Another good night last night - we compromised. He came upstairs with me, woke me at 4.30, went out for a pee, and I thien let him sleep the rest of the night on the sofa. And he was dry even though we both slept through til 9.30 For those who couldn't open the link, here are a few of the pics of Rory enljyong the sunshine in my little garden, and engaging in his his favourite sport - 'catch the bee'. Luckily due to his poor eyesight and even poorer hearing, he's very bad at it and hasn't managed to bag one yet Contemplating a piece of chewy hide - to chew or not to chew? - nah, too hard really Too hot to bother with anything ... I'll just shut my eyes and pant Lurking behind the bellflowers.... I spy a bee ... Well I thought I did! Maybe I'll find one over here! - as you can see the baldy patch on his lower back is getting much better now - there's quite a bit of hair on it POUNCE! - imagine lots of tail wagging in this one.... Think I'll go and lie down again... to hot for huntin'

Yep and two nights out of the last three he's been dry all night WITHOUT having to go out at all - the other night he went out once. Only one lot of serious morning washing in the last fortnight, and other than that only a couple of dribbles a couple of nights... and nothing at all in the last week So I really do feel we've turned a corner No doubt his kidney problems will surface again in time, for now we feel he's got a new lease of life! He's hardly stiff at all either - can jump on and off the bed with no trouble hahaha - and he sometimes takes off from over by the door, about five feet from the bed And he does normal poos now too! All good

I'm not sure if you can see but he's put on a bit of weight now - it's no longer a struggle getting him to eat. His coat's in pretty good nick too - we went out this morning to Polstead and two people remarked on his coat!
My old collie cross was always famous for her coat too - and her teeth, and she never, ever smelled - she never ate any dog food all her life, unless she was staying with someone on her hols. She was raised and lived entirely acc to the regime of Juliette de Bairacli Levy (you can google her) - but it's too late to start Rory on a raw meat diet (and anyway you need a freezer for that). So what I'm doing now is a compromise on the ideal- but it's doing the job, that's what matters

Sorry it's been a month since I last posted. Rory will be very happy when the Olympics are over! Life may get back to normal... I have been taking pics but never get around to uploading them! We've not been having such long walks while all the sports drama has been unfolding, but here's an album of one we did early last month - I'll put in two links in the hope you can cut and paste, and one or the other will work: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150991530924103.413553.697039102&type=1&l=c349c18e58www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150991530924103.413553.697039102&type=1In general, things continue to go well. Rory is mostly dry, and we have only the occasional small accident at night. He sleeps on one of the four small brown towels I bought for 50p each, over the lovely fleeces provided by Sioux and SLR (pics later!) and if there's a small patch in the morning it's only a small one, and I rinse the towel. And it's not very often He usually sleeps downstairs unless I insist on upstairs, but I almost always wake up to a little chirrup and his head around the bedroom door, telling me he wants to go out. Good Boy!! Sometimes I come down and he's still deeply asleep on the sofa... Either way, he's extremely bouncy when he gets up He eats his rice and beef or - even better - rice and chicken, and loves peas and carrot and even bits of chopped tomato or broccoli; he also gets lots of parsley in the mix. He's still fussy about his food but he's eating enough and is no longer really skinny. Little and often is the trick... He likes peach and nectarine too! The Flexijoint treats with mussell extract from Pets At Home, and his daily YuMove tablets, seem to have done the trick for his stiffness - he's very bouncy and can now roll almost all the way over on his back to get his tummy tickled (accompanied by an evil grin). The other day he spotted something run up the wall of the church tower and stood on his back legs several times trying to catch whatever it was (I couldn't see anything!) - then another day last week he jumped up behind my neighbour on his back legs. He'd never done this before, so I was very pleased! He jumps off my bed and dashes down my very steep long staircase in the mornings with no sign of stiffness or pain, so I can only imagine the new flexi-stuff is doing him good. He is sometimes reluctant to climb the stairs last thing at night when he's been deeply asleep, but I'm not sure this is anything but curmudgeonliness... He really does prefer to sleep on the sofa His breath is still pretty foul, but most dog's do have bad breath... - now he loves me so I might try cleaning his teeth a bit. I know it will be a fight though, so it might not be worth it! He had a bath about three weeks ago after a few small 'night accidents' and was very good indeed - didn't struggle in the bath at all. I think he felt more comfy for it and his coat's pretty good now, soft and shiny, though he does moult a lot when the sun comes out! He doesn't mind being brushed though The bald patch on his back is very very slowly filling with hair and I live in hope it will all cover over one day! So all in all we chug on happily, and he seems good for a couple of years yet

I love the Rory updates too, always makes me laugh you can just picture him doing all those daft things like trying to hunt bees! Thank DoG he never catches one. Mia did get one last week but it didn't sting her, I have no idea why not. She didn't like the buzzing in her mouth though, he he! You are making Rory's life so worth living it makes my screen go all blurry.

I'm sure he had a lovely life with Sue too; but maybe as a more experienced dog owner I've better been able to get to the root of a few of his problems. I've had or had charge of a lot of dogs in the past, and my family are all very 'doggy' and this does help when trying to find a way through when things are bothering a dog. Sue and her husband had never had a dog before and Rory isn't always the easiest dog to care for, both due his age-related health problems and because he can be very willful We had quite a few epic battles before he accepted that I was pack leader lol I'm also not a slavish follower of vets' advice and I'm quite a skilled herbalist, so I'm willing to think outside the box... He gets some of the Hold It herbal mix referenced above in his food daily, and now goes all night without having to go out, almost every night. Phew! Anyway, he's getting very vocal asking for his walk, so I'd better jump too it. I don't want to miss the 'closing ceremony'!

Well I spoke too soon - he yelped while jumping around before we went out for our walk earlier, and I thought nothing of it. Our walk was perfectly normal, he ran around a lot, though perhaps not so fast as he can. Then he tried to jump on the sofa after supper and gave a horrid yelp, and hardly got off the ground, and went to lie in his basket instead looking sorry for himself. Then he lay on the rug... He hasn't dared try to jump up onto the sofa since, I had to lift him. He's been asleep all evening; I hope it resolves itself - pulled muscle or something - and he hasn't done something horrid to his back MONDAY: Further to that - he does seem OK today though he's a bit subdued. I lifted him onto the sofa last night, but he must hav egot off ok this morning as he came upstairs to get me this morning at 8am, and came down again fine though not as fast as usual... I didn't risk letting him jump on or off the bed for morning tea (I lifted him - and he stayed in bed for an hour or more after I got up). He's jumped onto the sofa a couple of times but a little gingerly, and is spending more time on the rug than usual (it's quite thick and soft). And he's not nagging me for walks. So think he's feeling something, but it's not serious whatever it is, and he should get over it. He's been extra-fussy about his food too so clearly something's not quite right. I'll monitor it anyway...

Update Tuesday - Rory had a good walk last night (7.30ish), ate all his dinner for a change, and this morning came up to get me at 8.30.
After a long pee, we went back upstairs and he jumped on the bed - which is quite high off the floor, much higher than normal sofa height - with no problems. And he seems back to his usual perky self this morning, asking at the door for his morning walk round the churchyard. Phew!
