Elmer's here now, & what a little, (only about 21" to the shoulder), cracker he is!
He's actually in much better nick than the original pics suggest, but he's certainly very nervous: at least he is with me, but not with the other hounds - they've been getting on really well, & my lot's attentions have evoked much tail wagging from the lad.
Winnie of course ensured that he was o.k. on arriving:
All the girls like him:
Muttley, our elderly Staffie bitch houseguest had an initial grump at him, but 'twas only half-hearted, & she's since grown to tolerate, (& even quite appreciate ), his attentions.
Elmer's favourite spot thus far is a corner of the garden by the shed, which is where he appears to feel safe & happily receives his visitors:
Elmer was microchipped at the time I went to pick him up, & he was a brave lad, barely flinching.
In the yard at the rescue where he had been kenneled since arriving from the pound he was surrounded by chickens & a noisy cockerel, but he paid them absolutely no attention, even when they looked as if they were about to steal his treats.
He travelled very well in the houndmobile & was alert & inquisitive throughout the short journey.
I'd guess that Elmer isn't yet housestrained, although his one accident so far could be down to nerves.
He's not yet neutered, & he's booked into the vets for his initial checkup & first vax on Monday morning. He'll be Frontlined & wormed as soon as he comes to accept my presence - I'll let him find his feet in his new surroundings first.
The handsome Elmer will definitely make someone & their existing hound(s) a wonderful canine companion once he gains his confidence, which should soon be achieved with the appropriate administration of lots of TLC.

What a lovely little lad, if he is only a pup he might still have a good bit more growing to do. He is in good hands now, and I am sure he will not be long with Uncle Barney before some one snaps him up.

Some more pics of Elmer growing accustomed to his new surroundings, its occupants, & visitors.
With Muttley, (the old lady seems quite ready to put up with the antics of the new kid on the block ):
Playing with Annie, (the pair of them have become firm friends ):
& again:
Debating whether Mummy Chook is a suitable person with whom to make friends:
Being told by Winnie that he won't come to any harm fraternising with Auntie Jenny:
In conversation with all the Harlow Hooligans:
On his thread Elmer has thus far been described as: 'Poor wee boy' 'Poor lad' 'Poor little thing' 'Poor boy' 'Sad looking little boy' 'Poor little soul' 'Poor little baby' 'Poor scared Elmer' 'Poor little chap' 'Little poppet' 'Little cracker' 'Handsome Elmer' & 'Gorgeous lad'
All of these descriptions probably fit the bill, but what has actually been established in the short time he's been here is that:
He is nervous, but his timidity has already shown great signs of improvement.
He suffers from separation anxiety - when I took my lot out for their evening constitutional I left him in the crate with a bowl of roast chicken & Weetabix & one of fresh water. As we went out he started barking, & was still at it when we returned. He had also upset both bowls on the bed, leading to extra exercise for the washing machine. He was quiet as soon as I put my key in the lock, & his tail wagged nineteen to the dozen when he saw his new chums again. In view of this, he will need to go to a home where he is not, (at least initially), left for any length of time.
He is not housetrained.
He is not lead trained.
These issues will of course be addressed.
We don't yet know if he's child/cat friendly, but chickens do nowt to excite him!
On the plus side he has immediately bonded with the resident hounds, especially Annie, who is his particular pal.
He is playful, as befits a Lurcher not yet a year old.
He is intelligent, & very spirited - I believe that whatever baggage he's brought with him can be fairly rapidly eradicated, given loads of TLC & the appropriate training.
In addition to the above, he is of course a very good looking boy.
So, having said all that, who can help us out by fostering Elmer?
This is assuming some urgency, since waiting in the wings is another young Lurcher lad who may come under our wing due to very tragic family circumstances - we promised him a place some months ago should the sadly predicted events materialise.

I believe the nasty despicable Tag gets taken off our hands in 9 days. (Only joking about the nasty despicable bits) Duly noted in my little black book!
Edited to add:
You don't have to wait 9 days to meet him of course - you know you're welcome here any time.

Elmer at 6.00 a.m. demonstrating his roaching prowess:
Playing with Winnie:
....................& just looking plain cute :
More on the Elmer learning curve:
He absolutely hates being crated, though this morning he ate all his breakfast & didn't throw the contents of his bowl all over the place like yesterday.
I didn't want to leave him alone, so took him out for morning exercise with all t'others, & he was actually reasonably good on the lead, which is just as well, because even with him behaving reasonably well, walking all six together was, um, "fun!" I'll take him out on his own for some one to one lead training later.

We popped into Barney's today for a natter and a cup of tea. Elmer stayed under the bush like in the photo above until we were leaving when he came to make sure we left the premises He came within about an inch of my hand, which I kept still so as not to frighten him off. He reminded us of Alice's GG last September at Grafham Water. I hope Bernice doesn't mind me pinching one of her pics
