Rory - 5 year old Lurcher Lad - stunning « Thread Started on Jul 3, 2010, 5:19pm »
Very sadly, Rory's owner has to go into hospital and it is not definite how long he will be receiving treatment. With a heavy heart he gave Rory into the Rescue today. We know how much Rory was loved in the two months that he had him. He had rescued him himself from dire straits and loved him very much.
It was only after seeing how the Rescue operates that he agreed that it was the best way to go for Rory.
Rory is a lovely doglet. Romi picked him up today and will have him overnight tonight..... but where he goes tomorrow..... will be decided when we know.
Obviously we have Barney on standby up here, but it would be lovely to keep this boy down Hampshire way if we can.
Here are some piccies of Rory, and I will let Romi fill you in..

Well Rory is laying at my feet as I type this. He is a lovely friendly lad who loves a cuddle. He is great with other dogs out on walks, including Angus who like Rory is an entire male, but in the house he growls at Angus and strangely enough Tyler (female, 11 years old) but gets on fine with Nero. He did try to attack Angus at one point in the garden today, but no harm done and he stopped when I yelled at him. Angus just looked surprized and offended. They all walked happily side by side for over an hour on the leads so I think with more bonding walks (and his bits cut off) there would be no problems. He is not nervous in any way at all and just takes everything in his stride - cars, lorries bicycles, skateboards, ceiling fans. I don't know about food aggression as I fed him in the dining room with the door shut. He left a bit in his bowl which he let me pick up ok so I don't think he's too worried about it. He follows me about everywhere at the moment and I think he will make someone a very loyal companion. He is definitely not bird-friendly as he killed a fledgeling blackbird in the garden today - with his muzzle on. Del is awake now and I'm not dead yet, but I think it would be best if he is moved to another foster home tomorrow. (Rory, not Del - well.....maybe!) I intend to go on the Lurcher SOS walk at Ockham tomorrow morning at 11am, so if anyone could meet me there and do the next leg of the journey up to Barney that would be great. Assuming that is that nobody round this area can take him in. I have to work on monday morning and wouldn't like to leave Rory and Angus alone in the house together just in case. Rory is wearing a muzzle at the moment to be on the safe side but he is always trying to get it off. If he hurt Angus then Del would never let me get away with this kind of thing again. I will try and get a few more pictures soon now that he is not charging around exploring the place.

Its about the same distance both ways round London from Junction 10. Its really up to whoever does the next bit. You could try asking Laurie's LSOS people if they could help out. I am not on their forum but perhaps someone who is could cross post this.

Rory spent a perfect night with us. He slept on a dog cushion next to my bed and never made a peep all night. I woke at 5.41am (yuk) to find him missing. Crawling out onto the landing I looked out the window to see him playing ball in the garden with Del! He has been clean in the house the whole time, but likes to pee up absolutely everything in the garden. (Rory, not Del ) He should benefit hugely from having his boy-bits chopped off and will hopefully then fit into almost any pack. He likes to play around in the garden with Nero but is still quite growly with Angus who thankfully just shrugs it off and turns his back on him. He growls at Tyler a little too, but she just avoids him. I think he would probably be fine as an only dog too as he seems more focused on me than the other dogs and spends most of the time at my feet - where he is now. He craves human company and I haven't tried leaving him alone so I don't know about SA.
Sorry Romi, only just got in from the Colourthon walk at Southend. If you can get him on the first leg round the M.25, which way would it be?
We've offered to take him from Ockham (which is bang on J10) Jenny and we'll get him closer to you. J10 is literally opposite you so we can head for a stretch in either direction

Rory had a lovely walk at Ockham (Thank you Stu ) and has gone on his way with Donna and Mark. Thanks guys. He was very well behaved and would have loved to have gone off-lead for a play but his recall is not good enough for that yet. Have a great life little lad and we hope you find your forever sofa soon.

After Romi left us it was arranged for Steve and Sandie to take Rory up the M25 (They were going that way anyway) and to meet up with Jenny at St. Albans, so a) we can't take the credit b) He should be with Jenny now and c) big thanx to Steve and Sandie for shipping the boy north-wards.
I should have some more piccys that I'll post later, but this lads a really nice fella, although he does need to be 'relieved' of a couple of weights He does remind me of Helens Tarka

Rory has landed! Jenny & Michael dropped him here getting on for about an hour ago, & all is going well thus far.
The lad is smaller than I expected, (in fact he's just a tad smaller than all my girls), & apart from being so skinny, he looks in pretty good nick, has obviously been well cared for, (at least in the recent past), & is a credit to his previous owner.
Rory has had a good explore of the home-kennel, & thoroughly marked all over the garden. He's had some cooked sausage, some Markies, & a few mouthfuls of Burns Chicken & Maize, & is now laid at my feet in the office.
All is thus far peace & light with the girls, who all appear to have fully accepted him as another pack member, albeit one who redresses the household gender balance a bit!
Everything positive that's been said about Rory is absolutely correct - this boy is to die for! (I must get out of this "if only........" mode! ).
I'll take them all out for a meander round the little local park in an hour or so when it's a bit cooler, & will report back.
Heartfelt thanks to all the SLR members who pulled out the stops to get the adorable Rory into the rescue's care.

