I think his NAME should be,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ;D MR WHISKERS Whiskers are an important hunting and orientation tool for dogs as well as many other mammals. A seal's whiskers, for example, pick up vibrations in the water, allowing it to detect prey as far as 180 meters away. The scientific term for these finely tuned sensory structures is "vibrissae." While the hairs themselves don't contain nerve endings, their base is surrounded by erectile tissue and a rich nerve supply. Like human eyelashes, they prompt the dog to close its eyes when they're brushed. The whiskers on cats and dogs are highly sensitive to air currents and vibrations. Dogs react quickly when anything brushes against their whiskers -- see for yourself (with a friendly dog, obviously). Many dog groomers clip their dog's whiskers for show purposes, although it can often impair a dog's ability to hunt and play.

You know Barney-the more I look at Elmer the more he reminds me of a smooth version of Kiya. He has the same expression and very similar colouring even down to his black points, and the same Saluki spectacles. I wonder if he could be a collie cross.
He's lovely and you're doing a wonderful job with him, when he's settled he's going to show his true nature and if he's anything remotely like Kiya he'll be pure gold!

if he's anything remotely like Kiya he'll be pure gold! I'm absolutely certain he will be Kate - at the moment, the basic material just needs a bit of refining! ;D ;D ;D

Another small step..................................
Until this evening Elmer had always obviously been very keen to join t'others when we were about to go out for a walk, but fled when I tried to put his lead on.
Today, though, he stood in line & waited patiently for his turn.
Another tear of joy was shed.

looks like he,s working things out for himself Yup, he's certainly intelligent - it's taken him no time at all to learn one of Annie's favourite games: bring twigs in from the garden, bite them up, & try to make more mess all over the house than you did the previous time. ;D

He just seems to be coming on so quickly with your help The progress that he's made so far is very gratifying, & is mainly down to his own impressive spirit & a willingness to learn.
There's no magic ingredient involved in bringing him on - all he needs is TLC allied to lots of patience, i.e. the same requirements as any other pup, (though admittedly one who exhibits a fair degree of Saluki-type wilfulness! ).
It also helps to have eyes in the back of one's head if chewing a dog bed or the corner of a coffee table is to be discouraged! (Thank goodness for Freecycle! ;D ).
Nope, not this time Paula - I can't afford to add any more to the hounds' insurance budget!
