Bertie came into SLR a couple of months ago as his family felt they could not give him the exercise and training that he needed. He was strong on the lead and very fearful of dogs coming towards him, so much so that he would spin and bark at them. SLR sent Bertie to training camp for two weeks, in which he was gradually de-sensitised to other dogs walking near him. He has been in foster in Essex since then, but Barney, his foster, has had a couple of falls and is unable to take out the three dogs easily and implement the training that has been ongoing. Bertie has now gone over to Christine in Reading with her 3 Lurchers, one male and two female. As expected he has settled in really easily and is enjoying his playtime with them. We are looking for a home with another dog around. A home where Bertie will be allowed off lead runs in not too busy an area, where he can get to know his friends on walks gradually and learn that they are not going to go for him. I am sure Christine will update this thread shortly. Meantime, here are a couple of photos of this lovely lad.

Bertie has been with me now for 5 days and he's been a dream. He is such a loving gentle giant. He's been great with my dogs and they've all accepted him and he's relaxed and comfortable with them. He's the ideal age for adopting. He's a playful, happy little boy but without any of the puppy issues. He's clean in the house, no separation anxiety, he's happy to sleep on any of the beds outside my bedroom all night without crying, there's no food aggression - in fact he is a very slow eater and I have to be patient with him to finish his food - he hasn't chewed up anything (so far!), and he walks really nicely on the lead with no pulling. He's a tall boy at just over 25 inches to the shoulder and he weighs around 23 kilos. I've not seen any signs of reaction to any other dogs. I've been taking him out on his own to the local park where there are lots of other dogs that he is forced to interact with and he's been fine. I'm not letting him off the lead yet so he has to be prepared to see other dogs and have them come up close while he's on the lead and he's perfectly happy.... he just wants to play. Even when an out of control boxer came hurtling at him and snapped he didn't react and he was fine with the other dogs around after it happened. I've fallen in love with this little man and everyone who meets him says what a lovely boy he is... here are the comments from others on a recent SLR walk "Bertie is stunning", and "Bertie is a stunner and a credit to all those who have/continue to work so hard to help him become the calm, handsome lad I saw today - he was so good the whole time even with the 'pack' running and playing lurcher games all around him!" If I didn't have 3 dogs already I wouldn't hesitate to keep him. Anyone wanting to rehome a young dog would have to go a long way to find a nicer little boy. Here are some more photos. I'll post a video of him playing with Alice shortly. Interacting with other dogs at the park Roaching on the sofa - he has a really cute spotty tummy Chilling out on the sofa with my other dogs Doing his Gromet impression - he has crazy ears! ... and he loves his toys and nylabones

Bertie continues to impress me with his sweet nature and ability to adapt to our routines. It's less than a week and he's already decided he likes the crate I have in the kitchen. The dogs aren't allowed in my bedroom and for the last 2 nights rather than sleep on one of the 4 beds I have upstairs I can hear him go downstairs after I've gone to bed. There are 2 beds and the crate downstairs and in the morning I've found him in the crate. This is so encouraging as it shows how relaxed and comfortable he is and a sign that he is a very adaptable and easy-going little boy. He loves playing with Alice but also loves chilling out on the sofa with me in the evenings. He is so cute with his spotty tummy and legs. Here he is snuggled up on the sofa with me and being cheeky with Alice, jumping onto the garden seat!
and in the crate... I call this his "adopt me!" face

Great update Christine. You and your pack bring out the best in dogs but also thanks to Barney for all the early work he did with Bertie.

It's fun watching Bertie and Alice playing in the garden. Bertie soon learned that he could run round the back of the Den expecting Alice to chase him, but she knows exactly what will happen and just waits for him to reappear. You can see he's surprised to see her, but it doesn't take him long to try a different tactic! Bertie is a really funny, playful little man... Alice is the one making all the noise... as always!
