Just caught up with this, I was scared to read it in case it was bad news. So pleased that Ben is much happier, it does indeed break your heart that he wasn't given proper attention before. Whatever time he has left will be the best he's had for a long time. Thank you Carmel xx Oh dear, all blurry now and I'm going out in a minute!

I love that boy too. And I am so pleased he is enjoying as much life as he can. You never know Carmel... Miss Elly was only given 3 months to live when she came in and stayed for nearly 3 years. xxx

So pleased to hear how well the medication is working to ease the pain. It's given him a new lease of life which he's clearly enjoying. Well done for all your care and support for the lovely Ben

Ben is doing well after a little blip a couple of weeks ago. He had terrible liquid diarrhoea one night/morning, and really wasn't himself. I wouldn't normally go to the vet for diarrhoea unless it lasted more than 24 hours but it was obvious that Ben's wasn't due to an upset stomach so we got an appointment that evening. Ben's physical exam didn't show up any problems, so the vet felt the most likely cause was the Metacam, which I stopped giving him immediately. I am pleased to say that there were no more problems after that day. Ben was already on Gabapentin, 1 tablet 3 times a day. I asked Helen if we could do anything to replace the Metacam for his joint pain and she suggested Tramadol so he now has one of those twice a day. I had carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand last Monday so have enlisted the help of a neighbour, Kat, to walk the dogs. It didn't take long for Kat to give Ben a nickname - Bouncing Ben! He really does love going out for his walks. A friend took a video of Ben one day but after struggling for over an hour with photobucket I have given up hope of being able to post it on here Having previously said that I would only get Ben weighed if I had reason to take him to the vet, I did pop him on the scales and he has put on a kilo. I am pleased with this - his tummy area has filled out and his spine is no longer just bone. He's a really lovely dog and I am hopeful that with careful pain management he will be with us for a good while yet!

Great update apart from the little blip. Metacam can have that effect. 🙁

Ooh, thanks for the tip! I just had a practice and posted a video from Youtube onto my Facebook page. Now I'm going to see how to post one on here: If you can see the video - it was taken by a lady called Julie who offered to come and stay for a few days to help me with the hounds. The little free-running black girl is Bonnie, a 10 yr old greyhound bitch. On-lead I've got Fluke, 11 yr old greyhound boy who is muzzled only because he gets over-excited when he sees any other dog and tries to nip them! The little white & red dog is Ella, a Brittany I brought over from Spain 18 months ago and who has recently taken up residence in her new home! The off-lead rough-coat girl with the pink collar is 13 year old Perica, a galga from Spain. The brindle greyhound in the harness is Betty, 12 - she has disintegrated discs in her neck so is on Gabapentin and is not allowed off-lead (try telling her that when she's blasting round the garden... !) The other black on-lead greyhound is Apollo, a 10 yr old dog that spent his whole life in kennels. With Ben that makes 7 (known as the young oldies). Who is missing? The old oldies!!! At home waiting for their turn to walk were Snoopy, Ethan and Will. If you can't see the video - HELP!!!

It's a natural anti inflammatory and is working really well for my old girl who can't take Nsaids. www.ace-canine.com/flexceladrin.html
