Albert sounds as though he's made huge progress with you Simon. A voluntary sit too?? Such a lovely boy.

... A voluntary sit too?? Sort of. More, random, of his own volition. I've pushed, pulled and lured tiny bits to see any hint that he knows sit. Nothing. So on to 'lay down' first. Once laying down, he goes into sit easily. It's fascinating. I've never had a dog that doesn't sit!

How would he cope with a lively Saluki x pup? We're looking into getting Loki a play mate. We wanted a slightly older dog that he can play with & that will show him the ropes. He is GORGEOUS!

He doesn't know the ropes. Play, social, house & food etiquette all seem completely new to him. He'd be rather challenging if he wasn't so calm and un-flustered. That's not to say he's bomb-proof. A unexpected quick movement and loud noise scares him badly. He's learning civilised behaviour very quickly. It has it's benefits! I tend to do unexpected weird stuff, it comes naturally,,, so he's getting the hang of that too. But guide a youngster? I've no idea. As always, please contact Jenny to discuss specific possible adoptions.

Today, two interesting stages in Albe's progress to adoptability: 1. He stayed at home, with Helen & The Boyz, ie didn't come to work with me. Very well done Helen, not flinching when it was suggested,,,, actually, she suggested it. Very little whimpering when I left and no drama when I got home. Helped by sunny weather and much time able to go out into the rear, secure garden. Very pleasing result. Actually,,, as I type, Albe has stayed in the other room with everyone else. Unfaithful, traitor, deserter, turncoat! 2. He sat from standing, when I asked,,,, who am I kinding, TOLD Joey to sit. With bestest-good-boy Ringo already sat, Joey squeezed next to him on the front porch mat. Little room left for the third dog, I began the "lie down Ablert" manoeuvre, excepting to go back up to a sit, which he now does very well,,,, and he just sat. Almost missed it and kept insisting on a lie-down! A few quick GOOD BOY SIT GOOD BOY SIT YEAH SIT SIT.... and he gave me a what-the-hell-ok-move-on look. I do go on about sitting, right? Well, I'd not realised how useful sitting is as a pause/change in what you want a dog to do. A standing dog just doesn't feel any where near as much under control or paying attention to me. This is the fun and frustrating part of fostering. Getting to play-test-train different dogs in your own home. I highly recommend it.

Claire, I'm cheating! He seems to want to sit. I just want him to do it more often and in particular, when I want it.
I can't imagine Jethro, or Romi's Nero, giving me the time of day!

I think this smiley is perfect for you and Albert, Simon I totally agree with your view on sitting, really useful. And as it doesn't seem to cause Albert any discomfort (i.e. he's doing it by himself), then the challenge is back on to get him to do it when you ask him to. We taught Alfie with reward based training (treats), but I'm sure he'll pick it up by watching when the Boyz do it. I was mightily impressed the first time I passed a young lady with a GSD doing a sit/watch me in the early days with Alfie. Alfie now does a great sit/watch me too.

Almost feeling able to take photo's while out walking, but still more concerned with keeping an eye on things. Albert's often off lead. Should get some moving/action shots this weekend, but until then... With me, R 'n' J on the other couch, Albert goes solo on the other. Just now,,,, TA DARR! Not completely at ease, but defo a sit.

Albert and I visited our lovely neighbours this evening, who where kind enough to offer their cat for testing. I've no experience of doing such, but judge Albert not particularly interested in cats, if not completely cat safe. The test cat is very confident with dogs and in the 20 mins or so I was there, he and Albert paid less and less attention to each other. It was an on-lead test and the cat we met on the way out, which ran, caused much more interest, but that's not a fair measurement, Shirley.
Such a calm boy, he appears so well mannered, when in effect he's got virtually no idea about anything. He may never have even seen a cat before, or visited any house other than mine.

Trip into town and the barber's. All calm. Big hit with everyone, including a toddler girl,,, with dad right there... phew! The ladies in the barber's are so kind. The one doing my hair, walking twice as far to get around Albert, his lead attached to the chair.

What a lovely update and what a great job you're all doing with this lovely lad. I too agree with the sitting thing. Maisie has picked it up really well too and yes it does give you a feeling that it may just prove useful in a situation where it was really needed. I feel the same about waiting at the kerb whether there's traffic or not, it's just a routine I always use.
