Well done Claire! Congratulations Ken & Sue. We adopted Comet to join our existing pack member (Snoop). They had great chemistry from the outset, but also had a few spats as they settled down and worked out who was the boss of what. We kept a divider up in the back of our car (an estate) for a good few weeks so that they had their own space. Nowadays, they happily travel together with no divide. Likewsise, when snoozing. If one surprised the other there would be barking, but warning signals rather than intent-to-harm. We did our best to balance the love and ensure they both felt special. It took a few weeks for them to find their rhythm - together and with us. Hope that helps a little. Good luck!

It takes a few weeks before the dogs settle into a pattern and the new dog learns the routines. If the dogs get along on first meeting then it's just a matter of time before they adjust to the new set-up. I agree with Claire, don't make too much fuss of her, let her find her place on her own... and come back here and ask questions if you need to. There's lots of people here who have had numerous fosters come through their door and know what it's like when a dog first comes in.

I too would suggest a divider, or a crate for one of them to travel in if there's room in the back to fit one in. I'm sure once they have adjusted to life together you can probably dispense with it, although they are always handy to have, tucked away in the shed just in case you need one.

Many thanks for the advice offered re. Emmy snapping at timid Pepper. I have waited a few days before responding partly because the message board refused to recognise me but more to see if the girls would sort themselves out. They are getting there slowly and the snapping, when it happens, is much more half-hearted. I should have said at the start there was no biting, just a show of teeth and sudden growling. I have not partitioned the back of the car but have been a bit more careful about who gets in first etc. I have to remind myself that Emmy only arrived six days ago! I think a turning point came yesterday when they were out together in a huge field of long wet grass. Pepper did a massive circle at speed in a "look, I can do THIS" sort of way at which Emmy looked at her as she was coming round for the second time and joined in. I would never have guessed a small still rather stout older dog could whizz like that but she obviously enjoyed channelling her inner whippet because there was a second even faster go a bit later on. Emmy was rather stiff in the shoulder later in the day so things have been a bit more sedate today. If I could find out how to add photos from my phone, I would do

Hi Sue, Emmy can still run quite fast when the mood takes her although she will always cut across instead of the full circle! I am glad things are settling with her and Pepper, I am certain it will continue to improve, Emmy just needs to find her place, she has had alot of change in the past few months. Can't believe she left here 1 week ago today, I do miss her. So glad she is happy with you guys (I'd love to hear where Snorkmaiden came from!) PS.. I don't think youcan upload pictures from a phone, I certainly can't with mine.

What a lovely update, I am so glad to hear that Emmy is starting to chill. You can upload phone photo's but you have to do it via the dreaded photobucket first. There is a how to section on the forum somewhere, good luck x

I do all my forum contact on my phone and don't have any of the issues other people seem to have with photobucket.
I just downloaded the photobucket app, upload photos from my phone gallery. Copy the IMG link once it's uploaded and paste it into the comments box. Simples!
Just make sure you amend the settings so it doesn't do an auto upload - your free space will fill up really quickly and it will take ages!

I received a lovely update from Sue this morning. Emmy is really a smashing little dog and has proven herself to be a really sweet girl with her nervous sister. I had hoped to copy both email and pictures in full size but pb is not being nice!! Just to say she really enjoying life with lots of amazing walks and holidays. A really happy ending

Hello Claire,
This is me, Emmy, at home with my friend Pepper and also with my favourite toy, a squeaky chimpanzee. You told me last May that I would like it here and I do. I hear them say to people I am the ugliest dog they have ever had: although I do have a bit of a waistline now I am never going to be the beautiful lurcher streamlined shape they are used to but at least I am just sturdy now rather than stout.
I get one long and one shorter walk every day with an even longer one on the South Downs every Sunday and Ken takes me on coastal holidays with him, so far to the Gower and to the Dorset coast but who knows where it might be next.
Anyway they make up for comments about my appearance by saying what a brilliant dog I am, calm and steady, playful, surprisingly speedy when I feel like it, excellent recall, full of character with my vocal attempts to get attention, things like that. I know Pepper relies on me to deal with social encounters with other dogs because she is always worried unless she knows them - silly her. But I'm not phased by other dogs at all - unless it's the wheaten terrier from next door escaping into our garden which I DO NOT LIKE. Grrr ....
So thank you Claire for finding me this new home. I know I'm not very pretty and older than most people want to take on but we all really like each other, as I think you knew we would. Hope you have a lovely Christmas.
love
Emmy🐾
