly outweigh any negatives.
The one thing I am still a bit unsure about is feeding, and I would love the advice of other SLR folk. She does not have a great appetite and has even been a bit sniffy about fish and chicken on a couple of occasions. We have bought all kinds of dog food - wet, dry, tinned, from the vets, special meat stuff from SCATS and the only thing she will eat more than once are the cats biscuits (which he is none too chuffed about). I have tried feeding her early, late, after a walk, before she goes out but nothing seems to have made a difference. I want to set a routine, so can you let me know what your dog(s) eat and when they have it? This could be an interesting sociological study into dogs and their owners lives!
I look forward to any suggestions on things to get her taste buds going.
Sally x

Hi Sally, firstly fantasic news that you're 'failing' in your fostering role and Rosie is there to stay!! Another walk is definitely a must for us all again soon. Are you going to the Hayling Island on this weekend? I feed my two older boys on Burgess greyhound & lurcher food along with raw food. They have a small amount of the kibble every morning about 8am and then they either have the dried food or some raw mixed with dried in the evening - alway at least an hour after their walk. I normally walk them, then we have our dinner and then I'll feed them. Baby Dex is still on puppy food 4 times a day at the moment and I don't think we'll have any issue with him as he'd eat all day long if we let him - if anyone else saw him eat they'd think we were starving him as he just can't get it down his neck quick enough Vinnie always used to be a fussy eater and would only really eat if he was really hungry, you could leave food out all day and he'd only touch it in the evening and sometimes only if you were in the room with him! Since getting Dylan we don't have a problem at all, probably because he realises that if he doesn't eat his food then Dylan will. Vinnie would always eat if I hand fed him, but obviously this was not something I wanted to encourage so what I used to do was handle all this food (not great with wet food) so that he could smell me and for whatever reason this seemed to work. I think I was his comfort blanket for about 6 months after we got him and all the time he could see me/smell me he was relaxed - when I wasn't about he was unsure about doing things, including eating. He still now looks to me for encouragement (6 years on) if he's unsure about things and almost waits for the go ahead! Good luck with the feeding, I'm sure she'll settle soon and fall into a routine.
