Well, Shadow has been with us for just over a week now and it feels like he has been with us for ages. He has settled in beautifully and is having a great time being loved to bits by my 2 daughters and running around with all his new doggie friends on his walks. He loves to play pull and having play fights on the floor with Paul. Our terrier, Daisy is slowly warming to him now she has established who is top dog! After a few days of trial and error we finally found a dog food Shadow likes to eat and he now seems to have fully found his appetite! I think he was just too anxious to eat properly when he first got here. We attempted to go to the vets on Tuesday but Shadow flatly refused to get in the car! I guess every time he has been in a car lately he has been taken to a new home so I can understand his fear. Fortunately there is another vets within a short walk of where we live so I registered him there and we visited him on Thurs. The vet thought he was lovely, said he would be amazed if he was as old as 5, he put him nearer 3 - 4 and seemed to think he was only 2 or 3 kilos overweight as he thinks Shadow is quite a stocky dog and may well have quite a bit of Lab in him!! Shadow has already lost weight, due to 2 long walks a day and eating real dog food. The vet also gave me some advice on how to overcome his fear of the car so watch this space! He is booked in to be neutered in 3 weeks time. Shadow really is a lovely dog, he is so loving and gentle and loves all people and other dogs. He is a bit of a fretter, everytime one of us goes out he is very restless and cries a bit until they come back, although I remember my parents lurcher behaving in the same way so perhaps this is a typical lurcher thing? I have also noticed that he doesn't like the telephone, everytime I answer the phone and start chatting he starts crying until I hang up, funny boy! As mentioned in his original posting he is very aptly named as he really does follow me everywhere which is very sweet although I have nearly fallen over him several times! I have left him and Daisy quite a few times and he seems to be absolutely fine about being left which is a relief as I'm working this week. I think we were very lucky to get Shadow as he is an absolute poppet with no real problems and has fitted in very well with our family routine. We have tried and failed to put some photos on, perhaps you could show us Rowan?

Are you going to be on the walk at the weekend with Shadow and Daisy? Hope so. Looking forward to seeing him and having a cuddle.

gosh how did i miss this posting until now, have been looking daily, then miss a day and wow great update and pictures, and shadow looking so happy and loved, just as i knew he would be. actually robbie went into vets himself yesterday for neutering, so my day was taken up with him, but he is great today, so robbie will be thinking of you shadow in 3 weeks time, and say to tell you, its not that bad really, and you will be spoilt a little afterwards i guessed when shadow arrived home with you emma and paul, that he possibly wouldn't eat for a bit, he was exactlly the same when he arrived here, so i was glad that i sent him off to you with a full belly. not sure about the phone thing, never noticed that here, but he does have a pitiful cry, but generally settled quite well when we went out and he was left with the others. i do hope you get the car issue sorted soon, and having done it once, and he realises that you are all going out together and coming back together, he will relax a bit. those photos are great paul, goodness he is such a good looking lad isn't he, and i can't tell you what it means to us to see shadow so relaxed and happy. Can't wait to show pete the photos when he gets back from work. thanks again for the updates, we can never have tooo many and to you all for giving shadow his forever home, and loving him so much. nina x

So, it's been a month since our last post and quite a lot has happened. Shadow has lost about 5 kilos and his danglers. The first has a lot to do with two walks a day and some sensible feeding. The second has rather more to do with the local vet who, it has to be said, did a very tidy job. Shadow has been brilliant so far, he has such a gentle way about him and lets the girls give him loads of cuddles on the sofa. He likes a rough and tumble with me. And has even started to get braver with Daisy, teasing her by taking her ball when we go on walks. He likes to roam when we're out on the back field (unless Fionn charges on and attacks him) but when we're at home he really does live up to his name. He sticks to us like glue, particularly in the kitchen, where you have to be so careful not to trip over him. He has a couple of really special friends on the field, particularly Mini, a tiny black Lahpsa-Poo who follows him everywhere. We all really enjoyed the Rescue walk at Sandridge the other week. So much so that we went back to the woods yesterday to see all the bluebells in bloom (And so can you thanks to the technological miracle that is photobucket). On our way back we bumped into Fionn, Tipton and Ollie (who looks a lot better, but had just stolen a whole pat of butter - naughty boy). Shadow has definitely relaxed a lot more over the past week or so, to the extent that he's taken himself off to bed while I've been typing this. The only tricky thing at the mo is that he's still not keen on car journeys, but it just needs time. We are absolutely delighted with Shadow and all love him very much, even Daisy licks his ears when they lie on the sofa together. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

