I know it's a bit soon to be giving updates on her progress, especially as she's not strictly ready to be considered for adoption yet, but I had to share with you how good this little girl has been about sleeping in her crate. I don't like my dogs to suffer separation anxiety so I'm very strict with myself about how I leave them and greet them. Poor little Bambi was not happy having to go into her crate the first night and cried a lot. It was hard to ignore this tiny little mite but I managed it and she eventually went to sleep. Then the second night it was even worse... she cried and yelped for over an hour, went to sleep and then woke at 2am and started crying for another hour. It was really difficult not to get up and bring her into my bedroom but I held fast and prepared myself for a third night. But amazingly she went into her crate, did a little whimper and then went to sleep and didn't stir until I got up to make a cup of tea early the next morning. I thought this might have been a fluke so didn't want to update the forum until I could test her out for a bit longer. I'm very happy to say that she's now slept every night without any fuss and I've even been able to leave her when I take the dogs out and there's been no crying. The other big breakthrough is that Alice has let her lie in the bed with her. I've been putting her back into the crate after I've let her out first thing and she's been fine with that, but this morning I've left her downstairs with Alice. She climbed into the bed with her so I thought I'd try leaving her there and she made no attempt to follow me. Here's a photo of them together. She's learning a lot from my dogs, especially Alice who she follows around. It's really sweet watching her follow Alice out into the garden and do her wee alongside her. Alice looks so big and grown up next to her.

What a cutie. Thank you Alice, for showing Bambi what to do and for letting her have a little snuggy in your bed. Well played on the crate training Christine, it's for the best as not every potential adopter will want a dog on the bed with them at night.

Beautiful. It's amazing how the dogs soon take over the care and show them the ways things are done.

I know that people think I'm being hard when I ignore my dogs as I leave the house and when I come home but I can't bear to think of them being anxious and upset when I have to leave them. I would love to come home to a wonderful greeting from the dogs but I know that when I come home and they don't stir this means they haven't got at all stressed by me not being there. I feel a special responsibility for a foster ... as Loz says, I don't want to lumber an adopter with a problem at night. So if I can train Bambi to sleep on her own then it can be up to the adopter if they let her into their bedroom ... doesn't work so well the other way round!
All good at the vets this morning. She's put on a nearly a kilo since she first went into the surgery which was a relief as I was worried that she is so thin; she's not dehydrated despite not drinking much and is generally looking good. I have some worming tablets for her and she's back next Monday for the start of her vaccines. She's not contagious now but I still need to be scrupulous about hygiene and she can't go out, of course, until she's had the course of vaccines.

I don't think you are being hard at all Christine, you are being sensible and thinking of Bambi's future happiness and wellbeing in her new home . But I still would have caved in , I did so with Lottie after 10 minutes of her howling , but bye that time ie after only a couple of hours I knew she was staying anyway.

She is such a cutie and good girl.
I guess Lewis is not stressed by me leaving him, as I have to go upstairs (on return) to make sure no one has stolen him.

I have a confession I've been a really irresponsible puppy fosterer!!! I let Bambi join me in my new Den to watch an episode of Breaking Bad at the weekend. She watched it for a bit and then fell asleep on my lap, but not until she'd watched the scene with the tortoise, the twins, the machete and the head!!! I should have realised it was much too gory for a young puppy but it wasn't til afterwards, when she started playing with Alice and was a bit grrrrry, that I realised what I'd done. Hopefully there's no lasting damage
