Thanks for everyone who thanked me for taking him on. You guys all do the same though, so thank you too. Dave is an absolute pleasure to have around. He is just the nicest chap. Very affectionate and sweet natured. He is starting to have the odd attempt at being dominant with Doris, but it's like he's saying 'Would you mind awfully if I am a bit dominant' and Doris replies 'Yes I do mind. I am a Princes.' And that is the end of the matter. They have taken to having such enthusiastic zoomies in the garden that Doris has now cut her 'stop' pad quite badly and is out of action. A couple of 'Dodgy Dave' things: he likes shoes, and not in a good way. He also likes spectacles. He is very very nervous of some dogs and refuses to walk past them. Even ignoring treats. He still refuses to go up stairs. This is quite useful in the house as Doris gets time out, but less useful when you really need him to get somewhere. Refused to go up the stairs in the pet shop, for example. I'm not fussing over much about these things at the moment. I'm just concentrating on making him feel secure. On the plus side, we took him to the pub last night and he behaved much better than Doris. Sat quietly as good as can be. He has now had his first injection and is booked in for the snip next week. What a lovely, lovely boy.

You are doing a great job. It will take Dave time to adjust and trust.

Trust takes time so I wouldn't worry too much. Jethro was scared of his own shadow but over time has gotton much braver. Who knows what his experience of life was before SLR. You are doing a wonderful thing Dom. Not everyone can cope with nervy dogs. I love your description of Dave trying to be dominant with Doris!

Dave has now had the snip, and that seems to have gone very well. I am trying to keep him on lead walks but he has escaped to the back garden with Doris and gone bonkers a couple of times. Luckily he can be enticed with treats. Very food oriented. I'll be happy when I can let them run around and burn off some energy. Just found him downstairs with both of my wellies. If anyone has any solutions to this I'd be very grateful. Anyway, despite all this he is a lovely sweet boy. We all love him. I'm not saying any more than that at the moment... I'll try to upload some pics.

Sending lots of heal quickly vibes to Dave Re the shoe fetish, remove the temptation ie make sure all stealable objects are moved out of reach or put away in cupboards. My Lottie has the same fetish as Dave and I have just had to be disciplined and make sure all temptations are not within the reach of her mouth

Anyway, despite all this he is a lovely sweet boy. We all love him. I'm not saying any more than that at the moment... Don't think you can just slip that in and leave it .... Seriously he sounds a sweetheart. It really is a case of remove temptation. I had a greyhound who always stole shoes and handbags! Never chewed them though. Just a fetish

We have a shoe chewer here as well. Started with just shoe relocating but did move on from there, now pretty much back to relocating again but only occasionally. I did read one article that said to just remove the shoe and give them a replacement shoe or toy so they learn what they allowed, not sure if it works or not but I can't see why not. Ours have the bottom shelf of the unit which they have stuffed with toys and chews and they do go and dig out what they want so they do learn where their toys/bones are.

Just had a vision of Dave wearing your wellies. Luckily neither of mine have shown an interest in shoes, thank goodness.

Rowlf likes putting his nose inside my slippers and having a good sniff - brave boy!!! Dogs have some odd hobbies! Today was the first day since his op that the dogs have been allowed to run round the garden together. They went completely bonkers. Afterwards, I was relishing a few moments peace and quiet until I went downstairs and found that Dave had torn up a book. I'll try to upload some photos now...

In the second one you can see Doris cavorting on the sofa, trying to get his attention. The last one is charming ;-o but you can see his op isn't troubling him!

Bear with Dom folks, she has decided that Dave is just too big and heavy to be a match for Doris. They love each other, but the bitey play hard and fast is taking it's toll on Doris and she has had a couple of abrasions on her neck and ears where her skin is just too thin.
Please don't feel bad Dom. He is a lovely big lumux and will fit right in in most situations, but little Doris is so tiny and thin skinned. He's a great dog and Dom would be the first to agree. But just too young and OTT for Doris to handle. xx

So, so sorry about this. I just don't think he understands how delicate she is. They both obviously love each other too. He is not aggressive. He is such a great dog. Cuddly, well behaved, mostly. Will stop doing anything naughty if you tell him to. House trained. Still won't go upstairs. We are heartbroken.

So sorry this didn't work out. The right dog for Doris will be out there somewhere.

Sometimes things just don't quite work however much we want them to. Doris's perfect playmate is out there......as is the perfect home for Dave, with other hounds who match their size. Hugs to you Dom.
