Lovely pics, especially with the children, he is a gorgeous hound. Ditto - well done everyone involved for sorting out a super home for this lovely boy

Had a bit of recall training today. Think I'd have had more luck calling in the rabbits. He doesn't respond at all to his name so may take a while. Had a long walk after and he never reached the length of his training lead. Rabbit bolted in front of him and he followed at a leisurely pace but was by no means chasing it. Will crack this recall so I can get him off lead but until then he's by my side. Really lovely hound and the jumping up at the kids is already getting better. He's either deaf, ignorant or no idea what his name is lol.

I find that dogs respond better to short sharp names. Bob, Gyp, Tag, come off the tongue easier and louder. He is a foodie, so I would start with a loose lead and call and treat. Longer lead, call and treat and so on. Ask Janine about the field they all hire. Might be a good start, there.

That's pretty much what I was doing but no matter what I called was being ignored. Ideally like to train him to whistle then it's always the same tone no matter who is recalling. I have about 400 acres I can use with no other pooches for distraction just got to get him use to a name. Great on the lead tho

We all dream of dogs good on the lead! For my two p's worth................give it some time, he doesn't really know you yet and expect it to take at least a couple of weeks to start a 'bond' going with him...............Good job though!

400 acres - he's gone to have a great time once he's off lead. Looking forward to hearing about this handsome little lad's progress.

For just a halfpenny's worth (I'm a newbie so don't qualify for tuppence) 'Total Recall' book by Pippa Mattinson arrived last week. The thing that really, really made sense to me (for older dogs) was to ditch the tatty old recall signal which doesn't work and start recall training from scratch with a new one - she suggests a whistle which I would probably just lose/swallow, but I think this might be what Jenny was alluding to with a shorter name and going back to long lines etc. too? Obviously a bit more to the book than just this one thing and haven't tried it yet (but will when I have read the book fully and understood it).
I can hear you all saying 'duh' but the thought of not having to struggle along with 'dog's-name-come' (with more hope than certainty) was new to me!

We all dream of dogs good on the lead! Dexter is amazingly good on the lead, just btw - all credit and HUGE thanks to whoever taught him this (earlier foster? Kevin and Moira?) - makes walks an absolute joy.
