Pupster has landed, and has not stopped racing around the house. He has come with the name Hunter!!!! Him and Harley have already hit it off, with Hunter launching himself all over Harley untill it's pin down with a huge paw. He is not phased by anything , very confident and his tail is non stop wagging. He definitely needs feeding up and is very greedy with his food. The food I have been given by Hilary is called ci puppy love ? It's 28% protein. Given that he has so much energy/excitability I feel I should try something else, gradually introducing anything new. Any suggestions are welcome. He has now crashed out in the dog's room on his own, so no separation issues as yet. I have taken some pics, but had to delete most as they were just a blur, I will get some better ones and get them posted. Many thanks to James for the transport run and Hilary for taking care of him.xx

Claire, he's only been on the Ci food for a couple of days, so don't worry too much about changing him over slowly. When Hilary collected him he was on Wilko own brand puppy food. Believe it or not, the Wilko website doesn't give any info on the ingredients, preferring instead to give you the dimensions of the box it comes in & warn you that the contents are not washable. (I was literally speechless when I read it.) But I found the ingredients for the Wilko adult dog food on a forum & it was about as bad as it could get. (See below.) Needless to say, we were anxious to get him off that 'stuff' as quickly as possible, so Ci Dog Foods (who are big supporters of sighthound causes) very kindly sent some samples to Hilary by next day delivery. But if you feel he'd be better on something else then it shouldn't be a problem as I doubt he's had time to get used to it yet anyway. --------------------------------------- Wilko own brand Adult Dog Food :- Composition Cereals (4% Rice in the component with Rice), Meat and Animal Derivatives (4% Chicken in the component with Chicken), Derivatives of Vegetable Origin, Oils and Fats, Vegetables (4% Pea in the component with Pea, 4% Carrot in the component with Carrot), Minerals, Various Sugars

In other words Wilko food is just a load of crap with a lot of sugar!

Just a quick update. Hunter is such a bundle of fun and happiness. He loves all my pack and is learning his boundaries with taking things too far. His upset tummy seems to continue, so I have taken him off all puppy food, and am now feeding him small amounts of pasta/rice , he's not impressed! Tomorrow I will take him to the vets. Thankfully, they are open 7 days a week. Hopefully he's just adjusting to new environment and diet, but I do worry that he is not getting enough fluids in him Fingers crossed and soothing tummy vibes for this special boy.

You could try making some bone broth and giving him Slippery Elm/Tree Bark powder to settle his tummy. Poor lad, not nice for either of you. www.k9instinct.com/blog/the-benefits-of-bone-broth-for-dogs

Thanks Loz. Trouble is he picks up everything that's on the ground, from rabbit and horse poo to twigs, stones and mud. He's looking so skinny but has loads of energy, so I'm trying to keep him calm and rested.

Poor pup. I gues a 24 hour starve is not a good idea with a skinny pup? Hope the vets can sort him.

Poor Hunter. I was so worried about his diarrhea, I took him this evening to see the vet, he's been prescribed omeprazole and has electrolytes for fluid loss.since coming home, he's been very subdued and not wanting to do anything but curl up and sleep. I will monitor him during the night as he needs to go out every hour or more.

Poor little mite does seem to be going though it, hope his tummy settles soon. One thing that occured to me is maybe he has Giardia which is a nasty little protozoan parasite which can cause the symptoms you are seeing, including the picking up and eating of all sorts of rubbish; it's as though they are trying to get rid of the irritation in the gut. Normal worming doesn't kill it. Testing for it is by collecting poo samples over three consecutive days as the cysts are shed intermitantly so it can be difficult to find.

Phew, little pupster is much better. He slept for 7 hours after returning from the vets, and crawled into my lap at 2am this morning . He's still a bit subdued but much bouncier. His tummy seems to have settled and is now on small meals of chicken and rice. Lead walks in the garden as I don't want him picking up anything that will set off any more tummy upset. ( His knickname is Dustbin dog )

So pleased he is feeling better. Once he is recovered and on decent food he should pick up.