So, we're down at my parents in the New Forest (New Milton branch) with Shadow, Daisy and my in-law's terrier Bertie. The two hour drive down here was um, interesting. I drove whilst Emma opted to wrestle with Shadow. He calmed down by the time we got half way down the M3, but started freaking out again as we entered the forest. To be honest, I just think he's not used to cars and the more we drive the better he'll get. We went to the beach this morning and he was ine on the way back. However, that may have something to do with the act that we were out for three hours and the dogs probably covered 7 miles each. All three are flaked out on the sofas as I type, after the minor excitement of chasing a fox out of the back garden. Shadow loved the beach, digging, chasing and snapping at the foamy surf (we're smelling the repurccussions of that right now, pheeww-eeee). His coat looked hilarious after he jumped into a particularly high breaker, all spiky yet soft, like a baby hedgehog. (but with really big teeth, a tail and black). At home, Shad continues to be a delight; living up to his name as he tracks Emma and I around the house. He loves the garden now the weather is getting warmer and races Daisy for the frisbee and tennis balls. He always comes when called and is happy to sit and give paw. Anyhoo, I'm climbing a 130ft mast for the Jubilee Sailing Trust tomorrow jst.org.uk so it's time to sign of and contemplate my fear. Hope you enjoy the new photos.

ah thank-you Paul for more updates on Shadow, i swear he is getting more handsome by the day. i love those pictures of him in the sea, and especially the one with the wind blowing his ears up. gosh, he must be loving his life wth you and your family, and i am sure once he realises, that when he goes out in the car, he will be coming back with you again, he will soon settle and enjoy his trips. He has such a lovely nature, and deserved so much to find a family like you to spend his life with. i hope all went well with the climb !! 130 ft rather you than me, i have no head for heights, i can't even climb the ladder into our loft at home, seriously !!! love to emma and the children, and as usual big big kisses for Shadow nina and pete x

Aaah, only just caught up with these updates on the gorgeous Shadow. (I'm the person who collected him from the vets in Andover, and would have fostered him if my dog Percy hadn't had other ideas. The rest of us thought Shadow was just lovely ) He's looking so well and happy!! He's clearly very much loved and having the best ever time with you. Thank you for the updates, it's great to see how well things are going ;D

Blimey! is it really May since we last posted? Well, it goes to show just how time flies by when you're outside having fun. Shadow's lost even more weight since the last pix and is a lean, mean, tennis ball shredding machine now. He went down to the New Forest for a week without us and loved it. But my Mum and Dad were so shattered by all the walking and 6.30 starts that they may have to think three times before having him back again. At the end of August we took both dogs to Chelsea-on-Sea (Burnham Market) on the North Norfolk coast for our annual week-long pilgrimage to Brancaster beach. Unsurprisingly, Shadow absolutely loved it. He roamed on his own for miles at a time. and once our voices reached him (I can shout pretty loudly) he came straight back. He loves biting waves and digs manically in the sand to try and get where they've gone. He also went swimming properly (across a small inlet, not in the sea - he left that stuff to Daisy the terrier) for what we reckon must have been the first time, given the fuss he made about it. Over the school holidays Shadow has become even more confident and a little bit too big for his boots. Snapping at us at home and other dogs on the heath was causing a little concern. So, acting on some advice from a friend at work, we put Lily, our youngest girl (she's eight) in charge of Shadow - letting him out in the morning, feeding him and taking control in the car. And it worked! Within a week, Shadow had calmed down. He asks if he can get on the sofa, he's nearly ok in the car and he's not going for anyone on walks. And today, it all cam together beautifully. Every year, Hearing Dogs' St Albans branch holds an informal but very popular dog show. And as usual, we took the dogs. There were 125 dogs entered over three hundred times at £1 each - all of which went to Hearing Dogs. Entrants covered pedigrees, crosses and multiple mixes like Shadow and Daisy. We entered Shadow in five categories and Daisy in four. In his first category 'Most handsome dog' there were over 50 entries. Lily handled him and the Shadster surprised us all by coming second! In best young handler Shadow missed out, but Daisy and Sienna got a 'special'. 'Waggiest tail' and 'Most appealing eyes' drew blanks too. The biggest category by far was 'Dog the Judges would most like to take home' (told you it was an informal show) and nearly every single dog entered. Well, you could have knocked us over with a chihuahua as Shadow and Lily walked of with first prize! Bloody brilliant! Best of Show was a bridge too far, but we all had a wonderful day. Shadow went to bed at 8 o'clock, exhausted by his success. So well done our handsome boy. Not bad for a lovable scruff, eh? Second most handsome dog! You take the low road... Waiting for the judges We won! We won! Our champion!

When I think of his fate before he came into us, he is being well looked after by his guardian angel Your girls are so lovely, and Shadow looks brilliant. I absolutely love that photo of the two of them. Looking forward to seeing you all for a walk again soon. Shame both our walk and the dog show were on the same days.
