Aston's potential new family are so keen they've just rung & asked if we can meet this evening, instead of tomorrow. So, off we go!
Keep your fingers crossed everybody. And get the tissues ready, cos I'm gonna really struggle to hand this boy over.

Good luck little man... and sharing your sadness at having to say goodbye. It's so hard to let them go but each one we help on their journey to a new life means we can take in one more. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Aston was a little star & they all got on great! He even reached up & gave his potential new mum kisses before they left. We're seeing them again next weekend & are going to try introducing him to their cat before any final decisions are taken, but it's all looking very promising so far.

Thought you'd all like an update on Aston. (He's lost 200g so far, so we're moving in the right direction.)
He's come RIGHT out of his shell in the last few days. In fact he went from meek & mild to bold & bouncy almost overnight! ... It's only for short bursts though, he's still a very laid back young man most of the time.
Is this laid back enough? (The shiny patches on the sofa are cellophane, that he 'found' in the kitchen.)
He has finally accepted my Ruby (& my Dad, thankfully!) & now jumps to his feet whenever she moves, in the hope that she might play with him. (Ruby gets her stitches out tomorrow, so then I'll be able to let them play properly. )
Sofa buddies. (He even rested his head on her for a few minutes yesterday.)
So what else have I learned about our Aston?
~ He always wants whatever Ruby has. Even though I always give them exactly the same. ... This means they spend a large part of their day swapping treats/chews/toys, as Ruby is too polite to complain. She just lets him have her's & then wanders off to find his.
~ He WILL steal your food if he gets half a chance! I turned my back for a split second yesterday, to rescue his chew from Ruby (who had finished her's already) & he grabbed my lunch off the kitchen worktop. ... He is, however, very good when it comes to 'No' & 'Off', so as long as you are always aware of where he is, it's not too big of an issue.
~ He loves water, I told you that before. Only it turns out that rain doesn't count as water, lol. It started to rain whilst we were walking today & he fairly DRAGGED me back home! He's proved he knows the way now anyway.
~ He's eager to meet all the dogs we see on our walks, but still gets most excited when we see small dogs. He is also now VERY keen to get offlead for a good run/play, something that I'm hoping to be able to do for him next week.
~ He's pretty good at amusing himself & will work his way through the toy box, carefully selecting & playing with each toy in turn. He is especially fond of a squeaky duck. Or three, lol. (He had them all out at once yesterday.) ... If there are no toys to hand then the recycling bag will do. ... *sigh*
~ He's a fast learner, having picked up 'Stand' (when we approach kerbs) within a couple of walks. He also learns routes really quickly & seems to remember people too. Especially if they've given him a fuss, or a walk. (I've been getting my Mum to walk him every now & then, so that he's not with me 24/7.)
~ He does have a prey drive after all, albeit not a particularly strong one. But yesterday, for the first time, he showed real interest in a rabbit. Admittedly he didn't even notice it until Ruby tipped him off (it was all of 4 feet away!!!), but once he'd seen it & it ran into the bushes he was very keen to follow. ~ He loves to 'burrow' & will always work his way under a blanket or duvet if given half the chance.
Spot the dog? There he is!
I'm going to miss this boy so much when he moves on!

Apologies for not having updated before, it's all been a bit manic round here (dogs coming & going, fundraising events & my parents' 50th wedding anniversary) so, actually, Aston is now happily ensconced in his new home.
I did get a bunch more piccies of him during his last few days, I just never found the time to upload them until now, so here goes ...
This is how we started most of our days. ... "Ooh, are you awake? Can I have a cuddle?" Then of course, cos Aston had snuggled up, Ruby would invariably insist of getting closer too. They'd both snuggle tighter & tighter against me, until I was forced to get up due to lack of space! See that little patch of white sheet on the left? That's all they left me! And as soon as I moved they'd spread out & fill the bed entirely. "You know, seeing as you're up now, how about some breakfast?" And this is Aston on one of our offlead walks. (Photo courtesy of my friend John Small.) Beautiful picture!
While all that was going on, Aston was having repeated meetings with a lovely couple called Lin & Phil. They were very keen to get to know him & I felt they were the perfect match, but we all decided to take it slowly as he had become very attached to me & they had never had a dog before.
However, after several successful walks & my leaving him at their house for a little while while I went to the shops, we took the plunge & he moved in with them on Sunday the 2nd of August. And I'm happy to report that, after a few little glitches over sleeping arrangements & one brief chase of their cat, they are all now a happy family of four.
The obligatory hand over picture. We met for a walk & then he went home with them, which made for an easier transition I think.
I miss him VERY much! He got into my heart in a way that no other foster dog ever has. But I'm totally confident that he is going to have a lovely life with Lin, Phil & Joey (the cat) & am happy that I still get to see him from time to time too. ... In fact they brought him to the Greyhound Walks show a few days ago &, after giving me a wonderfully warm greeting, I was relieved to see how much he had bonded with them.
Be happy little man!
