We have a Vet hospital in Epping which Anil has used before and which has a good set-up with an Orthopaedic surgeon. Anil referred me there today and I collected the X-Rays from Anil to take with me. I took her in at 2 p.m. and the Chief Surgeon, Glen, said that he was confident that he could plate the ulna and the radius would set behind it. She will have limited stretch in her foot for a good few weeks, but it is the best option. He won't know for definite until he opens her up tomorrow. He said he will keep the costs to a minimum and having the x-rays will cut it down, also plating instead of fixating. Fixating necessitates a lot of visits to the surgery for tightening and sedation for check-ups. Plating will be slower, around 10 weeks (hey ho another long termer!) but unless the screws seem to work loose, there should be no problems. He said he hadn't had a screw loose (excuse the pun!) to date. Approximate cost £1200 - £1500. So little Honey has stayed in today. 12 hour obs on her through the night and tomorrow and the op tomorrow afternoon. They will keep her in for another 24 hour obs and she can come out Thursday. Fingers crossed that when he uncovers the leg and opens it up it hasn't shifted. Poor mite has now had this break a week. We are going to try and get a couple early nights rest, before she comes back to us.

Fingers crossed that when he looks at the leg properly that it can be plated and that Honey can become pain free as soon as possible. Hope you manage to get some sleep Jenny, it sounds like she is in good hands.

Thinking of the poor little girl, she sounds so gentle she doesn't deserve this pain. Hope the specialist can do wonders for her and that you can recharge on your sleep.

I've just rung in. The Hospital has 24 hour care and she had a comfortable night. Her op is scheduled for this afternoon around 2.30 p.m. It's going to be a long day A bit of an emotional day in this household today.

Maybe when she's through the worst and OK with the vets to be moved I could foster her? ie end of the month maybe? - I have prior commitments 27th / 29th. She's smaller than usual and house trained and I lead a very quiet life and I'm home all the time now so I could keep her quiet and give her lots of tlc.
She's under the knife right now - do hope it's going well...

Sorry Sara but she is going to be here at least another 8 weeks. It's early days as she is so shut down and we have to give her some time and space to show her real character. Glen has phoned tonight to say that they operated successfully and she has had a plate inserted. The break has started to knit so they have had to open the break and re-site it. Then plate it and have casted her to hold it in position. She is staying in again tonight and heavily under morphine. We can bring her home tomorrow. It has been a very fraught day here, but so relieved. The Bill so far..... £1345.00.

Just the keeping them for 5 months that hurts.