By the time we all went for our evening perambulation it was cloudy, with a very pleasant breeze, but even so we just plodded along, (there really wasn’t any other option, given that Rory wanted to give all the new sniffing places a fair crack of the whip ).
The lad was as good as gold on lead, but frequently attempted to part company with his muzzle, which he’s patently not keen on – I’ll leave it off when I take him for a walk to PAH in the morning to stock up on tripe & Markies. Bet he’ll be a real hit with the store staff.
On our return from the walk in the park I put a duvet down for Rory in the office, but he preferred to lie on the cooler laminate flooring, with Winnie helping herself to the duvet & t’other two girls lying in the hall just outside the office. ‘Twas so peaceful that you wouldn’t have had an inkling that there were four hounds in such close proximity – long may it last!

The little man had a good night, sleeping right through next to me on the settee.
Rory has marked once in the house – I caught him at it, gave him a stern ‘no!’ & put him out in the garden, where he immediately had a wee. There have been no other accidents. I do, however, think that Rory & Winnie are competing in their own World Marking Championship – wish I had a quid for every time they mark!
On the pre-breakfast walk Rory was very good on the lead, with no pulling, & he really loved being in the woods. Initial signs are that he is indeed a bit of a predator, as he deffo had designs on a woodpigeon & a couple of squirrels, not to mention a neighbourhood cat in the far distance.
All the hounds breakfasted on plain Butchers tripe, Burns chicken & maize, plain boiled rice, & some pieces of chicken roll. Rory’s appetite was voracious, & he was first to finish by a country mile. He then put his head in Winnie’s bowl whilst she was eating, & she showed no inclination to chase him off – I think she would have walked away & let him have what was left of her breakfast, but I took him out of the kitchen to allow the girls polish off their meal in peace, & when they were finished I let him in again, whereupon he devoured the few mouthfuls t’others had left. Initial signs are very much that it won’t take forever to put some weight on him!
After giving him time to digest his meal, I walked Rory to PAH on his own, & once again his lead manners were impeccable. In the store the staff’s reaction was as expected, i.e. Aaaaaaawww etc.
We encountered a very large black hairy Heinz 57 in one of the aisles, & there was initially much tail wagging & sniffing on both sides, before the big ‘un made some sort of intimidatory movement, whereupon Rory stood his ground & made a sound in his throat that I not so much heard as felt through the lead. T’other dog immediately backed off, looking totally confused.
On our arrival back at the home-kennel the girls seemed pleased to see him, & he them. No issues have thus far arisen between the dogs.
Having sorted the hounds’ diet regime for the next few days I needed to nip to the convenience store at The Stow to organise summat for myself to eat tonight, & based on the information I had from Romi & Jenny I decided to chance twenty minutes of the dogs being on their own without crating Rory. I needn’t have been concerned, as there were no signs of SA: I listened outside the house for a few minutes before setting off - all was quiet, & on my return there was no sign of any destruction, or of issues arising between the hounds.
I have no reason to doubt my initial impression that this lovely lad will make some lucky person a loyal & devoted companion.

On our visit to PAH this morning we discovered that there were none of the home-kennel favourite medium size Markies in the pick’n’mix bins, just large ones & puppy size, so Rory kindly offered to sample all t’other available treats to sus out which were suitable to replenish the treat jar stock. His favourites turned out to be ‘salmon burger’ & ‘liver square’ biscuits, so we duly took some of each back with us, & the girls fully approved his choice.
Rory has had four walks today, & behaved impeccably on lead each time, giving no cause for concern over anyone or anything that we encountered. He’s been very good in the house too, & is still getting on fine with the girls. He took the last of the tablets that had been prescribed by his previous vet in a knob of Flora with no problem.
To aid his weight gain Rory will have some pasta for his breakfast tomorrow - probably with Chappie, since he exhibited a bit of a stinky bum last night, & again throughout today.
Rory has stuck to me like Velcro all day, just as he did with Romi, & whoever adopts the lad will certainly not receive short rations of affection & Lurcher leans!
Barney x

Rory is booked in at the vets on Thursday morning for Anil to give him a checkup. If all goes well & Anil considers that he's o.k. for the snip, the op will be carried out the same day. If not, Anil will send him home with some A.B's.
The pasta went down very well, (& very quickly! ), together with the Chappie at breakfast time, & touch wood there's been no sign of a stinky bum today!
I judged it safe to leave Rory alone with the girls, unmuzzled & uncrated, for about an hour this morning whilst I toddled off to Tesco to lay in three or four days shopping, & the lad fully justified my faith in him - happily it appears that SA isn't a major problem for the lad, although he did of course have my hounds for company.
Once again today, Rory was good on the lead, & in the house, where there have been no accidents & no sign of any destructive tendencies.
Sadly, I have to confess that the boy actually does appear to have a fault! It would seem that he's totally useless as a guard dog, as when a couple of members of the God Squad knocked this morning, he rushed to the front door, but there wasn't a peep out of him! Mind you, the three girls were with him, & there wasn't the slightest sound out of any of them either!
Rory continues to be very affectionate, & is a joy to have around.
