Comet has had his stitches out and is now free to be as mad as he likes. And he is making the most of it. He and Joey have been sparring and hurtling around the yard and around the furniture for quite some time and I have now put Joey in his crate with a stuffed kong to make him have a break and restore peace. It is not too bad when it is just Joey and Comet but when Dylan joins in as well I stop them as I find the whole thing too nerve-wracking. They are all nice dogs but a writhing ball of three dogs roaring at the top of their voices while throwing themselves and each other around takes some getting used to! Neil was away last night and Comet managed to creep into bed with me this morning. At least tonight he will not be wielding his cone around like a battering ram while I am trying to sleep and he is definitely going to stay in his bed (famous last words?). His latest trick this morning was to grab the very large and full water-bowl and drag it from the kitchen into the living-room spilling all the water on the way. He certainly has a sense of humour and I have some damp carpets. He is going to go on the long-line tomorrow and start his recall training. Now I only have to convince him that training can be as much fun as his antics!

This morning I took Comet, Dylan and Sophie into an enclosed piece of rough ground and let Comet go free. He was very, very good. He bounced and zoomed around but stayed nearby and came back when called. I was a bit worried about putting him back on the lead as he used to shy away from hands going near his head and neck when he first arrived but he was no problem at all. I think/hope we are now ready for Ringo and Ruby on Saturday.

Looking at the photo again, I imagine Annette attached to Comet's lead,,, water skiing. Oh, no. That was Neil! When I take Comet on the long lead I try to steer clear of anything too exciting

Comet came with us to Simon and Helen's to meet Ringo and Ruby. It was the first time he was loose with strange dogs and he was very respectful and friendly, enjoying himself and coming back willingly to be caught or to just say hello (second from the right). Having a break: Enjoying a quick pit stop with Simon and some of the hounds(second from the left) Video of some racing:

Comet's transformed in the 3 wks since littlealfie/David and I collected and passed him over to Annette. Little hint of his previous self, the only one of note being his feet. Very splade (sp?), but apparently not as much as they were on arrival. I didn't notice back them, as David and I were manically focused on preventing an escape....
Such a joy to see the guy run free today. His first with 'unknown' dogs, ie non-Annette/Neil-pack. Excellent manners too.
I loved the way he wanted to play with Ringo and it seems he'll be able to keep up with him when fully fit. Considering he's only been permitted to run for less than a week,,, brilliant.
My favorite? Really looking forward to seeing more of this guy. The rest of this dog and human pack ain't bad company either.

Trip to Hayling Island beach today. Pictures do tell a story: How far does this thing stretch? Is it safe?
I think I may have to turn back, the Isle of Wight is further than I thought after all! Come on Sophie, chase me! Look, I am levitating! Can't catch me! I think all this rather went to my head What he is NOT telling you is that he nearly gave me a heart attack twice. Once by walking into the sea in a straight line away from the shore and going deaf until I thought he was going to keep going. And the second time when he sprinted across the sands nearly as far as the eye could see and went into his own world obviously on his own speed while I tried in vain to attract his attention. He did come back to me eventually and let me catch him but I was glad I had meat in my pocket and he had a harness on so that my hand could close on it without going near his head. I think quite a bit more work is needed on the long line before he can be said to have a reliable recall. It was safe enough on a huge sandy beach but I had a worrying five minutes.
